Self-Playing Musical Instrument Collection

Siegfried’s Mechanical Music Museum in Rüdesheim

We sailed from Mainz, Germany at 5:00 AM arriving in Rüdesheim around 8:00 AM.  Following breakfast, we boarded the mini City Train for the short ride to Siegfried’s Mechanical Music Museum.  Our Cruise Director told us this would be one of our favorite excursions, and he was correct.

Self-Playing Instruments

The "Siegfried Mechanisches Musikkabinett" is the first museum collection in Germany dedicated to self-playing musical instruments. From delicate musical boxes to a gigantic piano-orchestration, there are approximately 350 automatic instruments exhibiting one of the largest and finest collections from the 18th to the 20th century. The museum also includes tools and machines for manufacturing barrel organs, cardboard music, piano rolls and musical box plates.

A few of the highlights on the 45 minute guided include:
  • A snuff box with a musical songbird which was produced in the first half of the 19th Century by J. Bruguier in Geneva. When the mechanism is activated, it opens the oval lid and a tiny bird appears, moving its beak and flapping its wings.
  • Bernhard Dufner’s band of 27 automatic dolls, each one playing a different instrument. This is the largest Doll Automaton calliope that was ever built.
  • The Hupfeld phono Liszt Violina are amazing mechanical violins. Because these instruments musically and technically surpassed all expectations they have been described as the eighth wonder of the world.

Rock out to the scorching hits of the 80s including “Don’t Stop Believin,” We Built This City,” “The Final Countdown,” “Here We Go Again” and much more.

Set on infamous Sunset Strip in 1987, Rock of Ages tells the story of a boy from south Detroit and a small-town girl, both in Los Angeles chasing their dreams of making it big and falling in love.

The 4,000 passenger Norwegian Breakaway will arrive in her year-round homeport of New York City in early May 2013. The ship will begin weekly summer seven-day cruises to Bermuda on Sunday, May 12, 2013.  Liberty of the Seas

Saturday Night Fever
Live on Royal Caribbean

Acclaimed West End-show "Saturday Night Fever: The Musical" has made its debut aboard Royal Caribbean International's Liberty of the Seas, the first Broadway show featured on a Royal Caribbean cruise in Europe.

"Saturday Night Fever: The Musical" premiered in the West End at the London Palladium in 1998 and has been seen by more than 10 million people worldwide. On Liberty of the Seas, the story of Tony, the ambitious Brooklyn teen who spends his Saturday nights disco dancing is played by the British actor Lucas Rush and is brought to life on stage in the ship's state-of-the-art, 1,320-seat Platinum Theatre. The show has been created by Royal Caribbean Productions in association with Robert Stigwood Organisation Ltd. as part of the ship's recent Royal Advantage revitalization and onboard enhancements.

"We are delighted to offer a West End hit aboard Liberty of the Seas, just in time for the ship's maiden season in Europe this summer," said Lisa Bauer, senior vice president, Hotel Operations, Royal Caribbean International. "Exceeding the expectations of our guests is part of the Royal Advantage that we deliver at Royal Caribbean International, and the new 'Saturday Night Fever: The Musical' show is set to be a real hit onboard. We can't wait to see our guests singing the catchy tunes while they are rock climbing, surfing, ice skating and enjoying all the other activities that Liberty of the Seas offers. With all this, and now a true West End show included in the cruise fare, there are more reasons for guests to vacation at sea."

Based on the hugely popular 1970's feature film, "Saturday Night Fever," the storyline and music that created the worldwide disco phenomenon includes cult-classic songs from The Bee Gees including "Stayin' Alive," "Tragedy," and "More than a woman," and KC and the Sunshine Band's "Boogie Shoes."

In addition to "Saturday Night Fever," Liberty of the Seas has received some of the most popular features that debuted aboard Oasis of the Seas and Allure of the Seas as part of the multi-ship Royal AdvantageSM revitalization and enhancement program. The Royal AdvantageSM delivers a most memorable vacation onboard some of the world's most innovative cruise ships that sail to exciting destinations and feature the widest array of exclusive and cutting-edge onboard amenities.  Read more:  Introducing Royal Advantage

Oasis of the Seas - Entertainment

Royal Caribbean International is known for their fantastic production shows, and when Oasis of the Seas begins sailing in December 2009, that tradition will continue. The Tony award-winning Broadway-licensed musical, 'Hairspray,' is set to debut in the ship's grand Opal Theater.

According to Peter Compton, RCI's Vice President Entertainment, "The show is licensed to Royal Caribbean International for three years aboard Oasis of the Seas with an option for a fourth year. Under the agreement, which was struck with the aid of New York City-based Music Theater International and Broadway Theatrical, the show will be available exclusively to the cruise line, ensuring the 'feel good' performance will be the only of its kind at sea."

'Hairspray' had a seven year run on Broadway, which ended this past January, and is still dazzling audiences at London's West End. The show is set in the 1960s and tells the story of Tracy Turnblad, a big girl with big aspirations who wins a spot on a local TV dance program and finds herself transformed into a teen sensation.

Rehersals are underway onboard the Oasis as she sails across the Atlantic. In the following two videos, you can get a glipmse of the rehersals as well as learn more about the musical entertainment onboard.
