Hurricane Lane

Dangerous Hurricane Lane approaches the main Hawaiian Islands.  The Central Pacific Hurricane Center (CPHC) in Honolulu Hawaii predicts a slow northward motion to begin this afternoon and continue through Friday. A turn toward the west is expected Saturday and Sunday, with an increase in forward speed.

The latest forecast track from the Central Pacific Hurricane Center brings the center of Lane dangerously close to the main Hawaiian Islands Thursday afternoon through Saturday.

Regardless of the exact track, life threatening impacts are likely over many areas as this strong hurricane makes its closest approach. Do not focus on the exact forecast track or intensity of Lane. Be prepared for changes in future forecasts. Although the official forecast does not explicitly indicate Lane's center making landfall over any of the islands, this could still occur.

The ship is currently out at sea, away from the storm. Pride of America is expected to return to Honolulu on Sunday, August 26th. The previously scheduled August 25th sailing will be delayed until Monday, August 27th. Hurricane Ignacio Impacts Pride of America

Hurricane Ignacio is the latest tropical cyclone in this busy 2015 eastern Pacific hurricane season to pose potential danger for the Hawaiian Islands. The Central Pacific Hurricane Center (CPHC) in Honolulu Hawaii predicts that Ignacio will still be a hurricane when it passes to the northeast of Hawaii in the next several days.

SHIP IMPACT:	Due to Hurricane Ignacio in the Pacific, Pride of America's itinerary for the cruise departing on August 29 has been adjusted to call on Nawiliwili on Sunday where the ship will overnight, followed by Hilo on Wednesday, Kahului on Thursday where the ship will overnight and returning to Honolulu on Saturday. Approaching Hawaii

Not one, but two Hurricanes are heading for the Hawaiian Islands.

Iselle still heading for the Big Island, maintaining hurricane intensity.  On the forecast track, the center of Iselle is expected to pass very near or over the Big Island Thursday night, and pass just south of the smaller islands Friday.

Maximum sustained winds are near 90 mph, 150 km/h, with higher gusts. Some weakening is forecast during the next 48 hours, but Iselle is now expected to be a hurricane as it passes near or over the Big Island.

Update: Iselle was classified as a tropical storm 11 p.m. Thursday Hawaii Standard Time when its winds slowed to 70 mph, putting it below the minimum of 74 mph for a hurricane. The storm is weakening because of several factors, including wind shear chopping at the system and the Big Island's terrain above the water, said Chris Brenchley, meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Honolulu.

Early this morning, Julio strengthened to a Category 2 Hurricane.While there are no coastal watches and warnings currently in effect for this storm, interests in the Hawaiian Islands should monitor the progress of Julio.

Update: Hurricane Julio, a Category 3 storm, is about 1,000 miles behind Iselle in the Pacific.
Maximum sustained winds are near 120 mph, 195 km/h, with higher gusts. Julio is a category three hurricane on the saffir-simpson hurricane wind scale. Gradual weakening is expected through Saturday.

Tropical Storm Flossie off Hawaiian Islands

The Central Pacific Hurricane Center in Honolulu, Hawaii is issuing advisories on tropical depression Flossie, located in the vicinity of the island of Kauai. The system is moving toward the west northwest at about 18 mph.

The remnants of former tropical depression Flossie is located about 225 miles northwest of Lihue, Kauai. The system is moving toward the west northwest at about 18 mph. There is a near zero percent chance of redevelopment.

Cruise Ship Impact

Norwegian Cruise Line's Pride of America was impacted by Flossie. The line decided to leave Maui a day early, in the abundance of caution, to head out to sea avoiding the approaching storm.The ship returned to its regular schedule today when it docked in Hilo.  No further impacts are expected as the storm weakened.

Norwegian Cruise Line has announced that its U.S.-flagged cruise ship, Pride of America, which sails the Hawaiian Islands, will undergo a $30M refurbishment in Spring 2013.

The ship will enter a 14 day dry-dock in Honolulu, HI, March 23, 2013, at which time it will receive major renovations including the addition of 24 ultra-luxurious suites, four Studio staterooms and four inside staterooms; Moderno Churrascaria, the line's signature Brazilian-style steakhouse; ship wide wireless internet connectivity; new carpeting throughout; flat screen televisions in all staterooms; updated décor; upgrades to the fitness center; new directional signage; renovations to the gift shop, photo gallery and art gallery; and much more.

Much of the focus the past week or so has been on the Tropical Storms in the Atlantic. That doesn't mean that the Pacific is exempt from tropical storms and hurricanes this time of year. We have been watching that area closely also, but fortunately, the storms that developed became disorganized before threatening any land or cruise ship interests.

Once the NHC begins to monitor a storm, we'll add RSS feeds to this blog so that you can monitor the storm between posts. When developments become significant, we'll write a detailed article to help you plan your cruise vacation in the area.
