Cable Car in Rüdesheim

Seilbahn  Rüdesheim

A highlight of any visit to Rüdesheim is the ride in a cable car up to the Germania (Niederwald) Monument. The awe-inspiring panoramic views over Rüdesheim's oldtown and the shimmering waters of the Rhine dotted with green isles make the smooth glide over the vineyards a very special experience.

Experience what the ride is like in this short video segment:

The entire visit took about an hour - 15 minutes each way by cable car and 30 minutes on top to go to the monument and take photos of the surrounding area.   The cost was not included in our excursion, it was 7,00 euro round-trip per person.

Niederwald Monument

The monument was constructed to commemorate the foundation of the German Empire (Unification of Germany) after the end of the Franco-Prussian War. It overlooks the valley of the Rhine and was built in the 1870/80s.

The central figure is the 10.5 metres (34 ft) tall Germania figure. In the sculptured impression, Germania holds the recovered crown of the emperor in the right hand and in the left the Imperial Sword.

Helidelberg Walking Tour

 Heidelberg's Altstadt
Market Square (Marktplatz)

The next stop on our city tour was Marktplatz, the market place square in the heart of Heidelberg's Altstadt (Old Town). We had free time to explore at our leisure.

Beautiful attractions of Market Square include  the overall area, the Town Hall, the Church of the Holy Spirit, the Ritter facade (Hauptstraße 178) and the facade of the Old Pharmacy (Hauptstraße 190). You can sit and enjoy a coffee by the Hercules fountain or browse through the various shops.

Lindt Chocolate

We were fortunate to have clear blue skies as a background for our images of Old Town.   One couldn't have asked for a better day.

After doing some shopping and photography in Market Square, we had enough time to walk along the Neckar River to the Old Bridge. From there it was a short walk along the narrow cobblestone streets back to the Tourist Center, which was where our motor coach would return to pick us up.

#FriFotos Takes to the Roads - Helsinki

#FriFotos Theme: #ROADS

Our next stop on our Baltic Cruise features several cobblestone roads.  This was another destination that could easily be toured on our own via a walking tour.

Third in a Series of Posts

If you are just joining us, we are reflecting on our Celebrity Constellation Baltic Cruise with a series of articles showing the countries we visited featuring their #Roads in order to share tweets on the weekly #FriFotos photo forum.  For those of you not familiar with the forum, it is hosted by . The theme is revealed every Tuesday 12pm ET.    Recently, @spencerspellman joined the team as a permanent co-host.  We  co-hosted one week late last year and continue to contribute with images from our archives whenever possible.

 On the Road - Helsinki

Helsinki is the capital and largest city of Finland. Located on the shores of the Gulf of Finland, an arm of the Baltic Sea, it's closest neighbors are Tallinn, Estonia, Stockholm, Sweden, and St. Petersburg, Russia.

Helsinki is Finland's major political, educational, financial, cultural, and research center as well as one of northern Europe's major cities.

As with many of its neighbors, Helsinki's public transportation still uses trolleys with overhead wires seen in many parts of the city.  In the image above, you'll notice that there are also bike paths along the major #roads as well.

#FriFotos Theme: #ROADS

During our Baltic Cruise onboard Celebrity Constellation, we visited many port cities and toured them on our own.  Many of them involved getting around via Hop-on-Hop-off-Bus.   This is a cost effective method to get around town and tour on your own schedule.   Most of the tours start and end close by to the cruise terminal.

First in a Series of Posts

We are sharing many of our images captured during our travels around the globe.   Some of the #Roads we are sharing are close by while others are "across the pond".   For this series of articles, we'll focus on destinations in the Baltic region.

For those that don't know:  #FriFotos is a weekly photo forum by . Theme is revealed every Tuesday 12pm ET.    Recently, @spencerspellman joined the team as a permanent co-host.  We even had the chance to co-host one week late last year.

 On the Road - Tallinn

Tallinn is the largest city and capital of Estonia.  This northern coastal town was one of the highlights of our Baltic Cruise.  It is located south of Helsinki, east of Stockholm and west of Saint Petersburg, all of which were also included in our list of ports.

