Celebrating a Special Birthday at Cagney's Steakhouse

          Craving a Steak Dinner?

Norwegian Cruise line's signature Cagney's Steakhouse proudly serves certified Angus Beef® brand steaks. How do you like yours done? You decide from Rare to Well Done, although I'd suggest something in the middle.

We were first exposed to Norwegian Cruise Lines's Freestyle Dining in 2001, when we sailed the inaugural voyage on Norwegian Sun. It was the first ship they build specifically to take advantage of their new dining options.

Much has changed since then, when we had to wait in long lines to enter a restaurant to today, where you can pre-reserve your dining options, or check onboard to see what venue has a short wait.  To enjoy specialty dining venues, select  al a carte pricing onboard the ship or purchase a dining package in advance of your voyage.

While we still like "traditional dining" where you have an assigned dining time and specific table assignment, freestyle dining is a welcome change, especially when you have a set schedule to adhere to, like we do during our conference cruise.  You decide when and where and with whom you want to dine each evening during your cruise.

Celebrate a Special Occasion

Cagney's Steakhouse was the scene of a special birthday dinner for one of our fellow agent friends during our Norwegian Bliss sailing.

Pictured here is the 20 oz. Potterhouse Steak, Cheese & Vegetable Marmite Soup, Onion Rings, and Au-Gratin Potatoes.  See the menu above for additional choices and al a carte pricing.  We finished the meal with a chocolate layer Birthday Cake provided by Norwegian Cruise Line.

Norwegian Epic Freestyle Choices

Norwegian EPIC
Freestyle Dining

 21 Dining Options - 11 Complimentary

Norwegian Freestyle Cruising is all about choice.  When Norwegian EPIC debuts this summer, Norwegian Cruise Line will take Freestyle Dining to a new level.   It was announced that the ship will feature an extensive number of complimentary Freestyle dining options - 11 out of 21 total - that are included in the cruise fare. The additional 10 dining options will have a nominal cover charge.

Our first introduction to Freestyle Dining was on Norwegian Sun's inaugural voyage in September, 2001.   That was the first Norwegian Cruise Line ship that was actually designed for the emerging Freestyle Dining program.     In the decade since, the line continued to evolve the program, adding choices and making the program easier for guests to decide when and what to eat.

What is Freestyle Dining?   Simply put, it's no set dining times, no assigned tables, a relaxed dress code and more restaurants than days in the week on every ship, so you can enjoy whatever you're hungry for, whenever you're hungry.

Norwegian Cruise Line expanded the restaurant choices on all ships to include everything from tapas to teppanyaki. Your selection ranged from as many as nine (now 11) fantastic dining options included in your cruise fare to a savory array of specialty restaurants created for those extra-special nights out. What are you hungry for?

Manhattan Room
Those that will be free of charge are:

· Taste, the atrium restaurant serving traditional and contemporary cuisine;
· Manhattan Room, reminiscent of an elegant supper club complete with music, dancing and entertainment;
· O'Sheehan's Neighborhood Bar & Grill, serving American favorites and comfort food, 24 hours;
· Garden Café, Norwegian's signature action station casual restaurant;
· Great Outdoors, the pool-side grill;
· Spice H20, serving Latin and Asian-influenced cuisine in the adults-only complex;
· Atrium Cafe and Wine Bar;
· Studio Lounge, serving snacks and light fare;
· Epic Club, the elegant, exclusive eatery available to Norwegian Epic's Suite and Villa guests;
· Courtyard Grill, the more casual, outdoor area of the Epic Grill, open for breakfast and lunch; and
· 24-hour room service.

“It’s important for our guests to know that Freestyle Cruising on Norwegian Epic will offer the ultimate in freedom and flexibility, especially when it comes to dining,” said Kevin Sheehan, Norwegian Cruise Line’s chief executive officer. “With that flexibility comes a wide-range of complimentary dining venues and options.”

In addition, Norwegian also announced the cover charges for Norwegian Epic’s specialty dining and entertainment venues (the choice is up to you - the most expensive is $25 per person unless you get really hungry at one of the al a carte choices).

