Vicente and Willa Impact Bliss

Archive | Graphics
Tropical Storm Vicente

We set sail from Port of Los Angeles (Long Beach) at 4 PM on schedule. While at dinner, about an hour and a half later, the captain came on the speaker to welcome us on board Norwegian Bliss and to update us on our itinerary for the week. Due to two tropical storms in the Pacific, one which will grow into a Major Hurricane in the next days, the Miami office altered our itinerary. Instead of sailing to the Mexican Riviera, we would make two stops in California (San Francisco & San Diego) and one in Mexico (Ensenada). Safety of the passengers, crew, and ship take precedence at all times, especially during Hurricane Season.

As you can see from the 5 day graphics below, Tropical Storm Vicente will set its eyes on Southern Mexico, while Willa will intensify into a Major Hurricane and head north to our original ports of call.

Tropical Storm Willa

Tropical Storm Willa has rapidly intensified since genesis occurred last night, and it is almost a hurricane. The storm has taken advantage of near ideal environmental conditions and the current forecast shows Willa becoming a major hurricane in a day or so. These conditions are expected to prevail for another couple of days, and that should allow Willa to continue to strengthen rapidly.

Hawaii Bracing for Two Hurricanes

CPHC issuing advisories on ISELLE
Hurricane Iselle
 Hurricane Julio
Approaching Hawaii

Not one, but two Hurricanes are heading for the Hawaiian Islands.
Iselle still heading for the Big Island, maintaining hurricane intensity.  On the forecast track, the center of Iselle is expected to pass very near or over the Big Island Thursday night, and pass just south of the smaller islands Friday.
Maximum sustained winds are near 90 mph, 150 km/h, with higher gusts. Some weakening is forecast during the next 48 hours, but Iselle is now expected to be a hurricane as it passes near or over the Big Island.

Update: Iselle was classified as a tropical storm 11 p.m. Thursday Hawaii Standard Time when its winds slowed to 70 mph, putting it below the minimum of 74 mph for a hurricane. The storm is weakening because of several factors, including wind shear chopping at the system and the Big Island's terrain above the water, said Chris Brenchley, meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Honolulu.

NHC issuing advisories on Hurricane JULIO

HURRICANE JULIO

Early this morning, Julio strengthened to a Category 2 Hurricane. While there are no coastal watches and warnings currently in effect for this storm, interests in the Hawaiian Islands should monitor the progress of Julio.

Update: Hurricane Julio, a Category 3 storm, is about 1,000 miles behind Iselle in the Pacific.
Maximum sustained winds are near 120 mph, 195 km/h, with higher gusts. Julio is a category three hurricane on the saffir-simpson hurricane wind scale. Gradual weakening is expected through Saturday.

SURF...LARGE SWELLS GENERATED BY HURRICANE JULIO ARE EXPECTED TO
PRODUCE BUILDING SURF ALONG MOST NORTH AND EAST FACING SHORES OF THE
MAIN HAWAIIAN ISLANDS STARTING TONIGHT...AND CONTINUING INTO EARLY
NEXT WEEK.

Tropical Storm Karen in Atlantic

TS Karen
Tropical Storm Karen

Tropical Storm Karen formed in the Eastern Gulf of Mexico prompting tropical storm and hurricane warnings for the northern Gulf Coast.  Due to the anticipated arrival of the storm, Port of New Orleans had closed the Mississippi River.

This storm impacted two Carnival Cruise Line sailings:

Port of New Orleans authorities opted to open the Mississippi River earlier than anticipated while keeping a watch on Tropical Storm Karen, allowing both Carnival Elation and Carnival Conquest to return to port sooner than expected. Elation now will return to New Orleans around 2 p.m. Sunday. Conquest is expected to return at 1:30 p.m. Passengers onboard both ships may disembark Sunday or spend one more night onboard and disembark Monday morning.

Passengers scheduled for the next cruise onboard Elation may board between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. Monday; passengers scheduled to sail on Conquest may board between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. Monday.

"Our top priority was to keep a safe distance from the storm while we waited for the river to re-open," Carnival Cruise Lines President and CEO Gerry Cahill said in a news release. "We are pleased to be able to get our ships back into New Orleans earlier than what was originally anticipated as the storm was moving towards the coastline. We apologize to our guests for the inconvenience caused by Tropical Storm Karen and we extend our appreciation to all of the officials and maritime partners in New Orleans who have worked with us throughout to manage the situation as smoothly as possible."
