Achilleion Palace Corfu

Achilleion Palace Corfu, Greece
In Greek mythology, Achilles was a Greek hero of the Trojan War, the central character and the greatest warrior of Homer's Iliad.

Achilleion Palace
Corfu, Greece

Achilleion Palace was built in 1889-1891 for Princess Elisabeth von Witelsbach of Austria, and paid homage to Greek mythology. Upon her death, Kaiser Wilhelm II made the palace his summer home until WWII.

Departing by motorcoach from the port of Corfu, we embarked on a scenic 30-minute drive to the Achilleion Palace. En route, we passed through olive, lemon and orange groves interspersed with cypress trees, and the Old Fortress that stands guard over the harbor and Corfu.

In this photo: Achilles as guardian of the palace in the gardens of the Achilleion. He gazes northward, toward the city. The inscription in Greek reads: ΑΧΙΛΛΕΥΣ i.e. Achilles. It was commissioned by Kaiser Wilhelm II.

statues of Achilles
As we approached the palace we were awestruck by the architecture of the building and the formal Italian garden with its trees and statuary.

Here statues of Achilles, both in the main hall and in the lavish gardens depicting the heroic and tragic scenes of the Trojan war can be seen. The architectural style is Pompeian and has many parallels to that of the Russian imperial residence in Crimea

The Triumph of Achilles by Franz Matsch
Entering the palace murals, statues, and other artifacts abound, but none are more impressive than the primary mural seen here.

The Triumph of Achilles by Franz Matsch

Achilles is seen dragging Hector's lifeless body in front of the Gates of Troy. (From a panoramic fresco on the upper level of the main hall.

Achilleion Palace was featured in the James Bond classic, "For Your Eyes Only".

These few images are just the beginning of what you will see during your visit to Achilleion Palace in Corfu.  We have posted several more images for you enjoyment on our Facebook Fan Page:  Achilleion Palace

Engine Fire on Hurtigruten MS Nordlys

MS Nordlys is now at the pier in Ålesund.

 Engine Room Fire
Kills 2 Crew Members

UPDATE: September 19, 2011

Sailings through Mid-October Cancelled
Passengers from MS Nordlys are awaiting flights home in  Ålesund on Monday, September 19th, following an engine fire onboard the vessel last Thursday.  Approximately 75 guests will be departing during the day.   Hurtigruten will forward belongings back to their homes if they haven't received them by the time they leave.  They have a support staff onsite providing assistance to the passengers.

Tragically, two crew members died in the incident and two remain hospitalized.  All passengers were safely evacuated.

Hurtigruten officials published the following statement on their website: "Hurtigruten wish to thank deeply all involved for their impressive contribution during the last days. Guests for their great patience and understanding, crew members and rescue workers for their professionalism and courage during the rescue operation."

More information: MS Nordlys update

An engine room fire aboard Hurtigruten MS Nordlys, around 9 AM Thursday, caused the death of two crew members and at least 9 others were injured.  According to Norwegian news Web site NRK, the 11,204-ton ship was just outside Ålesund in Norway's northwest when fire broke out in the engine room. The cause of the fire is under investigation.  There were 207 passengers and 55 crew onboard at the time.

In this dramatic video  below we see black smoke billowing from the smokestack while the emergency alarm sounds and passengers and crew gather on deck, prepared to evacuate.

Passengers were accommodated at the Rica Park Hotel before continuing on alternate cruises or returning home.  A hotline for passenger information is posted on Hurtigruten's website.  News reports indicated that the ship had been listing as much as 21.7 degrees at one point until pumps could be used to right the vessel.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to the families of the crew members that were injured or killed in this fire.

MS Nordlys sails the 12-DAY NORWEGIAN COASTAL VOYAGE from Bergen year round.

World Trade Center
10 Years Later ...

On the tenth anniversary of 9/11 attacks of the World Trade Center, The Pentagon, and the thwarted attack that ended in a field in Pennsylvania, America once again saw images from that terrible day as they watched the television specials, viewed images and videos online, or attended ceremonies across the country.

We too watched once again.  In some cases, we had not seen the footage before since we had been in Paris on a cruise at the time of the attacks.   We didn't see the events live in 2001, but did watch CNN when we returned to the ship.  The majority of passengers with us were from New York since the Trans-Atlantic cruise we were on was scheduled to return to New York.

These images are from an album, Visiting Ground Zero, which we have posted on our Facebook Fan page from a visit to New York prior to a cruise to Bermuda in 2008.

They are part of a tribute "FDNY Memorial Wall" at the  Ladder Company 10 fire station which is just across from where the World Trade Center once stood.   These firefighters were among the first responders that day.

We can only imagine what thoughts went through their minds as they looked up at the World Trade Center towers which were ablaze.   Debris was falling all around them as they headed inside the building to attempt to extinguish the blaze and save the lives of people trapped in the towers.

There were several events this past week to honor the 343 FDNY members killed on Sept. 11, 2001, as well as the 57 who have died in the past decade due to World Trade Center-related illnesses.  For more information on these events, see The Official Fire Department, City of New York website.

Our sympathy goes to the families of the fallen FDNY members.

