Remembering Pearl Harbor

This is not our typical post, but today is not a typical day either.   Today marks the 80th anniversary of the surprise attack on Pearl Harbor, Hawaii.  

These pictures were taken during a visit to the U.S.S. Arizona Memorial during a cruise vacation to Hawaii. The background of this image is the oil slick which still rises to the surface of the water around the memorial. 

These images remain in my mind several years after our visit. We were so moved by our visit, we went back the next day for a second visit. 

Out of respect to the Sailors and Marines entombed below, visitors are asked to remain silent during their visit. The silence adds to the eerie atmosphere at the memorial.

Eighty years ago today, at precisely the moment that I started this column, the United States was drawn into World War II when Pearl Harbor was attacked. While this was before I was born, it is still a date that is impossible for me to forget.

Louis Conter was aboard the USS Arizona when the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor on Dec. 7, 1941. More than 1,170 of the ship’s crewmen died, and 2,403 total lives were lost that Sunday morning. But Conter survived, and he bravely served in the Navy until 1967 when he retired at the rank of lieutenant commander. The Knights of Columbus salutes Conter, a member of Father Nicholas Phelan Council 1875, on the 80th anniversary of the attack on Pearl Harbor.

"December 7, 1941 — a date which will live in infamy — the United States of America was suddenly and deliberately attacked by naval and air forces of the Empire of Japan.” — Franklin Delano Roosevelt

The attack caught America by surprise, killing 2,400 Americans, sinking 12 ships and destroying 188 aircraft -- and triggering U.S. entry into World War II. In fact, the U.S. declared war on Japan the following day when FDR made the above quote.

Seventy-six years ago today the United States was drawn into World War II when Pearl Harbor was attacked. While this was before I was born, it is still a date that is impossible for me to forget.

Ceremonies mark the anniversary today.  Among those will be a special tribute to the battleship Arizona, which exploded and sank during the attack, killing more than 1,100 officers and servicemen aboard. The ship's hull remains at the bottom of Pearl Harbor, marked by the USS Arizona Memorial overhead.

Visiting Hawaii by cruise ship is a great way to see the islands.  Instead of making your own arrangements to move from one island to another, the cruise itinerary is already planned for you.  All you need to decide is what excursions you want to do on your own or with a group.  You can choose from a 7-night itinerary on Norwegian Cruise Line's Pride of America or a longer cruise, typically 14 or 15 night Circle Cruise which starts somewhere in California, goes to Hawaii and returns.

In our previous post, Been on Caribbean Cruise What Next, we spoke about first-time cruisers who sailed to the Bahamas and Caribbean on short voyages.   We also took a look at several longer cruises of  7 night duration.   This article will discuss more alternatives, including longer voyages.

Seasonal Travel

While there are several options beyond the Caribbean, the time of year that you decide to travel may limit your choices.  For example, the Alaskan cruise season goes from May through late August / early September.   Our next destination, can only be enjoyed in the Summer and early Fall.

Canada / New England

Cruising Life Cycle

The majority of first-time cruisers start with a short 3 - 5 night Caribbean or Bahamas cruise.  These usually depart from somewhere in Florida, but they could also depart from other local ports such as Mobile, AL or New Orleans, LA, to name a couple alternate ports.

Is Cruising Right for You

There are several reasons why most new cruisers select those short cruises.   First of all, they want to answer the questions they have around whether or not they would like it.  Often first-time cruisers are just starting out in their jobs, and can't get away for a long vacation.

Cruising is all about choices.  There are many misconceptions about cruising which we have addressed in past columns.   See our Cruise Rookies page for some background information that will help answer questions that you might have. 

7-Night Cruises

There is no right or wrong answer to the question "What Next?".  However, as vacation time starts to accrue, most cruisers set their sights on longer trips.   Many cruise destinations exist which can be visited in a week's time.   Once again, the Caribbean makes up the majority of those itineraries, however you'll now be able to explore different ports of call.  But, that isn't the only possibility.

Alaska

One of our favorite destinations beyond the Caribbean is Alaska.   Despite living in the cold mid-west, I convinced my husband to travel to Alaska on a cruise many years ago.   It wasn't hard once I showed him some of the scenery that we'd visit.

