Patriot Day 2012

President Proclaims Patriot Day, Day of Remembrance

Patriot Day - 9/11By a joint resolution approved December 18, 2001 (Public Law 107-89), the Congress has designated September 11 of each year as “Patriot Day,” and by Public Law 111-13, approved April 21, 2009, the Congress has requested the observance of September 11 as an annually recognized “National Day of Service and Remembrance”. President Obama officially proclaimed September 11, 2012, as Patriot Day.

Patriot DayIn his remarks, the President said “On September 11, 2001, a bright autumn day was darkened by the worst attack on the American people in our history. Thousands of innocent men, women, and children perished when mighty towers collapsed in the heart of New York City and wreckage burned in Pennsylvania and at the Pentagon. They were family and friends, service members and first responders — and the tragedy of their loss left pain that will never fade and scars our country will never forget.”

He continued, “More than a decade later, the world we live in is forever changed. But as we mark the anniversary of September 11, we remember what remains the same: our character as a Nation, our faith in one another, and our legacy as a country strengthened by service and selflessness. ”

He called us to service, by saying “Today, as we remember the victims, their families, and the heroes who stood up during one of our country’s darkest moments, I invite all Americans to reclaim that abiding spirit of compassion by serving their communities in the days and weeks ahead. From volunteering with a faith-based organization, to collecting food and clothing for those in need, to preparing care packages for our men and women in uniform, there are many ways to bring service into our everyday lives — and each of us can do something.”

Remembering 9/11/2001

Each year we recall where we were when learning about the terrorist attacks.   We were on the inaugural voyage of Norwegian Sun, thousands of miles from home in Paris, France.   Our tour bus was filled with our fellow passengers, the majority of whom lived in New York.  The transatlantic cruise, we were on, was originally scheduled to conclude in New York but ended in Boston instead.

What was to have been a celebration of our 25th Anniversary, quickly became a very unique experience as we observed the hospitality and caring from so many people across the globe as our journey home continued.

See our article from last year, FDNY May We Never Forget, on the 10th anniversary, as we recalled our journey back to New York to visit the site of the World Trade Center attacks.  Should your cruise vacation plans include New York, we recommend spending some time at the WTC Memorial and other historic sites in the city.

Thanks for Visiting Us at Chamberfest

Streamwood Chamber of Commerce
ChamberFest 2012

It was a beautiful day here in Streamwood, IL for our annual ChamberFest event.  The temperature was in the 70's with a gentle breeze ... OK, sometimes it was quite windy.   There were puffy white clouds in the sky, making it a gorgeous early fall day.

My day started early as we had the chairs for all the vendors in our mini-van. We setup the event  with assistance from my Executive Assistant, some other Chamber Board members, friends, and their family members.    Our theme for this year's event was "Bringing Business and Community Together".  The event lived up to that theme.

Besides having several local businesses in our expo, we were conducting our monthly car show with prizes to be awarded based on votes from all the visitors throughout the event.

The police and fire department had vehicles there for the children to explore - complete with junior fire helmets for the kids.   A bouncy house, complete with slide seemed to be the big hit for the children.

On behalf of the Streamwood Chamber of Commerce, I'd like to thank our sponsors, The Chicago Loop Sports Bar & Grill, Dr. Christopher L. Schneider, D.M.D, and the Schaumburg Staples Copy & Print for helping make this a successful event.

I can't thank the SCC Chamber staff and Board Members enough for helping me with the planning and running of this year's ChamberFest.  Of course I'd also like to thank my husband for helping with the event and with my booth as I did "double duty" with my booth and helping to run the event as Chamber President.

We'd like to welcome new readers to our Blog, Facebook fan page, and website, who stopped by to talk with us at the ChamberFest.   I look forward to talking to you more in the future to help plan a great cruise or land vacation for you and your traveling companions. We've included links here with a brief explanation of some of the resources we offer to our followers.   Please be sure to take advantage of all these opportunities, as that is the best way to stay informed.

Norwegian Breakaway Hull Artwork

Norwegian Breakaway - Peter Max Design

Norwegian Breakaway
Design by Peter Max

Norwegian Breakaway’s signature hull artwork designed by pop icon and America’s most popular living artist, Peter Max!

Norwegian Cruise Line has just unveiled the hull artwork for their latest ship, Norwegian Breakaway. The line has previously indicated that the ship's homeport will be New York, so the artwork is very fitting.

