Diary of Celebrity Xpeditions Galapagos

A Land Beyond Xpectations

Over one hundred fifty years ago, a man wrote about his quest that took him to a place where he would discover how life evolved thousands of years ago.  Travel with us as we follow in his footsteps and discover a land that is inhabited by species that can be found nowhere else on earth.
Come with us on our Celebrity Xpeditions adventure that begins in Quito, Ecauador where we had the opportunity to visit local sites including the Equatorial Line Monument.   Here you can stand on a line between the two hemispheres.
Our ultimate destination is an archipelago of volcanic islands near the equator in the Pacific Ocean.  We are met by a team of naturalists who transport us by Zodiacs to our waiting ship, Celebrity Xpedition.

Celebrity Xpedition recently had their license suspended as we had reported (Lobsters Keep Cruise Ship from Entering National Park) and have now resumed sailing (Celebrity Xpedition to Resume Galapagos Sailings).  We are assembling past articles, posting images, and adding new material in this diary so that you can easily follow our complete adventure.   If you have any unanswered questions, we'd be happy to answer them and also help plan your own unforgettable adventure.

Crossing the Line

I've talked about Isabela & Fernandina, the highlights of Day 7, but neglected to mention one special event that happened the night before. As Celebrity Xpedition made its way from Bartolome Island to Urbina Bay (Isabela), the ship crossed into the Northern Hemisphere.

As usual, we had our evening briefing in Discovery Lounge. The Cruise Director explained the ship's course for the evening and the next day. He also invited us to a special event being held after dinner back in Discovery Lounge.

As is tradition onboard Celebrity Xpedition, on the evening that the ship crosses the Equator, a special party is held in commemoration of this event. It is the "Crossing the Line" party which is held at 10 PM.

Everyone gathered in Discovery Lounge for the party just before 10 PM. Similar to the countdown on New Year's eve, we anxiously awaited the actual crossing of the Equator into the Northern Hemisphere. We were told a special guest would appear at the moment we crossed.

Sure enough, King Neptune and his court appeared just as we crossed the line. He made his way through the crowd and selected a Queen. Who do you think King Neptune selected to be his Queen? Well, if you haven't guessed "me", let me break the news to you - it was me.  Watch this video:

A robe was placed on my shoulders, a crown was put on my head, and I was seated in front of the rest of the passengers while my subjects were selected. King Neptune wanted to please me, so the selected subjects had to entertain me until I was satisfied.

The Celebrity Xpedition staff really made this evening special. Later in the cruise, we would receive our certificate of crossing signed by the Captain of the vessel. I can now add this to my list of treasured memories of our cruises.

Celebrity Xpedition - Day 2 - Equatorial Line Monument

Following lunch at El Crater we boarded our motor coaches for a short ride to the Middle of the World (la Mitad del Mundo) Monument. This famous monument marks the equatorial line: the centre of our planet earth: 0˚-0'-0" Latitude. It is possible to straddle both hemispheres at the same time.

This 30-meter-tall monument, located 10 kilometres north of the city of Quito, Ecuador, marks one of the points where the equator goes through the country. Inside the monument is a museum about the indigenous ethnography of Ecuador. The first thing we did when we got inside the musuem was to take the elevator to the observation deck which offers spectacular views of the surrounding area.

After touring the museum we did some shopping at the boutiques located on the grounds of the monument. A special Equator passport stamp is available at the museum. The stamp is also available at the Celebrity Xpedition hospitality desk at the JW Marriott Hotel.

This stop concluded our Quito tour. We boarded the motor coaches and returned to the hotel where we had some free time before our group dinner.