We suggest adding a pre-cruise stay in New York should your plans find you departing from one of the New York ports.  It is easy to get around New York by public transportation.   If you have not been to Ground Zero before, we suggest you consider that in your plans.

10 Years Later: Remembering our 9/11 Cruise Experience

We Remember 9/11

 10 Years Later
Where Were You
Source:  Irish Mirror front page September 13, 2001
On the occasion of an anniversary, as with many significant historical events, it is normal to reflect on that day and recall where you were at the time.  9/11 is a day that will go down in infamy just like Pearl Harbor, the Assassination of John F. Kennedy, the Challenger Crash, and many others.

Leading up to 9/11/2001

We departed the United States for Europe on Saturday, September 8, 2001, for a pre-cruise stay in London, England.   We spent two nights at the Thistle Marble Arch Hotel and got around the city by walking and taking The Tube.  Highlights of our London visit included the Changing of the Guard Ceremony at Buckingham Palace, Trafalgar Square London Eye, Houses of Parliament, London Aquarium, and Westminster Abbey.

We enjoyed our visit to London but were anticipating an even better experience, as we headed for Southampton, England to board the Norwegian Sun.  The Sun was setting sail September 10th on its maiden voyage.  The Trans-Atlantic voyage was titled "The Path of the Vikings".

We would be visiting several ports of call: LeHavre, France (Paris), Cobb, Ireland, Glascow, Scotland (Greenock), Reykjavik, Iceland, St. John's Newfoundland, and Halifax, Nova Scotia.   This Trans-Atlantic crossing was scheduled to return to New York on September 26th.   Little did we know that our final port of call would be changed to Boston, MA due to the closure of New York harbor following the terrorist attacks.

Our first night onboard Norwegian Sun was enjoyable.   The Sun was the first Norwegian Cruise Line ship exclusively built for Freestyle Dining.   The first night was disorganized, but we met a couple from New York while waiting in line for dinner, and hit it off.   We had dinner with them for the remainder of the cruise.

Tuesday 9/11/2001 - Dateline Paris

We arrived in LeHavre, France as scheduled on September 11th, where we boarded a bus for the long journey to Paris, France.   This was our 25th Wedding Anniversary, and what could be more romantic than being in Paris.  This was the primary reason for the selection of this particular cruise.

France - Statue of Liberty
We booked the 11 hour PARIS HIGHLIGHTS AND RIVER SEINE CRUISE tour that brought us to the City of Lights. Our guide pointed out sights along the way. While it is impossible to see all of Paris in one day, this tour gave us a chance to see its most famous attractions.

We saw the Arc de Triomphe Champs Elysees, Place de la Concorde, Eiffel Tower, and the Cathedral de Notre Dame.  We boarded a bateaux mouche-style riverboat and enjoyed lunch as we glided down the River Seine and saw the historic attractions of this treasure-filled city from a whole new perspective.  While we passed this replica of the Statue of Liberty in Paris, the terror was starting to unfold back in New York.

Learning of the World Trade Center Attacks

Following lunch we had some free time to shop in Paris.  We headed back to our bus for the return trip to LeHavre.   The French bus driver was making a diving motion with his hands as we boarded the bus.   Most of the passengers didn't understand what he was trying to convey.

There were a few people that had heard bits and pieces of the news while they were in one of the stores.   The driver had a French news station on the radio which is where he had learned about the attacks.   Someone got him to keep switching the radio stations until he found one broadcasting in English.   That's when a pall fell over the entire bus, as we listened in horror to the events that had just begun unfolding back home.

Recall that our cruise's final destination was scheduled to be New York.   We don't know the exact numbers, but we'd say that at least 90% of the passengers were from the New York area.  Imagine the horror of being so far from home, unable to contact your friends and family to see if they were safe.

Back On Board Norwegian Sun

Even as we write this page, ten years after the attacks, we still feel sad about the events of that day. What was a day that we had long looked forward to, is now a day that we wish we could forget. Our tour guide comforted us on the long ride back to the ship. She was the first of many that would be consoling us as the rest of the cruise continued.

United we Stand
Back on board, we watched CNN, had dinner, and got in line to make a phone call back home. We did go to the casino that night, trying to put everything out of our minds, but our heart wasn't in it.

The captain and crew of Norwegian Sun will always be remembered.  They were among the many heroes that day.  No, they weren't rescuing people trapped in the rubble, or putting their lives at risk, but they served a critical need for so many people, from New York and elsewhere, that were far away from home feeling a sense of helplessness.

Unique Perspective

Another thing that will live with us forever is the way that the people of many nations greeted us during the remainder of our cruise.  There had been much anticipation in those port cities surrounding the arrival of the Norwegian Sun, on the occasion of its maiden call to the ports.   Some ceremonies proceeded as planned, but most were subdued from the original gala celebrations that had been anticipated.  Greetings were first expressions of sorrow and support and then welcome to the cities.  Flags were lowered in respect for the dead and injured.  Newspapers were filled with the gripping pictures.

We have posted a photo album  9/11 Reflections From Our Vantage Point that capture some of what we've expressed here in images.