The Statue of Liberty's crown and New York skyline are the central figures in the design.  The rest of the design includes a sunburst, musical notes, planets and stars.  Max’s signature artwork will cover approximately 40,000 square feet of Norwegian Breakaway’s hull!

Norwegian president and CEO Kevin Sheehan said "The Big Apple is known for its love of art and its many galleries -- and now, Norwegian Breakaway becomes a floating piece of that art that will cruise in and dock every Saturday on New York's West Side."

Peter Max commented, "While it has been an honor to have my art exhibited in museums and galleries, I have also enjoyed creating giant 'canvases' for public view, including my 600 ft. Woodstock stage, a giant World's Fair mural, the body of a Continental 777 super jet, and now, the hull of Norwegian Breakaway," said Peter Max from his New York studio. "The artwork is a composite of New York City and cosmic imagery? the Statue of Liberty, the Manhattan skyline, a giant sunburst, planets, stars, and musical notes. That's my New York! And now Norwegian Breakaway is my New York cruise ship 'canvas.'"

Thoughts on Labor Day - 1000th Post

Today We Celebrate
Labor Day...

which celebrates the economic and social contributions of workers. Labor Day is an American Federal Holiday which occurs on the first Monday of September each year.

While the proposal for the holiday dates back to 1882, it wasn't until years later, under President Glover Cleveland, that the holiday was recognized and adopted by the Congress.

Labor ...

a : expenditure of physical or mental effort especially when difficult or compulsory
b (1) : human activity that provides the goods or services in an economy (2) : the services performed by workers for wages as distinguished from those rendered by entrepreneurs for profits

Source: Merriam-Webster Dictionaries

Today, by virtue of the federal holiday, those who Labor are entitled to rest.  The ironic thing is that Labor Day has become a huge retail day, so many who Labor, are in fact working on this "day off".

Our 1000th Blog Post

It is fitting that this post is our 1000th article since we began this blog in 2007.   We started slow, with just a few posts a month for the first several months. We  have been steadily increasing the frequency of posts since then, to an average of one post every other day.   There are times when we will have several posts on the same day, or in a span of several days - such as during Hurricane Season.

For us, this is a "Labor of Love" so perhaps it is fitting that we hit this milestone on Labor Day 2012.

We got the idea for this blog back in 2007 while attending our National Conference on Norwegian Pearl, which sailed from Miami to Cozumel and Grand Cayman.   Talking with several of our fellow agent friends, we learned about the blogs that they were writing, and decided that we too would like to share our experiences with the world.

"State of the Blog"

Our Blog Description best describes what we try to accomplish in our writings ...  "Virtually travel around the world as you "Cruise with Chris" on her cruise journeys. Learn tips that will help you on YOUR next cruise vacation. Share YOUR experiences with readers. Escape, if only briefly, from reality as you put YOURSELF in these exotic destinations."

We go beyond destinations, bringing you important information to help you plan for adverse travel conditions, such as hurricanes, volcanoes, snow, rain, and other natural and man-made events.   We bring you updates on changes in the Cruise Industry as well as individual Cruise Lines.

There is something for everyone in the Blog Archives.   We suggest that you don't simply read the current article, but that you use the Blog Search feature to see if we've previously written about a topic that is of interest to you.

Going forward, we will expand our coverage to include land-based vacations as well as cruises.  We love cruises and recognize their value, so our personal trips will usually include a cruise for at least part of the duration.  After getting a taste of a destination, we realize that many of you want to go back to the same destination and spend more time really getting to immerse  yourself in the culture and the destination.   Since we are able to assist with that as well, it makes sense that we expand our coverage in the upcoming months.

Please Participate

If you look at our Blog Description again, you'll notice that we have encouraged our readers to share their experiences as well.   We get some comments, but very few (when you consider how long this column has been running).

Perhaps a better way to share experiences is on our Facebook Page.   Between the two publishing vehicles, we hope to make it easy for our followers to participate in the future.   We often struggle to come up with new ideas for our posts.   We try to "guess" what our readers might want to learn about.  We always welcome your questions and comments about things you'd like to see in our Blog and Facebook page.

Be sure to become a fan (Like us) on Facebook.   Did you know that we have exclusive content on our Welcome page for our loyal fans?   This can be inside information on something changing in the cruise industry to special offers which we share with you before telling the general public about the offer.

Thank you to all our Loyal Followers
