Dynamic Ship Hull Art

Norwegian Cruise Line

Extraordinary Artwork

Most cruise ships relegate their artwork to the inside. Norwegian Cruise Line takes art one-step further by featuring dynamic images on the hull of their vessels.

 Norwegian Dawn

The artwork, depicting Norwegian Dawn's itinerary, runs on both sides of the hull with the starboard side featuring dolphins playing in Technicolor waves reflecting the ship's Caribbean itinerary from the port of Miami. The port side featured New York City's leading lady, the Statue of Liberty, signifying the ship's Bahamas and Florida itinerary from the port of New York.

Norwegian Pearl’s
decorative hull artwork is splashed along both sides of the hull featuring dramatic strands of colorful pearls and streamers running from the bow of the ship almost to the middle of the ship.

Pearls naturally come in a wide variety of colors, ranging from creams and roses to greens and golds. The hues on Norwegian Pearl’s hull  showcase a colorful palate including green, plum, cranberry and sapphire blue.

Norwegian Breakaway

Norwegian Breakaway’s signature hull artwork designed by pop icon and America’s most popular living artist, Peter Max, covers approximately 40,000 square feet of the hull.

This was the first time Norwegian Cruise Line  commissioned a well-known artist to paint the hull artwork on one of their ships.

Norwegian Epic

Norwegian Epic’s hull artwork, designed by the company’s internal marketing team, was painted on both sides with free form rolling waves of varying sizes that run through a modern color spectrum of lime, aqua, red, and purple and are dotted by silver circles.

The hull design was a departure from the rest of the line’s signature hull artwork which typically is inspired by the ship’s name or the destination the ship sails from. Instead, the hull artwork on Norwegian Epic took on the characteristics of the ship’s interior features including controversial New Wave staterooms.

#FriFotos #ART Theme

We've brought you this selection of Norwegian Cruise Line's ships in honor of the popular Twitter photography forum's theme of #ART this Friday.   We can only imagine the thrill for the fortunate artists that were handed a blank canvas of this size on which to share their vision for the brand new cruise ship.   Also see Hull Art Norwegian Escape for the latest entry in the series of hull artwork.

O'Sheehan's Pub Perfect for Big Game

Where Will You Watch The Big Game Next Sunday?

Home?  Bar?
Friend's House?
Cruise Ship?

Norwegian Cruise Line introduced O'Sheehan's Bar & Grill on Norwegian Epic, about three years ago, and also included it on the new Breakaway-class ships as well.

Coming Soon to Entire Fleet

This central point gathering spot has become so successful that the line will be expanding the option fleet-wide.

Speaking at a news conference onboard the line's newest ship, Norwegian Getaway, in Southampton, U.K., Kevin Sheehan said:

"O'Sheehan's has proved to be such a center point of the ship, for people to gather and socialize, that we have decided to put it on all the ships."

Big Game Meet Big Screen

With it's two story big screen TV, it is the perfect spot on the ship to gather for the Big Game or any other broadcast entertainment throughout the cruise. No doubt it will be filled to over flowing this coming Sunday as the Broncos and Seahawks meet on the football turf to do battle.

Food and drink will be flowing as fans cheer on their favorite team.  After the game there's plenty of entertainment so no need to head off to another venue if you don't want to.  Of course, since this is centrally located on the ship, you can easily get around.

Comfort Food & Beverages

Select from a menu of comfort food options along with your favorite beverage for the perfect meal any time during your cruise.   Shown here was our selection of Fish 'n Chips and Chicken Pot Pie which were both very good.  The menu might change from time to time, so be sure to find your own favorites and let us know what you ate.

Entertainment

We've included images from both Norwegian Epic and Norwegian Breakaway here.   Common to both are billiards and bowling as well as various video arcade games.   There are tables spread around along with additional TV screens so that you can enjoy some entertainment and not miss the action of your favorite sports team.

The addition of O'Sheehan's Bar & Grill on the entire fleet will be a fantastic improvement.  In addition, the line plans to relocate Moderno Churrascaria, the popular Brazilian Steakhouse, adjacent to Cagney's, the lines popular steakhouse.

Two additional Breakaway Class ships – Norwegian Escape and Norwegian Bliss will be delivered in 2015 and 2017.  They will be similar to the already sailing ships, with some unique features. We will share details once they are unveiled in the months ahead, along with their home ports and itineraries.  Learn more about these new ships on our micro-site:

What Does The Fish Say

You Won't Hear These Fish But They Have
Something to Say

If you've ever been confused about which way forward and aft are on your Norwegian Cruise Line ship, these fish can tell you which way to go. The fish are swimming towards the forward (bow) of the ship. So when you step outside your cabin or turn down the corridor, just check the direction of the fish relative to the location on the ship that you want to go.

