Odyssey Delivered to Royal Caribbean Virtually

Odyssey Delivery via Zoom

Royal Caribbean Group is known for their Tradition, Innovation, and Revolution. Today all three of those traits were observed when they virtually took delivery of their newest Quantum class ship, Odyssey of the Seas from German shipbuilder Meyer Werft in a ceremony that was held virtually on Zoom with dignitaries in various locations, live from Odyssey bridge and deck, along with performances live from Quantum of the Seas. As far as I'm aware this is a first for the cruise industry.

After introductions of the VIPs from Royal Caribbean and Meyer Werft, the traditional lowering of the flag of the country of the shipbuilder (German flag) and the raising of the country the ship sails under (Bahamas flag) was done.

Raise Bahamas, Royal, & US Flags

Then the Royal Caribbean and U.S. flags were raised while the anthem was sung by Whitney Drake from the Royal Theater onboard Quantum of the Seas. It was a very stirring rendition of the anthem.

Next was the traditional blessing of the ship done by Father Sanford Sears of Seafarers' House in Fort Lauderdale. The ceremony concluded with a live performance from Two70 on Quantum of the Seas.

The broadcast concluded with a Q&A session with President & CEO, Michael Bayley responding to a few questions.

More than 10,000 people worked together to turn dreams of this new ship into reality. Odyssey is the 25th ship in the Royal Caribbean fleet. She will begin sailing to Greece from Israel and when the U.S. ports reopen she will homeport from Fort Lauderdale, FL. sailing to the Caribbean.

Watch this video to see the entire ceremony. Congratulations to Royal Caribbean and Meyer Werft for this great accomplishment during a pandemic.

Protect Your Flight Credits

Airline Tickets Expiring

Expiring Credits

It's been a year since flights were cancelled and credits issued due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Most airlines had provided credits that could be used one year after the original ticketing date. At the time, that seemed so far away, but low and behold, there are many passengers in possession of expiring tickets. Do you have tickets that are expiring?

Tip: If you have airline credits from 2020, be sure to check your accounts and determine when your credits expire.  Depending on the airline, you could forfeit your original ticket purchase price if you don't stay on top of this.

Throughout the pandemic, the travel industry has repeatedly reviewed policies and made adjustments to them. Policies covering cancellations, change fees,  and rebooking were modified frequently.     For the most part, the industry made changes that benefited their customers, however, there were often timeframes that needed to be met to take advantage of the modified policies. Staying on top of all these changes became a full time job for travel professionals who were there to guide their guests through the process.

Extending Expiration Dates

Some airlines, like United and American, have modified their original expiration dates to March 31, 2022 while others expire the end of this year or sooner. Southwest Airlines is the most restrictive in that they have no intention to extend the dates.   Following are some of the major airlines current policies regarding flight credits.   Please consult your carrier directly for the latest information, as this may change at any time.

United Airlines (Using Travel Credits

Future flight credit (unused ticket)

Future flight credit can be used to book travel on United, United Express, and partner-operated flights. For most tickets, future flight credit must be used for travel within 12 months of the date your original ticket was issued. Future flight credit for tickets issued between May 1, 2019 – March 31, 2021, is only valid for travel commencing on or before March 31, 2022.

American Airlines (Travel Flexibility Updates

Change fees are waived for tickets bought on or before September 30, 2020, for travel March 1, 2020 – March 31, 2021. This offer includes Basic Economy fares and AAdvantage® award tickets.

Keep in mind: You may owe any difference in ticket price when you rebook your trip. You’re allowed to change your origin and destination cities as part of this offer. All travel for your new trip must be completed by March 31, 2022. Plus, if you have a ticket that is expiring between March 1, 2020 and March 31, 2021, the value of your unused ticket can be used for travel through March 31, 2022.*

*Change fees apply if your original ticketed travel was before March 1, 2020, Basic Economy tickets with travel before March 1, 2020 are non-changeable.

Southwest Airlines (Refunds for Tickets

Popular Wanna Get Away fares are reusable but not refundable, and can only be used by the original ticketed Passenger. You can reuse Travel Funds associated with your Wanna Get Away fare for future travel as long as you: Cancel your reservation in accordance with our No Show Policy (i.e., at least 10 minutes prior to departure).

Complete your travel within one year of the original date you purchased your ticket.

NOTE:   Southwest does NOT extend the expiration date. There is an unpublished workaround that costs you $100 per ticket to get a six month extension AFTER the credit expires. This is not a new policy - you can find out more on their community forum from passengers that found themselves facing the loss of their flight credits.

