Hurricane Preparedness - Storm Surge

National Hurrican Prep

Updated: June 2024

Storm Surge Hazard

We continue our coverage of the 2024 Hurricane Preparedness Week by looking at some of the hurricane hazards.  In particular, we'll start by examining the greatest potential for loss of life related to a hurricane, the storm surge.

Simply put, it is a dome of water that is pushed toward the shore by the force of the winds swirling around the storm.  The advancing water, combined with the normal tides, can increase the mean water level by 15 feet or more.  The threat is increased if it combines with high tide.  Along the Atlantic and Gulf coasts of the United States, the mean sea level is around 10 feet, so a storm surge above that level could cause catastrophic damage.

The Many Factors that Influence Storm Surge
  • Central Pressure
  • Storm Intensity
  • Storm Forward Speed
  • Size
  • Angle of Approach to Coast
  • Shape of the Coastline
  • Width and Slope of Ocean Bottom
  • Local Features
Download INTRODUCTION TO STORM SURGE (PDF) or consult Storm Surge Overview for more background information about storm surge.  Several predictive products exist to help forecast storm surges impact for your area.

For those in danger areas, it is wise to plan in advance of hurricane season.   Be sure you know areas that would be safe when a storm approaches.   You should be able to get to these safe zones quickly so that you don't risk being trapped by road congestion.

Hurricanes usually provide advance warning.  When local officials recommend evacuation, heed their warnings and put your plan into action.   Structures can be replaced, but lives cannot.

We'll continue our Hurricane Preparedness Week coverage by looking at additional hazards next.   Consult the NHC and other websites for additional information about storm surges.

4 Things To Help Plan Vacation in Hurricane Season

Cruising during Hurricane Season

Atlantic Hurricane Season Begins June 1st

Pacific Hurricane Season Begins May 15th

Does that Mean we Should Not Cruise ?

Of course not !!   You won't find a ship in the middle of a hurricane - so you should be safe.

Updated: June 2024

What You Need To Know Before You Book

So You Want To Cruise or Vacation at a Resort During Hurricane Season ...

What to Expect
Pros & Cons
How to Prepare
Protecting Your Investment
The kids are out of school, you've saved up enough time to take a vacation, but you find out that the only time you have available is right in the middle of Hurricane Season.   Do you throw in the towel and forget your plans?   Or, is there hope after all that you can have a vacation?

What to Expect

That's an easy one to answer.   First of all, Expect the unexpected!!  You might think that sounds a bit ominous.  Well, not really.   If you have a plan in mind for unexpected situations, you can easily adapt to whatever comes your way.  We'll talk about how to prepare a bit later.

Hurricane season runs approximately from June 1 - November 30th.   This year, the first storm came in January way ahead of schedule, helping to make our point about expecting the unexpected.

Secondly, Expect that your plans might have to change!!  There is only so much that you have control over in your life.  You certainly have no control over the weather, and the impact it may have on your plans.

Finally, Expect that Safety will take Precedence over your vacation itinerary!!  Regardless of whether you are staying at a vacation resort or about to get on a cruise ship, you can be certain that a tropical storm heading your way can potentially alter your original plans.

Pros & Cons

Let's assume that you have decided to go ahead with a vacation in a tropical region that has the potential for tropical storms and hurricanes.   Knowing differences between the two major categories of vacations can help you select the right vacation for you.

We are making the assumption that you have planned your vacation in advance.  This means that you aren't selecting your destination with prior knowledge of the current weather forecast.   Tropical storms often form quickly with little or no warning and can often change course.