Finding Your Way Onboard

As ships get larger and more complex, it can be confusing to get from one location to another.   The cruise lines have employed various technologies to make finding your way a breeze.   The best improvement is the "way finder" which was introduced on Royal Caribbean Oasis and Allure of the Seas.  This touch screen allows you to map your route, find your current location, find out what's currently happening and much more.  They are located throughout the ship nearby elevators.

Digital signage is a big advancement which is being adopted on other ships and cruise lines.   Read this article to find out about the largest ship afloat: Navigating the Allure of the Seas

This is one of the features included in the Royal Advantage upgrades fleetwide.

What to Do

While navigation is an important capability with the digital signs, equally important is helping you plan your day. On Disney Dream for example, you can find hours of operation and movie selection for Buena Vista Theatre, you can learn about It's a Small World Nursery and their hours of operation, and find out when and where your favorite Disney characters will be making an appearance.

When & Where to Eat

The first to pioneer relaxed dining times was Norwegian Cruise line with their Freestyle Dining program.   At first you'd have to call to find out if there was availability, but they were among the first to implement digital touch screens to assist you in planning your meals.

These are just a few of the ways you can use to navigate the cruise ships of today.  We'll complete the story in another article.

Visit to the 9/11 Memorial and Tribute Site

We Will Never Forget

A trip to New York isn't complete without a stop at the 9/11 Memorial and Tribute Site at the World Trade Center.  The new buildings are still under construction, but they have certainly made lots of progress since our last visit.

Here is an image of the South Tower fountain.  A flag has been placed by a Girl Scout troop.   You'll also see roses placed by workers on the birthdays of the victim.

We uploaded several pictures to our Facebook Fan Page while we were at the memorial.   We've also created the start of our National Conference updates on our Shutterfly page.

We will be sailing from Manhattan Cruise Terminal today to Bermuda on Norwegian Breakaway.   See you later once we get onboard the ship.

Pre-Conference Stay in New York

Welcome to New York
LaGuardia Airport

Greetings from New York City.   We followed our own advice and have arrived one day before our National Conference Cruise from New York's Manhattan Terminal to Bermuda on Norwegian Breakaway.

We landed at LGA around 2 PM and retrieved our checked  bag from baggage claim and called our hotel, Marriott's SpringHill Suites, requesting a shuttle pickup.

Upon going outside, we were amazed to see the passenger pickup lane filled with cars parked waiting for their passengers.   Coming from Chicago's O'Hare International Airport,  this scene was shocking since it would not be allowed.   After about 20 minutes, our shuttle van arrived and we were off to check in.

Next stop - Metro bus and train to site of the World Trade Center and the 9/11 Memorial.
We'll share more information about this visit in another post.  See our Facebook Page for more pictures.

Norwegian Breakaway Class News

Norwegian Breakaway took another major step towards her highly-anticipated delivery early this morning when she departed Meyer Werft on her conveyance along the Ems River. Leaving Meyer Werft at approximately 6 a.m. Germany time, sailing backwards, Norwegian Breakaway successfully cleared the first set of locks, and then continued along the river to her final destination in Eemshaven, The Netherlands.

Norwegian Breakaway is the largest cruise ship to ever be constructed in Germany; therefore, it required very precise maneuvers in order to pass through the narrow passage of the initial locks. The ship, measuring 1063 feet long and 130 feet wide; only had 1.6 meters clearance on the starboard side when it passed through the locks. A team of two were in control of the maneuvers, one in control of the bow and one in control of the stern, to ensure that the passage took place at minimum speed and only placed minimum pressure on the bumpers that lined the inside of the locks.

It is an interesting sight to see a ship traveling backwards, but the reason for this is due to the strong propulsion in the aft section of the vessel. Therefore, traveling backwards, or stern first, helps with maneuverability which is a key component when navigating the vessel through such narrow passages.

Norwegian Breakaway: Hey Look Me Over

Norwegian Breakaway
Float-Out
Meyer Werft Shipyard

Sporting Peter Max's New York City Skyline design, Norwegian Breakaway emerged from MEYER WERFT's covered building dock II today as scheduled.

This milestone in the construction of the 145,000 gross ton cruise ship, signals the start of final construction and testing of the ship's systems.   The Papenburg, Germany shipyard has already been busy the past few weeks conducting extensive tests and machinery trials.  Following the float-out and more tests to be carried out in the harbour, the ship will be berthed alongside the yard's outfitting pier.

Watch this video to see today's float-out courtesy of MEYER WERFT.

Delays in the time schedule due to weather conditions may occur. With the ship being berthed at the yard's pier, the remaining work and tests and trials will be carried out in the next few days. Within merely a couple of days, the first crew members will move into their cabins on board, and familiarize themselves with the ship itself and its numerous systems.

