Cruise Safe Facts

CDC Warning

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention issued a new advisory Thursday that travelers should avoid traveling by cruise ship, regardless of vaccination status, after a recent surge in positive COVID-19 cases onboard ships.

The agency increased its travel warning for cruises to Level 4 — the highest level — following investigations of dozens of ships that have had outbreaks of the virus.

"Even fully vaccinated travelers may be at risk for getting and spreading COVID-19 variants," the CDC said on its website.

Here are facts about what the cruise industry is doing to cruise safely during COVID.
  • More than 100 cruise ships have returned to U.S. waters, carrying more than one million people from a U.S. port since late June 2021, with a significantly lower incidence rate of COVID-19 than on land. This is just a fraction of the current national positivity rate.
  • The latest data shows that, even with higher rates of testing, the cruise industry continues to achieve significantly lower rates of occurrence of COVID-19—33 percent lower than onshore.
  • While there are exceptions depending on the cruise line, the vast majority of people over the age of 12 are required to be vaccinated on cruise ships making it a very safe way to vacation.
  • Also, all passengers must take a COVID-19 test prior to sailing. No other venue – air travel, concerts, etc. – require such stringent protocols.
  •  The cruise industry is the only industry in the U.S. travel and tourism sector that is requiring both vaccinations and testing for crew and guests.
  • According to the CDC’s color-coding system, a cruise ship may be determined to be “yellow” – and, therefore, subject to CDC observation – if a threshold of 0.10 percent or more passengers (i.e., 7 out of 6,500) have tested positive in the last seven days, or if even just one crewmember tests positive.
  •  The cruising industry is one of the most heavily regulated industries and must meet rigorous testing and standards in order to operate.
  • Cruise industry protocols are unique in their approach to effectively monitor, detect, and respond to potential cases of COVID-19.
  • Protocols encompass the entirety of the cruise experience, incorporating testing, vaccination, screening, sanitation, mask-wearing and other science-backed measures.
  • Many cruise lines have announced additional measures in response to the Omicron variant, including strengthening testing, masking and other requirements, as well as encouraging booster vaccine doses for those eligible.
  • Vaccination rates onboard a cruise ship are upwards of 95 percent—significantly higher than the overall U.S. population which is hovering at 62 percent.
  • In the U.S. alone, the cruise industry administers nearly 10 million tests per week—21x the rate of testing in the United States
We sailed on Celebrity Apex last month for our National Conference with a group of 800 agents and industry experts.   Cruising remains one of the safest activities you can do thanks to the testing and vaccination requirements.   We've had several other guests cruise without incident in the last few weeks.

Keeping Cruise Ships Clean and Sanitary

Cruise Ships Clean & Sanitary

(Updated 10/8/21)

Ship Sanitation is Nothing New

While many business and industries have added sanitation methods to their daily routines after the start of the COVID-19 outbreak, cruise ships just continued with business as usual, with extra frequency.  Signs have always been posted educating the passengers to wash hands frequently and use the sanitizing dispensers available in the public areas of the ship.

Keeping cruise ships clean and sanitary has always been a top priority for Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA) members. While this longstanding cruise line practice may sound minor, COVID-19 has reaffirmed the critical importance of hand hygiene to protecting public health.

Additionally, the industry has a longstanding collaboration with the CDC and the Vessel Sanitation Program (VSP) to make sure ships meet strict sanitation guidelines. As part of the program, cruise ship crews are trained in sanitation and health practices and ships undergo unannounced inspections twice a year, with scores made available to the public. No other travel and tourism or entertainment industry has this type of federal program or oversight.

CLIA cruise lines go to great lengths to support the health and safety of all onboard. From cleaning practices to passenger screening and robust oversight over onboard health and safety practices, the cruise industry is one of the most vigilant industries as it relates to safety, sanitation and public health protocols. 3 Ingredients to Cruising Future

Looking to the Future

What did it take to get cruising restarted in the United States? The following three ingredients were at the core that made cruise resumption possible.

New Protocols

The Healthy Sail Panel, a group of the best minds and leaders in public health, biosecurity, epidemiology, hospitality and maritime operations presented their recommendations to the CDC on behalf of the entire cruise industry.  Their 65-plus-page report includes 74 detailed best practices to protect the public health and safety of guests, crew and the communities where cruise ships call. Recommendations include testing, the use of face coverings, and enhanced sanitation procedures on ships and in terminals.

The CDC has published a framework for return to cruising and the cruise lines worked together with them to finalize the actual requirements to be implemented.

Technology

Existing and new technological innovations augment health and safety.  Guests will complete health questionnaires and other documents in advance of arrival at the pier making it possible to expedite the embarkation process while maintaining social distancing.  The latest medical testing methods will screen for illness prior to embarkation and during the cruise.  The intent is for passengers to embark healthy and disembark healthy as well.  For the majority of cruises, there is a requirement that passengers, that are eligible, be fully vaccinated.

On board the ship, technology will make it possible for planning which dining venues and entertainment options guests which to choose (based on current availability).  Need to find someone on the ship? An app or other device will give you their location.  These are just a few of the ways technology will play a part.

Travel Advisors

Throughout the cruising shutdown, we have kept in contact with our cruise line partners and helped our guests navigate the waters of cancellations, refunds, future cruise credits, and rebooking options.  The situation has been very fluid, sometimes with things changing daily.   The cruise lines listened to our feedback and made adjustments as needed.

As we return to cruising, we will continue to be your core source of the latest information, provided to us by our travel partners.  We will be spending an entire week in conference with all the top cruise and land providers, learning about how they intend to keep passengers, crew, and the public safe and healthy.  Watch for posts live from Celebrity Apex staring November 13th.

This is not the time for you to try to navigate these waters on your own.  Helping our guests make the best decisions for their situation is why we are in this profession.    Cruising is already the best vacation value, but it will be even greater when you combine that with our experience and guidance, along with exclusive offers that we have been given, in recognition of our importance to the resumption of travel.

Looking to the Future ...

There's much more to the story, so be sure to follow us for our continuing posts on this and other important industry topics.