While we suggest extending your time pre or post-cruise in Alaska, in order to really explore the area, a 7-night Inside Passage can be the beginning of your Alaska adventure.   These are often trips of a life-time, especially if you can include a cruise-tour.  READ MORE

Bermuda

Cruise to exquisite pink sand beaches, crystal clear waters, and warm sunshine of Bermuda. Your ship will sail from New York or Boston to this island country.  Base of operations for your exploration will typically be Kings Wharf.  It is easy to explore Bermuda via public transportation including ferry boat.  READ MORE

After two or three days in Bermuda your ship will set sail for return to the embarkation port.  This is another great cruise itinerary for cruise rookies, since you get the onboard experience with limited time actually at sea.   So, if you have any concerns about sailing, this cruise might be for you.

Europe

When you are ready for a longer cruise, set sail for the adventure of a lifetime & see where history was made.  Most first-time European cruisers start out with a Mediterranean cruise.  These usually set sail from historic ports like Rome, Italy or Barcelona, Spain.  Airfare will most likely be your largest expense of the cruise, so we recommend booking a 10 or 12 night voyage instead of a 7 night.  It's also a good idea to spend one or more days in your embarkation port prior to the cruise.   This maximizes the value and also helps get you used to the timezone change.

Hawaii

From palm-fringed beaches to tropical sunsets, Polynesian luaus and glowing volcanoes... there's something for everyone in Hawaii.  Chose from a 7-night inter-island cruise to longer cruises that visit additional ports in the Pacific Ocean.  Since you use the ship as your base, this is a very relaxing way to experience multiple Hawaiian islands without the hassle of changing hotels and flying between the islands. Hawaii Bracing for Two Hurricanes

Approaching Hawaii

Not one, but two Hurricanes are heading for the Hawaiian Islands.

Iselle still heading for the Big Island, maintaining hurricane intensity.  On the forecast track, the center of Iselle is expected to pass very near or over the Big Island Thursday night, and pass just south of the smaller islands Friday.

Maximum sustained winds are near 90 mph, 150 km/h, with higher gusts. Some weakening is forecast during the next 48 hours, but Iselle is now expected to be a hurricane as it passes near or over the Big Island.

Update: Iselle was classified as a tropical storm 11 p.m. Thursday Hawaii Standard Time when its winds slowed to 70 mph, putting it below the minimum of 74 mph for a hurricane. The storm is weakening because of several factors, including wind shear chopping at the system and the Big Island's terrain above the water, said Chris Brenchley, meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Honolulu.

Early this morning, Julio strengthened to a Category 2 Hurricane.While there are no coastal watches and warnings currently in effect for this storm, interests in the Hawaiian Islands should monitor the progress of Julio.

Update: Hurricane Julio, a Category 3 storm, is about 1,000 miles behind Iselle in the Pacific.
Maximum sustained winds are near 120 mph, 195 km/h, with higher gusts. Julio is a category three hurricane on the saffir-simpson hurricane wind scale. Gradual weakening is expected through Saturday.

Weather Alert for Pride of America Guests

At Norwegian Cruise Line, the safety and security of our guests and crew is of the utmost importance. Therefore, the company is closely monitoring the paths of Hurricanes Iselle and Julio in the Pacific.

At this time, we anticipate embarkation for Pride of America’s August 9 sailing will take place as scheduled. Should there be any updates, they will be immediately posted on Norwegian's site.

Tropical Storm Flossie off Hawaiian Islands

Tropical Storm Flossie

The Central Pacific Hurricane Center in Honolulu, Hawaii is issuing advisories on tropical depression Flossie, located in the vicinity of the island of Kauai. The system is moving toward the west northwest at about 18 mph.

The remnants of former tropical depression Flossie is located about 225 miles northwest of Lihue, Kauai. The system is moving toward the west northwest at about 18 mph. There is a near zero percent chance of redevelopment.

Cruise Ship Impact

Norwegian Cruise Line's Pride of America was impacted by Flossie. The line decided to leave Maui a day early, in the abundance of caution, to head out to sea avoiding the approaching storm.The ship returned to its regular schedule today when it docked in Hilo.  No further impacts are expected as the storm weakened.