Some of the major differences:

VACATION
PRO
CON
Land - Resort
  • Can select destination based on past history of tropical storm activity impacting the region.
  • Selecting a location inland may lessen impact of a storm approaching the coast
  • Everyone at the resort has the same experience in a storm (don't have to contend with rough waves for example)
  • If the resort is part of a family of properties, they may be able to offer alternative plans if a storm is approaching
  • Safety is of utmost concern to the resort management - they will enforce measures to protect guests, staff, and property
  • Activities may be curtailed in advance of the storm
  • Resort might have to evacuate due to the storm, ending your vacation
  • A previous storm may have made reaching your destination impossible, causing cancellation
  • Vacation destination is in a fixed location which can't move to avoid a storm
  • Majority of activities are outdoors (such as water sports) so there is little to do during heavy rains of a tropical storm
  • It is highly likely that your vacation could be cancelled or terminated early due to weather
Sea - Cruise
  • Can select cruise destination based on past history of tropical storm activity impacting the region.
  • Ships can adjust their schedule to avoid approaching tropical storms and other severe weather
  • Even if the embarkation port is unreachable or damaged from a prior storm, alternate plans can be made to depart from a different location
  • There are activities indoors  (often including water sports) so there is still plenty to do during heavy rains of a tropical storm
  • It is unlikely that a cruise will be cancelled or terminated early due to weather
  • Safety is of utmost concern to the cruise line management - they will enforce measures to protect guests, staff, and property
  • You may not get to the destination(s) you planned
  • Ports may be skipped and others substituted
  • Embarkation and debarkation ports could be changed causing travel deviations (eg. flights)
  • There could be rough seas causing discomfort for those that have problems with motion sickness
  • Depending on your cabin location on the ship, you may feel the effects of the sea more than others

Flexibility is a Must

Each of you will look at the table above and draw your own conclusions.  One thing we want to point out is that your plans should be flexible if you are traveling during hurricane season.  If you desire to get away to some tropical destination and aren't set on a particular port, a cruise could be the perfect choice.  For example: it is highly probable that an East Caribbean vacation could instantly become a Western Caribbean cruise if a tropical storm warning is posted for the other region.

In 2016, a rare January Atlantic hurricane, Alex, made landfall in The Azores on January 13th. This was just the second hurricane on record to form in that basin during the month of January. The last hurricane that formed in the Atlantic during January was in 1938, according to NOAA's database.

Meanwhile in the Central Pacific, there was another storm forming about the same time.  Hurricane Pali became the earliest hurricane on record in the Central Pacific Ocean.

The extremely active 2017 Atlantic hurricane season was one of the most destructive on record. Damage costs exceeded 250 billion dollars in the United States alone, while recovery for the worst hit Caribbean islands such as Dominica may take years. Several hundred people died, and the lives of millions were impacted.  Several cruise itineraries were changed to protect passengers, ships, and crew.  Many ships participated in humanitarian relief efforts as well.

2019 CSU Atlantic Hurricane Prediction

2019 Atlantic Hurricane Forecast

Forecasters at the Colorado State University are predicting that the 2018 Atlantic basin hurricane season will have slightly below-normal activity. The season begins June 1st and continues through November 30th.

Their current (April 4th) forecast predicts a slightly below-average probability for major hurricanes making landfall along the United States coastline and in the Caribbean.

It is impossible to precisely predict this season’s hurricane activity in early April.

As is customary, NOAA made their first prediction at the end of May. So, why does Colorado State University's team of scientists create this forecast? Mainly because the public is curious about predictions based on the current global oceanic and atmospheric conditions. The forecasting team created their predictions using a statistical model based on 29 years worth of data.  This is the 36th year in which the CSU Tropical Meteorology Project has made forecasts of the upcoming season’s Atlantic basin hurricane activity.

Not the storm you are looking for?  Click Image or Here
According to CSU scientists, "The current weak El Niño event appears likely to maintain intensity or perhaps even strengthen during the summer/fall. The tropical Atlantic is slightly cooler than normal, while the subtropical Atlantic is quite warm, and the far North Atlantic is anomalously cool. The anomalously cold sea surface temperatures in the far North Atlantic lead us to believe that the Atlantic Multi-decadal Oscillation is in its negative phase. There is considerable uncertainty as to what the configuration of Atlantic sea surface temperatures will look like for the peak of the Atlantic hurricane season."