The Norwegian Breakaway's conveyance down the river Ems towards the North Sea, where she will prove her seaworthiness, is scheduled for early March 2013.

Fireworks Illuminates Norwegian Breakaway

Norwegian Breakaway
To Light Up the Sky

When Norwegian Breakaway debuts this May in New York City, it will feature  an exciting fireworks show on every cruise during her summer inaugural season.

The environmentally-friendly pyrotechnics display will dazzle guests on the second to last night at sea each week, after the ship departs Bermuda.

To view a short animation of the fireworks show, please click here... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iFOSvMKzI1E&feature=youtu.be

1980s Deck Party

Norwegian Cruise Line is known for their entertainment such as The Second City Comedy and Blue Man Group.  They also are known for deck parties and on the new Breakaway, they'll be taking things to a new level. Building on the electrifying theme of the ship’s headlining Broadway show, ROCK OF AGES, the awe-inspiring fireworks will be the grand finale of a decadent 1980s-themed deck party and will be set to a specially-selected playlist of classic 1980s hits by artists like Madonna, Devo and Prince.

“All the incredible entertainment and amenities on Norwegian Breakaway are going to wow our guests,” said Kevin Sheehan, Norwegian Cruise Line’s CEO. “We wanted one additional element that would really blow them away and this incredible fireworks show is going to take the cruise to a new level of excitement.”

Guests will party the night away under the
stars in the open-air Spice H20 venue at the aft of the ship while enjoying the  fully-produced show featuring a visual masterpiece that is set to a playlist of classic 80s hits including “Come on Feel the Noise,” by Quiet Riot; “Whip It,” by Devo; “Cherish,” by Madonna; “Final Countdown,” by Europe; and “Purple Rain,” by Prince. In a breathtaking finale, a mesmerizing color-filled fireworks show will light up the night sky, right above the ship. New Yorkers are very familiar with fireworks shows set to music, with the annual Fourth of July spectacular hosted by Macy's.   We suspect this show will be as exciting as that annual event.

The 4,000 passenger Norwegian Breakaway will
begin weekly summer seven-day cruises to Bermuda on Sunday, May 12, 2013 after its arrival in her year-round homeport of New York City on May 7th. From October 2013 through April 2014, New York’s ship will offer voyages from the heart of Manhattan to the Bahamas & Florida and the Southern Caribbean.

Not the First Ship to Offer Fireworks

While Norwegian Cruise Line often is the first to introduce new ideas at sea, they unfortunately can't claim the fireworks show.   Disney Cruise Lines offers a similar experience onboard their ships during their "Pirates in the Caribbean" show.  Pirates chase each other around the deck as music blares and culminates as the nighttime sky is lit by colorful exploding bursts of light.  We'll have to wait and see if Norwegian Breakaway's show comes in first or second place in guest rankings.  Be sure to plan your cruise during this inaugural season so that you'll be able to see what promises to be an exciting show.

Godmothers Named for Norwegian Breakaway

Rockettes - courtesy Norwegian Cruise Line
Rocketttes Named Godmother
Norwegian Breakaway

There is a lot of tradition that is followed even today when a new ship is placed into service.  One of the most important milestones is the christening, where the Godmother breaks a bottle of champagne against the hull of the ship.

When Norwegian Breakaway is christened next May,  she will have not one, not two, but several Godmothers.   The world famous Rockettes, iconic dancers of New York, will do the honors.  MSG Entertainment, owner of the Rockettes, announced Norwegian Cruise Line will be the official cruise line of the Rockettes and Radio City Music Hall and an official partner of the Radio City Christmas Spectacular.

"I strongly believe that the Rockettes, one of the most beloved and recognizable New York icons, are the perfect choice to serve as the ship's godmothers," Kevin Sheehan, Norwegian's CEO, said in a prepared statement.

Most ships have one Godmother, but some ships have had more than one.

Rockettes Will be Onboard

The Rockettes role won't end with the breaking of the bottle against the hull. Two dancers from the famed troupe will sail aboard each of the first six sailings of Norwegian Breakaway, and the first sailing of each month thereafter. While onboard, the two Rockettes will lead exclusive Rockette-themed fitness classes and will participate in photo ops, as well as meet and greets with passengers. The Rockettes also will be showcased via a historical retrospective in the ship's library.

Norwegian Cruise Line is known for their entertainment, with acts like Second City, Blue Man Group and others gracing the stages onboard.   The Rockettes is the perfect addition to the lineup for a ship that makes New York its home.