NOAA Expects Below-normal Central Pacific Hurricane Season

NOAA’s Central Pacific Hurricane Center today announced that climate conditions point to a below-normal season in the Central Pacific Basin this year.

For 2013, the outlook calls for a 70 percent chance of a below-normal season, a 25 percent chance of a near-normal season, and a 5 percent chance of an above-normal season. We expect 1 to 3 tropical cyclones to affect the central Pacific this season. An average season has 4 to 5 tropical cyclones, which include tropical depressions, tropical storms, and hurricanes.

NOAA issued its central Pacific hurricane outlook at a news conference in Honolulu, and urged Hawaii residents to be fully prepared before the hurricane season, which begins June 1 and runs until Nov. 30.

“I encourage the public to become weather-ready by signing up for weather alerts, developing a family emergency plan, and building an emergency kit before hurricane season begins,” said Ray Tanabe, director of NOAA’s Central Pacific Hurricane Center. “Just because the season is predicted to be 'below normal' does not mean that a single storm cannot have significant impacts.” 

Be Prepared

For those of you that were Boy Scouts, you are very familiar with the slogan "Be Prepared".    When it comes to seasonal weather, like the hurricane season,  nothing could be more important than following that advice.   As we've seen this week in other parts of the country, storms can develop quickly with or without warning and knowing what to do can mean the difference between life and death.

Next week is National Hurricane Preparedness Week and we will cover topics that will help you prepare for the upcoming season.   Obviously those living in regions where hurricanes occur on a regular basis should pay close attention but in this day and age where people travel across the country and globe, you can find yourself in an area that is experiencing severe weather, like a tropical storm, and knowing what to do will be very important.

Pride of America Gets Make-Over

Enhancements in 2013

Norwegian Cruise Line has announced that its U.S.-flagged cruise ship, Pride of America, which sails the Hawaiian Islands, will undergo a $30M refurbishment in Spring 2013.

The ship will enter a 14 day dry-dock in Honolulu, HI, March 23, 2013, at which time it will receive major renovations including the addition of 24 ultra-luxurious suites, four Studio staterooms and four inside staterooms; Moderno Churrascaria, the line's signature Brazilian-style steakhouse; ship wide wireless internet connectivity; new carpeting throughout; flat screen televisions in all staterooms; updated décor; upgrades to the fitness center; new directional signage; renovations to the gift shop, photo gallery and art gallery; and much more.

• Four Studio cabins will be added for solo travelers
• Twenty-four suites will be added
• Four inside cabins

Ports of call include an overnight in Kahului, Maui; Hilo, Hawai`i; Kona, Hawai`i; an overnight in Nãwiliwili, Kaua`i; and an afternoon cruise past the breathtaking Nãpali Coast.  This ship is the only one in the entire industry that sails a seven-day itinerary in the islands.

For several years, the cruise itineraries have been limited from ports on the West Coast of the United States.The Mexican Riviera cruises continued to diminish and even the California Coastal cruises all but disappeared.

There were of course cruises to  Alaska, but even those were primarily sailing from Seattle or Vancouver instead of San Francisco.

Princess Cruises has just announced that the newly renovated Grand Princess will homeport in San Francisco starting in May, 2013.

San Francisco Departures

10-night Alaska sailings, departing between May 10 and September 7, 2013

10-night Mexico sailings, departing on September 17, 2013, and March 5, 2014, and featuring two new ports for Princess -- Loreto and La Paz

7-night California Coastal sailings, departing on September 27 and October 19, 2013, and March 15 and April 6, 2014

Grand Princess Makeover

Last spring, Grand Princess, the 109,000-ton, 2,600-passenger vessel, underwent the most extensive drydock in Princess Cruises history with a 24-day drydock that transformed it from top to bottom and also made the vessel a media star with daily video updates that attracted more than a half million views.

Now that the ship has been transformed, passengers will find a completely new Piazza atrium, several new eateries -- including Alfredo's Pizzeria and the Crown Grill -- and the line's first specialty tea lounge called Leaves. Also included in the renovation were seven new window suites; remodeled casino, boutiques and art gallery; enhancements to the Horizon Court, Lotus Spa, and wedding chapel; and the addition of Crooner's Martini Lounge. A new nightclub, The One5, replaced Skywalkers.