Coastal residents are reminded that it only takes one hurricane making landfall to make it an active season for them, and they need to prepare the same for every season, regardless of how much or how little activity is predicted.

The April forecast calls for 13 named tropical storms with 5  strengthening to hurricane status. Of those hurricanes, 2 are predicted to be a major hurricane (Category 3,4, or 5).

The team forecasts a 48% chance of one major hurricane making landfall on the U.S. coastline (compared to 52% for last century), 28% for U.S. East Coast Including Peninsula Florida (average for last century is 31%), 28% for Gulf Coast from the Florida Panhandle westward to Brownsville (average for last century is 30%) and a 39% chance for the Caribbean (compared to 42% average for last century).

Another reason why Colorado State University publishes forecasts is for hurricane preparedness.   We too are publishing this information, along with updates throughout hurricane season, to help protect life and property when danger approaches.

As I've said many times,  the cruise line industry has safety of passengers, crew, and vessels as their number one priority.   The cruise lines work closely with the NHC and other agencies to monitor all sorts of weather conditions, including tropical storms.   The ships may alter courses and cancel ports of call in order to maintain the level of safety for all onboard.  We will keep you posted about any known itinerary changes during hurricane season.   Should your cruise itinerary change due to a tropical storm, don't be upset, but rather thank the Captain and crew for taking you out of harm's way.  Read our blog post 4 Things To Help Plan Vacation in Hurricane Season...

Akaroa by Sailing Ketch

Fox II - Akaroa

Akaroa Harbour is home to Hectors dolphins, yellow-eyed and blue penguins, New Zealand fur seals, albatross and other sea birds. We love seeing wildlife up close, so we looked for an excursion that would give us that opportunity.  There were two excursions to pick from; we selected the Wildlife Cruise by Sailing Ketch.

After a short tender boat ride to shore, we boarded Fox II, the oldest gaffed rigged ketch in the area. It was built in Auckland, New Zealand in 1922. She was originally a sailing cargo vessel, then a fishing boat, and since being overhauled it 1995, it has been used for excursions.

We were surrounded by giant volcanic sea cliffs, caves and rock formations along our journey. The tour began with a close look at one of the caves. After sailing around the harbour viewing various sea birds, the ketch set a course in search of Hectors dolphins, the smallest and rarest marine dolphins in the world. They have distinct black facial markings, short stocky bodies and a dorsal fin shaped like a Mickey Mouse ear.  The crew guarantees that guests will see dolphins.  Their secret is a silent running vessel, along with the classical music serenade they put on for the dolphins.

Happy Mother's Day 2019

 Happy Mother's Day

Today across America, we celebrate our mothers, both living and deceased.   It is fitting that honor be given to mothers, for without them, we wouldn't be here.   Setting aside a day to honor mothers dates back centuries and can be traced to the 1600's in Greece, where there were celebrations of Rhea, the Mother of the Gods.  The history is quite fascinating.  To read more, I'd suggest reading the following article on the web:  The History of Mother's Day

Mother's Day as we know it today was first officially proclaimed by President Woodrow Wilson on May 9, 1914, when he made an official announcement proclaiming Mother's Day as a national holiday that was to be held each year on the 2nd Sunday of May. The tradition of giving a Mother's Day Proclamation continues to this day with each President of the United States doing so every year.

Mother's Day isn't only celebrated in the United States, but across the world.  There are several different dates however as can be seen here.
If you are looking for something different to give to mom this year, it's not too late.

Would she like to get away, with or without the family?    Perhaps she would like a few days of pampering and just relaxing on a cruise vacation.  Talk to the rest of the family and see what they think.

Happy Mother's Day to all the moms on your special day.   We hope that you enjoy your day with family and friends.

So what do you give a mother who has given you the most precious gift, life?   It is pretty common to give moms flowers, candy, jewelry, greeting cards, and dinner on Mother's Day.   Often young children give something made in school or do little things, like cleaning up their rooms.   To the mom, it typically doesn't matter how big or small the gift is.  In fact, they might be just as happy with just the words "I love you mom".