Delta Airlines (Travel Update Center)

How Do I Use My eCredit to Rebook Later?

All qualifying eCredits (those from tickets purchased before April 17, 2020, for travel March 1, 2020, through March 31, 2021) will be automatically extended to December 2022 so there’s no action needed on your part. If your eCredit for canceled travel has not yet been processed or extended, or is temporarily displaying incorrectly, there is no need to call. Rest assured your flight value is secure and will be ready to redeem online when you need it.

Alaska Airlines (Credit Certificates)
When you cancel or change a nonrefundable Alaska Airlines ticket, you can choose to receive any remaining ticket value as a credit certificate for future travel.

Certificates are valid for 12 months from the issue date of your original ticket, or 30 days from the date of exchange or cancellation, whichever is greater.

Credit certificates must be applied to the purchase of a new ticket before the expiration date, but travel can take place after the expiration date.

Credit certificate extensions

As a part of our COVID-19 relief measures, credit certificates issued after March 1, 2020 with an original expiration date of July 5, 2021 or earlier were extended through December 31, 2021.

Check your certificate balance to verify your expiration date.

Consult Your Airline

As already mentioned, policies are very fluid during these times, so while this information was extracted from the representative airlines at the time of writing this post, their policies could change depending on the current situation.  This list is also not intended to be exhaustive, so your airline might not be listed.   Bottom line, if you are frequent fliers, check your online accounts for your credits and expiration dates.   You can also contact your travel professional who booked your flights or the airline directly if you booked yourself.

Hoping to see you in the friendly skies again soon.

Carnival Not Moving Ships from US

Carnival update
Watch Video (click here)

Following CLIA's request to the CDC to allow cruising from U.S. ports to resume by July and the response from the CDC that it is sticking to the end date in the Conditional Sail Order of expiration of November 1, 2021, cruise lines have been making their own announcements regarding their plans.

Some cruise lines, such as Royal Caribbean and Celebrity Cruises have announced cruises starting in June from new homeports outside the U.S.  See posts in our mini-series:  Let's Get Traveling.

Carnival Cruise Line Update
  • Not Moving Ships away from U.S. ports
  • No decision on vaccine requirements
  • No decision on June sailings
  • Extension of final payment to April 30 for June departures
  • June sailings can be cancelled up to April 30 with no penalty
Carnival Cruise Line president Christine Duffy said:
“Here at Carnival Cruise Line, we currently do not have any plans to move our ships away from their U.S. homeports. I’ve always said, Carnival Cruise Line is America’s Cruise Line. We sail from 14 U.S. homeports, 50% of our itineraries are less than 7-day sailings and a significant number of our guests drive to their Carnival cruise vacation.”

She also said that Carnival remains very encouraged by the vaccine rollout and that they are an important tool along with several health protocols. Carnival carries more families than other carriers.  Since no vaccine is available for children, making vaccinations mandatory would limit who would be able to sail at the moment.

We will continue to monitor updates for all cruise lines.  We suggest you bookmark our mini-series and check frequently for updates.   You can also follow us on our various social media platforms.

Urge Congress to Resume Cruising

CLIA - Ask Congress to Resume Cruising

CLIA URGING CONGRESS TO RESUME SAILING
YOUR VOICE MATTERS

Use your voice to tell Congress to urge the Biden Administration to lift the Conditional Sailing Order (CSO) and allow cruising to resume in the U.S. by the beginning of July 2021! Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA) has posted a form on their website asking that member agents and others contact their Congressmen to allow cruising to resume from U.S. ports in time for Summer. Here is information from the website which is the basis for this ask:
"Much has changed since the CDC issued the Framework for Conditional Sailing Order (CSO) last fall, including the cruise industry's proven success resuming operations in other parts of the world, where nearly 400,000 passengers have sailed since last summer. With the vaccine rollout gaining momentum and President Biden's projection that the U.S. will be “closer to normal” by early July, the case for the resumption of cruising in the U.S. has never been stronger.
The CSO, which was issued in October 2020, does not reflect these important developments. More than a year has passed since U.S. cruise operations were suspended and preparing a cruise ship to sail again will take some time—approximately 90 days, to be exact—which means that cruise lines must start planning NOW if they are going to resume operations by July."

CDC responded to CLIA's request by indicating that the CSO end date remains the same at this time.

Your voice is IMPORTANT and NEEDED!

If you are ready to see cruising treated like other sectors of travel and tourism and on track to resume in the U.S. by July 2021, please take a moment to call, email, and/or Tweet your Senators and U.S. Representatives to let them know!   CLIA has made it easy for with this online form.