Pre and Post-Cruise Destinations

San Francisco will always have a warm place in our hearts, since we spent a portion of our honeymoon there and have visited the city several times in the years since then.   It makes a perfect destination for extending your cruise vacation either before or after the cruise, depending  on the itinerary.

Recently, interest in San Francisco has been rekindled by the television show Alcatraz that takes place on "The Rock".  Some of the most notorious criminals were incarcerated there.    Of course there are other less sinister locations for you to visit, such as Golden Gate Bridge and the surrounding area, Fisherman's Wharf, Muir Woods and the Petrified Forest, and of course the Wine Country in Napa Valley and Sonoma.  There are many other destinations within an hour or so drive from San Francisco.

Carnival Splendor Moves

to New York in 2013

Carnival will reposition Carnival Miracle to the West Coast following a special Panama Canal voyage, and bring Carnival Splendor to New York, following three spectacular South America cruises. 

Carnival Splendor, a four-year-old, 3,006-passenger ship, will be redeployed in spring 2013 to New York City, where it will sail year-round Caribbean, Bahamas and Florida cruises.  The Splendor had sailed year-round itineraries from Long Beach-to-Mexico since 2009.  The Splendor will be upgraded with Fun Ship 2.0 amenities in a Q4 2012 dry dock.

Year-Round from New York


Beginning March 23, 2013, Carnival Splendor will launch a year-round schedule of eight-day Caribbean cruises from New York with three uniquely different itineraries that showcase the brilliant diversity of destinations throughout the Caribbean, Bahamas and Florida. 

The eight-day itineraries include Bahamas/Florida cruises with port calls to Port Canaveral (Orlando), Fla., Nassau and Freeport, The Bahamas; Eastern Caribbean departures with visits to San Juan, Puerto Rico, St. Thomas, U.S.V.I. and Grand Turk; and Exotic Eastern Caribbean cruises to the private Bahamian island of Half Moon Cay, Grand Turk and Nassau. There will also be a special seven-day Bermuda cruise departing April 16, 2013.

Less Capacity for West Coast


The "losers" in this redeployment appear to be those passengers hoping to go to the Mexican Riviera and other parts west from their own backyard port in Long Beach, CA.

All the major cruise lines have been gradually redeploying their ships from the West Coast market, citing increased violence and drug-related incidents in Mexico. 

While on the surface that seems to make sense, given news reports, one has to wonder if that were really the case, would there be any ships sailing there at all.  So, the real truth is that the cruise lines just aren't making the amount of money they'd hope for in that market.

Carnival Miracle, an eight-year-old, 2,124-passenger ship, will move from the Big Apple to the West Coast in Spring 2013.  The Miracle will sail a seasonal Mexican Riviera itinerary along with Alaska and Hawaii itineraries which had currently been offered on Carnival Spirit.  Carnival Miracle recently underwent its facelift with the addition of the adults-only Serenity and other enhancements.

Panama Canal

Carnival Miracle will operate a 15-day Panama Canal cruise from New York to Long Beach March 16-31, 2013, positioning the vessel for its year-round West Coast deployment. In addition to the unforgettable experience of transiting the Panama Canal, the cruise will visit beautiful and historic destinations in five different countries, including Grand Turk, Turks & Caicos Islands; Cartagena, Colombia; Puntarenas, Costa Rica; Puerto Quetzal, Guatemala; and Cabo San Lucas, Mexico.

Mexican Riviera

Carnival Miracle will operate seven-day Mexican Riviera cruises from Long Beach featuring the seaside resort town of Puerto Vallarta and a special two-day visit to beautiful Cabo San Lucas. These popular cruises will be offered in April 2013 and from October 2013 through April 2014.

Alaska

Carnival Miracle will reposition from Long Beach to Seattle in spring 2013 to operate the line’s seven-day “Fun Ship” Alaska program. Following a special eight-day Alaska cruise from Vancouver to Seattle departing April 29, the week-long voyages will depart from Seattle every Tuesday from May 7 to Sept. 10, 2013, calling at the scenic Alaska destinations of Skagway, Juneau and Ketchikan, as well as Victoria, British Columbia, and cruising Tracy Arm Fjord. This unforgettable Alaskan experience will offer consumers myriad opportunities to explore and enjoy the awe-inspiring scenery and wildlife of The Last Frontier.

