Where is Chris - National Pink Day

Today is National Pink Day. Some may say that pink is for girls and blue is for boys, but both the history of the color pink and how it is perceived today are much more complex and varied than that. Pink, which is celebrated today, is a pale color that falls somewhere between red and bluish-red.

The first thing that came to mind when searching for a destination today is this famous pink Cadillac.
Where is Chris?

Have the kids see how many pink items they can think of?  #KeepTheKidsEngaged

Argentine Precious Stone

Rhodochrosite

Rhodochrosite is a manganese carbonate mineral with chemical composition MnCO3. In its (rare) pure form, it is typically a rose-red color, but impure specimens can be shades of pink to pale brown. Rhodochrosite is Argentina's "national gemstone".

Famed for its banding, ranging from light pink to bright red, Argentinian Rhodochrosite is a truly unique gemstone. In ideal specimens of this stone, the banding crosses the surface of the stone in a zigzag pattern, with a sharp contrast between colors.

Inca Rose
Throughout our trip in South America we saw several merchants selling the local semi-precious gem.  These images were taken at Buenos Aires International Airport while waiting for our return flight.

As you can see the gem can be carved into many shapes, including my favorite (you guessed it) - Penguin.

As with any gem, expect to pay a premium based on the quality of the stone used for the setting.   A decent grade stone used in an earring will cost around $125 US at most jewelers.  If you are looking for something special for yourself or a gift, you'll want to check these gems out during your visit.

Drive Down Memory Lane

Elvis Loved Cars
Visit Automobile Museum

This week, #FriFotos theme is #CARS and the first thing that came to mind when we started going through our picture archives was our visit to Graceland in Memphis, TN.   As part of the VIP or Platinum tour packages, you have the opportunity to stroll down a tree-lined street with several of Elvis Presley's favorite vehicles on display.

(For those that don't know:  #FriFotos is a weekly photo forum by . Theme is revealed every Tuesday 12pm ET.)    Recently, @spencerspellman joined the team as a permanent co-host.  We even had the chance to co-host one week last year.)

Famous Pink Cadillac

This year marks Elvis Presley's 80th Birthday.   If you missed his birthday celebration on January 8th, you can relive it by visiting the official Graceland website or better yet, plan a visit to Memphis.

Perhaps the most famous of Elvis' cars was the 1955 Cadillac Fleetwood.  It was painted pink and first used by him for touring.  He later gave the car to his mom, Gladys.

More than 20 Vehicles

There are several cars and other toys on display in the museum.   Some of the other popular cars include 1960 & 1966 Rolls Royce Silver Cloud, a 1975 Ferrari Dino, Harley-Davidson Electra-Glide Motorcycle, and 1973 Stutz Blackhawk to name a few.

When you visit Graceland, plan to spend the entire day there or longer so that you can see all the exhibits at your leisure.

Queen Victoria Pretty in Pink

QUEEN VICTORIA in SYDNEY

Cunard Line's Queen Victoria, illuminated in pink while berthed at Sydney’s Circular Quay, made history today. Queen Victoria was bathed in vibrant pink light from dusk to support Australia’s National Breast Cancer Foundation (NBCF), which officially launched its 2010 fundraising target of $17 million at an event onboard. Pink lights illuminated the entire ship, providing the ideal setting for the event.

Why Pink?

“Pink has become synonymous with the fight against breast cancer, so we are delighted to offer NBCF the opportunity to boost awareness of research and claim a world first by being the first to illuminate a liner in pink,” said Peter Shanks, president of Cunard Line.

It is not surprising that Cunard Line was a part of this NBCF kickoff event. Parent company, Carnival Corporation, has been a long-time supporter of Breast Cancer fund-raising. Their On Deck for the Cure program benefits the Susan G. Komen for the Cure foundation.

Additional history making events are planned for Queen Victoria. Early next year she sails her first "Americas" season, traversing the Panama Canal on more than one voyage, making rare roundtrip sailings from Los Angeles to Hawaii, plus debuting her maiden Mexico Getaway voyage.
