Celebrating World Oceans Day 2022

UN World Oceans Day

June is "National Oceans Month" - Know your ocean!

Together we can make a huge difference for the ocean. Join me in celebrating #WorldOceansDay this June 8th

We all love the ocean. It takes care of us - by providing food, medicine, oxygen and fresh air, transportation, communication… not to mention fun, recreation, and inspiration! The ocean links people all over the world together, and we couldn’t survive without it.

Royal Caribbean Group

Today is World Oceans Day, and we are celebrating the seven seas with our Blue Green Promise. Thirty years ago, we launched our first environmental protection initiative, Save the Waves. Since then, we’ve continued our efforts to protect one of our most precious natural resources — our oceans. Our Blue Green Promise is our renewed commitment to support resilient and sustainable ocean communities worldwide — a promise we will work to live up to every day. Learn more: Blue Green Promise

World Oceans Day UN Message
World Oceans Day reminds every one of the major role the oceans have in everyday life. They are the lungs of our Planet and a major source of food and medicine and a critical part of the biosphere.

The purpose of the Day is to inform the public of the impact of human actions on the ocean, develop a worldwide movement of citizens for the ocean, and mobilize and unite the world’s population on a project for the sustainable management of the world's oceans.

This year, the United Nations will host the first hybrid celebration of the annual event on 8 June 2022, hosted in-person at the UN Headquarters in New York to be broadcasted live. It will highlight the 2022 theme of “Revitalization: collective action for the ocean”.

Visit the official website to learn more about the International Day, find out about news and celebrations, or read the latest news and reports on the oceans.

This World Oceans Day, give back to the ocean by promising to do at least one thing in your life to help keep it healthy. A healthy ocean means healthy humans, dolphins, corals, turtles, fish, and other wildlife for the future. So, pick a promise and post a selfie on social media to share how you’re doing your part for our ocean.

Quantum of the Seas Adjusts Protocols

According to a Reuters news story, Singapore's health ministry on Thursday reported 24 locally transmitted COVID-19 cases, the highest daily number since mid-September, with 17 of the fresh cases linked to a cluster at Changi Airport. This has prompted changes onboard Royal Caribbean Quantum of the Seas which is sailing short cruises to nowhere out of Singapore.

Singapore Raises Alert Level

"Over the past two weeks several clusters of infections have emerged, coupled with a pattern of local unlinked community cases. These developments have demonstrated higher attack rates and secondary transmission occurs in “mask-off” settings, households, and at eateries. Given this, the Multi-Ministry Taskforce announced additional measures and restrictions under Phase 2 (Heightened Alert) to minimize transmission of the virus in a swift and decisive manner. These measures are additional measures to what was announced on 4 May 2021.

To reduce risks of community transmission, indoor “mask-off” activities such as dine-in F&B establishments will cease. Other activities which will also not be allowed during this period include strenuous indoor exercise class or strenuous individual and group indoor sports and exercise activities. In addition, personalized services which require masks to be removed (e.g. facials and saunas), singing, and the playing of instruments that require intentional expulsion of air (e.g. wind or brass instruments) will also not be allowed. The following measures will take effect from Sunday, 16 May 2021 through to Sunday, 13 June 2021."

Royal Caribbean Adjust Protocols

Royal Caribbean quickly responded to the change in the alert level by notifying guests booked on Quantum of the Seas from May 17 - June 13 of the following changes:
  • Guest capacity is reduced to 25 percent occupancy.
  • Groups are limited to two guests. This means that at most, the ship will have 1,025 passengers aboard.
  • All restaurants are closed and guests will get room service options or "grab and go" from select restaurants aboard.
  • Capacity for live entertainment shows will be reduced to a maximum of 50 guests and live singing will not be available.
  • Permitted onboard activities, like those in Seaplex, Activity Zone and Pool Zone, will continue to operate at reduced capacity and with enhanced social distancing measures.
  • Masks will be required in the indoor pool.

Carnival Not Moving Ships from US

Carnival update
Watch Video (click here)

Following CLIA's request to the CDC to allow cruising from U.S. ports to resume by July and the response from the CDC that it is sticking to the end date in the Conditional Sail Order of expiration of November 1, 2021, cruise lines have been making their own announcements regarding their plans.

Some cruise lines, such as Royal Caribbean and Celebrity Cruises have announced cruises starting in June from new homeports outside the U.S.  See posts in our mini-series:  Let's Get Traveling.

Carnival Cruise Line Update
  • Not Moving Ships away from U.S. ports
  • No decision on vaccine requirements
  • No decision on June sailings
  • Extension of final payment to April 30 for June departures
  • June sailings can be cancelled up to April 30 with no penalty
Carnival Cruise Line president Christine Duffy said:
“Here at Carnival Cruise Line, we currently do not have any plans to move our ships away from their U.S. homeports. I’ve always said, Carnival Cruise Line is America’s Cruise Line. We sail from 14 U.S. homeports, 50% of our itineraries are less than 7-day sailings and a significant number of our guests drive to their Carnival cruise vacation.”

She also said that Carnival remains very encouraged by the vaccine rollout and that they are an important tool along with several health protocols. Carnival carries more families than other carriers.  Since no vaccine is available for children, making vaccinations mandatory would limit who would be able to sail at the moment.

We will continue to monitor updates for all cruise lines.  We suggest you bookmark our mini-series and check frequently for updates.   You can also follow us on our various social media platforms.

June is National Zoo and Aquarium month.  We've visited some amazing zoos and aquariums all around the United States and beyond.  During this pandemic, zoos and aquariums are having to adjust in order to keep the animals engaged since there are no regular guest visits.

We hope you are enjoying this series of  "Where is Chris" posts.  We'd love your feedback on our social media.