 

Hawaii

Carnival Miracle will offer several 15-day Hawaii cruises in 2013 and 2014. Three cruises will operate roundtrip from Long Beach with departures on Oct. 19 and Dec. 7, 2013, as well as Jan. 18, 2014. There will also be a 15-day Hawaii cruise from Long Beach to Vancouver departing April 14, 2013 and another from Vancouver to Long Beach departing Sept. 17, 2013. These voyages feature some of the Aloha State’s most beautiful and breathtaking ports of call, including Hilo, Kona, Nawiliwili, Kahului, and Honolulu.

Carnival Spirit, a ten-year old, 2124 passenger ship, will reposition to Australia to offer the line's first cruises in that region. (more on this in another post).

Pearl Harbor 70 Years Later

70th Anniversary of 

Pearl Harbor Attack

"December 7, 1941 — a date which will live in infamy — the United States of America was suddenly and deliberately attacked by naval and air forces of the Empire of Japan.” — Franklin Delano Roosevelt

The attack caught America by surprise, killing 2,400 Americans, sinking 12 ships and destroying 188 aircraft -- and triggering U.S. entry into World War II. In fact, the U.S. declared war on Japan the following day when FDR made the above quote.

Seventy years ago today, at precisely the moment that I started this column, the United States was drawn into World War II when Pearl Harbor was attacked. While this was before I was born, it is still a date that is impossible for me to forget.



Ceremonies mark the anniversary today.  Among those will be a special tribute to the battleship Arizona, which exploded and sank during the attack, killing more than 1,100 officers and servicemen aboard. The ship's hull remains at the bottom of Pearl Harbor, marked by the USS Arizona Memorial overhead.

These pictures were taken during a visit to the U.S.S. Arizona Memorial during a cruise vacation to Hawaii. The background of this image is the oil slick which still rises to the surface of the water around the memorial.

These images remain in my mind several years after our visit. We were so moved by our visit, we went back the next day for a second visit. 

Out of respect to the Sailors and Marines entombed below, visitors are asked to remain silent during their visit. The silence adds to the eerie atmosphere at the memorial.

I am often asked what is my favorite or memorial cruise vacation. As I have always said, that is a very difficult question to answer. Every cruise vacation has one or more memorable moments. The visit to Pearl Harbor definitely ranks among those memorable moments for me along with our visit to the Normandy beaches.

Cruise vacations to Hawaii, often start or end in Honolulu, Oahu. I would encourage you to visit the U.S.S. Arizona Memorial during your visit there. It is even more moving when you visit on or around December 7th.

Great things are happening from coast to coast in 2012! Disney Cruise Line now offers cruises departing from exciting ports like New York, Seattle, Galveston and Los Angeles to a variety of fantastic new destinations. Disney is cruising to more of your favorite vacation destinations than ever before.

Sailing from New York City, Galveston, Seattle, Los Angeles

Fleet expansion is enabling Disney to sail out of ports other than Port Canaveral, Florida.  The Disney Dream entered service in January, and a fourth ship, the Disney Fantasy, is scheduled to launch next April.

Beginning May 25, 2012, the Disney Magic will sail a total of 20 cruises from New York, including eight-night cruises to the Bahamas and five-night cruises up the New England coast to Canada.  The Magic will sail 12 seven-night cruises from Galveston to the Western Caribbean, starting Sept. 22, 2012.

Disney is operating Alaska cruises for the first time starting next month. The Wonder will sail out of Vancouver this year and in 2012, it will sail 7-Night Alaska Cruises from Seattle, Washington.

Disney Wonder will sail 7-Night Mexican Riviera cruises from Los Angeles for the majority of 2012 and four 7-Night Pacific Coast cruises from Los Angeles.  For the first time, the Wonder will operate one 15-night voyage to Hawaii from Los Angeles, visiting the Big Island, Oahu, Maui and Kauai.