Norwegian Breakaway Hull Artwork

Norwegian Breakaway - Peter Max Design
Norwegian Breakaway artwork courtesy NCL
Norwegian Breakaway
Design by Peter Max

Norwegian Breakaway’s signature hull artwork designed by pop icon and America’s most popular living artist, Peter Max!

Norwegian Cruise Line has just unveiled the hull artwork for their latest ship, Norwegian Breakaway. The line has previously indicated that the ship's homeport will be New York, so the artwork is very fitting.

The Statue of Liberty's crown and New York skyline are the central figures in the design.  The rest of the design includes a sunburst, musical notes, planets and stars.  Max’s signature artwork will cover approximately 40,000 square feet of Norwegian Breakaway’s hull!

Norwegian president and CEO Kevin Sheehan said "The Big Apple is known for its love of art and its many galleries -- and now, Norwegian Breakaway becomes a floating piece of that art that will cruise in and dock every Saturday on New York's West Side."

Peter Max commented, "While it has been an honor to have my art exhibited in museums and galleries, I have also enjoyed creating giant 'canvases' for public view, including my 600 ft. Woodstock stage, a giant World's Fair mural, the body of a Continental 777 super jet, and now, the hull of Norwegian Breakaway," said Peter Max from his New York studio. "The artwork is a composite of New York City and cosmic imagery? the Statue of Liberty, the Manhattan skyline, a giant sunburst, planets, stars, and musical notes. That's my New York! And now Norwegian Breakaway is my New York cruise ship 'canvas.'"

Singing the Blues at Sea

FAT CATS JAZZ & BLUES CLUB
Inside or Oceanside, blues never sounded so good.

Dark wood floors. Exposed brick. Legends of decades past hanging on the walls. From the moment you step inside, you’ll feel you’re in a swingin’ New York City jazz club. Keep an eye–and ear–open for New York blues star, Slam Allen, who will perform live on most nights.

His unique blend of soul and blues is a style all his own. Whether you’re watching a five-piece performance inside or sitting outside on The Waterfront enjoying a drink, the ocean breeze and the cool sounds, this is the place for some of the best live jazz and blues music you’ll hear at sea.

New York’s very own Slam Allen made a name for himself when he headlined the house band in the Jazz & Blues Club on Norwegian Epic, and now he will return to center stage in Fat Cats Jazz & Blues Club on Norwegian Breakaway.  Blowing audiences away with his soulfully intense blues and jazz performances, Slam has been entertaining audiences for over 20 years.

Guests can sit back and relax in one of the comfortable leather chairs or couches of this hipster-inspired space, while whales away – pouring his heart and soul into every single song. And, only on Norwegian Breakaway, can guests also enjoy his smooth sounds while sitting on The Waterfront, with a drink in hand, taking in the warm ocean breeze.

Cirque Dreams Jungle Fantasy

Those who have sailed on Norwegian Epic, and had a chance to attend Cirque Dreams & Dinner can attest to how mesmerizing and powerful this experience is. The circus feats that the acrobats perform are mind-blowing, but when you are reminded that they are performing them on a moving ship – it becomes unbelievable.

This jungle-themed dinner show will feature the Cirque Dreamers performing their breathtaking feats surrounded by a soaring Ballet of Butterflies, Flipping Monkeys, Hopping Frogs, Spine-bending Lizards and Fanciful Birds in an exotic, awe-inspiring adventure.

The show originally debuted in Vegas and was hailed as “the grandest circus spectacle east of Vegas” by New York Magazine. Norwegian Breakaway Keel Laying

Norwegian Breakaway
Officially Under Construction

Papenbug, Germany - Meyer Werft Shipyard

The keel laying of the cruise ship with the yard number S.678 was celebrated at the MEYER WERFT shipyard on Friday, May 4. The first of 73 blocks of the 144,000 GT vessel was lifted into the covered building dock II.

In the dock, Kevin Sheehan, Norwegian Cruise Line’s CEO, laid the traditional "lucky coin", before the block was put down by the 800-ton crane.

The ship's first block that weighs more than 350 tons marks the start of the ship's construction in the yard's building dock.

Norwegian Breakaway is scheduled for delivery in spring 2013. It is the first of two new ships to be built for Norwegian Cruise Line.  The ship will accommodate 4000 passengers and more than 1500 crew members.

The shipyard also cut the first piece of steel for the construction of sister ship Norwegian Getaway, which is set for delivery in spring 2014.

Traditional Keel Laying Ceremony

The maritime industry is one that is filled with traditions that live on today.   One of those traditions is the laying of the keel ceremony, which is marked by a celebration that includes the placement of a ceremonial coin under the new ship's keel for good luck.   In modern times,  laying down of the keel is when the first block, or section of the ship, is lowered into the building dock.  This marks the initial step in construction of a ship, so by shipbuilding tradition, the construction is dated from this event.