The first image above was taken through the front window of the tour bus we were one.  This is the modern section of Tallinn.  The picture above is a poor section of town that is pretty run down.

Toompea (Cathedral Hill) is in the central part of the city.  It is part of the Tallinn Old Town UNESCO World Heritage Site.

 City of Contrasts

When you focus on #Roads and their surroundings, you can't help but be struck by the contrasts of old and new architecture.  The limestone road leading up to Toompea contrasts with this modern road on the left with buses, cars, and electric cars which are part of the transportation system in use.

Plan on spending a leisurely day exploring this capital city.  We'd suggest starting your visit with the Old Town and ultimately returning  to your ship after visiting the modern parts of the city.

Diary of Celebrity Xpeditions Galapagos

A Land Beyond Xpectations

Over one hundred fifty years ago, a man wrote about his quest that took him to a place where he would discover how life evolved thousands of years ago.  Travel with us as we follow in his footsteps and discover a land that is inhabited by species that can be found nowhere else on earth.
Come with us on our Celebrity Xpeditions adventure that begins in Quito, Ecauador where we had the opportunity to visit local sites including the Equatorial Line Monument.   Here you can stand on a line between the two hemispheres.
Our ultimate destination is an archipelago of volcanic islands near the equator in the Pacific Ocean.  We are met by a team of naturalists who transport us by Zodiacs to our waiting ship, Celebrity Xpedition.

Celebrity Xpedition recently had their license suspended as we had reported (Lobsters Keep Cruise Ship from Entering National Park) and have now resumed sailing (Celebrity Xpedition to Resume Galapagos Sailings).  We are assembling past articles, posting images, and adding new material in this diary so that you can easily follow our complete adventure.   If you have any unanswered questions, we'd be happy to answer them and also help plan your own unforgettable adventure.

Celebrity Xpedition - Day 2 - Quito Old Town

Saturday, August 30th we began our day in Quito with a breakfast buffet in the Executive Lounge on the 9th floor of the JW Marriott Hotel. There were a selection of fresh fruits and juices which were so different than the ones back home. The pineapple really stuck out in my mind - it was a lighter color and very sweet. There also were a selection of hot foods and pastries.

Celebrity Xpeditions pre-cruise stay includes complimentary use of the lounge. Besides breakfast, snacks and Hors D'oeuvres are served there later in the day. Coffee, tea, soft drinks, and bottled water are also complimentary. One glass of wine or local beer is also included.

After breakfast we met the Xpeditions staff in the hotel lobby and boarded one of the four luxury buses that were chartered for our group. Celebrity Xpeditions staff really pays attention to details to make the cruisetour special. The bus seats were covered with the Xpeditions logo (pictured above).

Our first stop was at the Basilica of the National Vow, (Spanish: Basílica del Voto Nacional) a Roman Catholic church located in Quito, Ecuador. The basilica stands on a steep hill to the northeast of the old town and can be seen from almost everywhere in the city. We only had enough time for a photo stop both exterior and interior. It is unfortunate that we didn't climb up the bell tower because it offers several vantage points of the city. The stained-glass windows in the church are outstanding, equaling those that we've seen in Europe for example.

After a short bus ride, we arrived at Plaza de Independencia, in the heart of the Quito old town, which is walled by the four pillars of society, the Cathedral , Presidential Palace (Carondelet Palace) , the Archbishop’s Palace and the Municipal Palace.

We entered the Presidential Palace from its north side, passing the guards. Two ‘toy-soldier’ guards, decked out in antiquated gold and blue uniforms, the Grenadiers of Tarqui, flank the main entrance. After getting pictures taken with the palace guards, we toured the exterior of the palace.

We toured several of the other historic buildings in the old town area including the monastery, before boarding our coach for the drive to El Crater Restaurant for lunch.

As we headed away from Old Town we got a glimpse of El Panecillo (the Virgin Monument) which towers over the city of Quito. View our Quito Old Town album for many more pictures.