Cover charges for Norwegian Epic's specialty dining/entertainment venues:

· La Cucina, Tuscan-style eatery serving regional Italian specialties, $10 per person;
· Cirque Dreams & Dinner, two shows nightly including a three-course meal, $15 for general seating/$20 per person for preferred seating;
· Shanghai’s, Norwegian Epic’s new Chinese restaurant serving a delicious mix of Chinese dishes and noodle bar specialties, $15 per person;
· Shanghai’s Noodle Bar, a la carte pricing;
· Wasabi, expansive sushi and sake bar, a la carte pricing;
· Le Bistro, Norwegian’s elegant bistro serving classic French cuisine with an American flair, $20 per person;
· Moderno Churrascaria, expansive salad bar and choice of a variety of meats served by tableside passadors, $18 per person;
Teppanyaki
· Cagney’s Steakhouse, the line’s signature American steakhouse, $25 per person;
· Teppanyaki, the largest signature Japanese experiential restaurant at sea, $25 per person; and
· Pizza delivery, $5, available 24 hours around the ship.

We are happy to see some of our favorites, like Cagney's Steakhouse and Teppanyaki, and are excited with the new choices such as Cirque Dreams & Dinner.

"With our specialty restaurants, some guests may choose to dine in one of these venues just once or twice during their cruise to celebrate a special occasion," added Sheehan. "At the same time, others may want to sample a different specialty restaurant each evening to experience a new type of cuisine. That’s the great thing about Freestyle Cruising–the choice is up to our guests to decide how they want to customize their trip.”

NCL Dawn Bermuda - Cagney's Steakhouse

I hope you are enjoying your virtual tour of our Norwegian Dawn cruise to Bermuda. So far, I've discussed our first days onboard the Dawn, the various Bermuda attractions that we saw on this cruise, and some of our onboard experiences.

As we sail away from Bermuda, back to New York, the good times are not over by any means. We still have two nights with a full day at sea before we return to New York. So, let the party begin!

I don't know about you, but one of the other highlights of traveling is the possibility of enjoying a nice meal in a restaurant that wouldn't be found in my hometown area. You might be thinking, that's pretty easy to accomplish when you're on a cruise ship. None of those restaurants will be found in your hometown. Ok, you got me there.

Humor me for awhile as I search out our dinner venue. Just like you might do in a popular dining area, you go from restaurant to restaurant, checking out the menu before making your selection.

As I've mentioned in an earlier post, there are many choices onboard the Norwegian Dawn. All the menus are posted so you can go "shopping" for your dinner choice. Once you've made your selection, you can make a reservation (either for the same night or the next).

We made a reservation for Cagney's Steakhouse. This isn't the first time we've gone to Cagney's onboard a NCL ship, so we were already familiar with the menu and the atmosphere.

Cagney's is decorated like a speakeasy from the Roaring 20's. There are various size tables to accommodate your group. After being escorted to our table, our waiter greeted us and took our drink order. He answered our questions about the menu and disappeared to get our drinks.

As you probably suspect, the meal consists of several courses. You can have as many of the selections as you like. Click on the menu above to see all the choices. The starters we had included the jumbo shrimp cocktail, and salads.

There are several main course selections that you can chose from. These range from a 10 ounce New York Steak to the 32 ounce Porterhouse Steak. If you don't want steak, there are several fish selections, veal, and even a vegetarian selection. We have a theory that hasn't failed us over the years. If you go to a Steakhouse, order steak. If you want seafood, go to a Seafood restaurant. In this case, you wouldn't go wrong with any selection. We chose the New York Steak and T-Bone Steak - both of which were fabulous.

To complete the main course, you can add as many side orders as you like. Our selections included sauteed mushrooms, onion rings, Cagney's Fries (you've got to try those if you like fries - they are made with white truffle oil and Parmesan cheese), and mashed potatoes. There were three of us dining together, thus the large selection of sides. You get your own order of Cagney's Fries and you tell the waiter which of the remaining sides you want him to serve.

Assuming that you still have room, the waiter will present the dessert selections for your final choice of the meal. We definitely left Cagney's feeling very content.

As with the other specialty restaurants onboard Norwegian Dawn, there is a cover charge added to your account. It is $20 per person, but is well worth it. The attentive staff, the nice atmosphere, and the wonderful food made for a very enjoyable meal. Where could you get a steak meal like that for $20 in New York or wherever home is? If you were only going to one specialty restaurant during your cruise, I would definitely put Cagney's on your short list to consider.

Now that dinner is complete, we're off to a show. See you next time.
