Remembering 9-11 Twenty Years Later

President Proclaims Patriot Day, Day of Remembrance  

By a joint resolution approved December 18, 2001 (Public Law 107-89), the Congress has designated September 11 of each year as “Patriot Day,” and by Public Law 111-13, approved April 21, 2009, the Congress has requested the observance of September 11 as an annually recognized “National Day of Service and Remembrance”. President Biden officially proclaimed September 11, 2021, as Patriot Day.

In his remarks, the President said "Twenty years ago, the United States endured one of the most unconscionable tragedies in our country’s history. The cowardly terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center, the Pentagon, and onboard United Flight 93 cut short the lives of 2,977 innocent people. These attacks tore a hole in the heart of our Nation, and the pain of this tragedy still remains. Each year on this somber date, we remember the horror and bravery shown that day, just as we remember how we came together, united in grief and in purpose. Each year, we renew our solemn vow to never forget what happened on September 11, 2001, or those who lost their lives. 

 On Patriot Day and National Day of Service and Remembrance, we honor every life that was taken too soon. We honor the first responders — firefighters, law enforcement officers, emergency workers, and service members — who answered the call of duty, and the brave civilians who rushed into action to save lives that day. Their courage embodies the American spirit and resilience, and their heroism continues to inspire new generations of Americans. ”

During our pre-conference stay in New York in 2013, we decided to revisit the site of the World Trade Center.  The site was quite different from the last time we were there.   Rebuilding of the towers was moving along nicely.  The 9/11 Memorial fountains had been completed.  Click on the link above to view the album.

Remembering 9/11/2001

As President Biden said, we vividly remember where we were on 9/11.  Each year we recall where we were when learning about the terrorist attacks.   We were on the inaugural voyage of Norwegian Sun, thousands of miles from home in Paris, France.   Our tour bus was filled with our fellow passengers, the majority of whom lived in New York.  The transatlantic cruise, we were on, was originally scheduled to conclude in New York but ended in Boston instead.

What was to have been a celebration of our 25th Anniversary, quickly became a very unique experience as we observed the hospitality and caring from so many people across the globe as our journey home continued.  Today as we celebrate our 45th Anniversary, we once again reflect on the moment we learned about the events unfolding thousands of miles away from where we were.

A World United

As we watched the twentieth anniversary remembrances we couldn't help but reflect on how the world was united right after the attacks twenty years ago.   Patriotism was at an all time high.   We had first-hand experiences  of sympathy and concern in every port of call we visited.    We met people who had taken strangers into their homes when planes were grounded.  The entire world was united.

Twenty years later, the world is facing a different crisis and we need to remember 9/11 and once again stand together in a common cause to defeat a different enemy.  This time it's a virus which is attacking our very way of life.   Once again, the first responders are on the front lines.   Let's not forget the heroes from 20 years ago and let us honor their memory by working together so that our current first responders don't have to be remembered for their sacrifices.

Heroes sprang into action in the face of great peril to help save their fellow Americans. Many laid down their lives. As we reflect on the events of that September morning, let us recommit to embrace the stalwart bravery displayed and reaffirm our dedication to defending liberty from all who wish to deny it. ”

Oceania Cruises announced that the debut of its next ship, the 1,250-passenger Riviera, has been delayed due to recent strikes at the Fincantieri shipyard near Genoa, Italy where it is being built.  It is a sister ship to Marina which debuted last year.  It was also built by the same shipyard.

Delay Cancels Two Cruises

The maiden voyage of the 66,000-ton vessel has been pushed back to May 16 from April 2, 2012. Two cruises scheduled to take place between April 24 and May 16 are being canceled.

"We sincerely regret any inconvenience that this may cause our guests," Oceania President Kunal Kamlani says in a statement accompanying the announcement. "We are working very closely with the shipyard to ensure Riviera is completed to meet Oceania's high standards of quality and service."

Second Delay for Debut

This is the second announced delay, within the last six months, to the maiden voyage of the Riviera. The line announced in August that the ship's debut was being pushed back from April 14 to April 24.  Delays to maiden voyages, while rare, can happen for a number of reasons.  In this case, a strike over reorganization planned at the shipyard due to a slowdown in newbuild orders, lasted longer than expected.


Oceania says customers on the canceled cruises will be contacted by the line or their travel agents to discuss alternative cruise dates. Those who choose to rebook onto a later voyage will receive a credit ranging from $250 to $1,000 per person, depending on category of accommodation. Those who do not wish to rebook will receive a full refund.

The new maiden voyage is a 10-day ‘Pearls of the Aegean’ cruise that includes an overnight aboard ship in Venice before departing for Dubrovnik, Kotor, Corfu, Monemvasia, Crete, Santorini, Delos, Mykonos and Athens.

On the occasion of an anniversary, as with many significant historical events, it is normal to reflect on that day and recall where you were at the time.  9/11 is a day that will go down in infamy just like Pearl Harbor, the Assassination of John F. Kennedy, the Challenger Crash, and many others.

Leading up to 9/11/2001

We departed the United States for Europe on Saturday, September 8, 2001, for a pre-cruise stay in London, England.   We spent two nights at the Thistle Marble Arch Hotel and got around the city by walking and taking The Tube.  Highlights of our London visit included the Changing of the Guard Ceremony at Buckingham Palace, Trafalgar Square,  London Eye, Houses of Parliament, London Aquarium, and Westminster Abbey.

We enjoyed our visit to London but were anticipating an even better experience, as we headed for Southampton, England to board the Norwegian Sun.  The Sun was setting sail September 10th on its maiden voyage.  The Trans-Atlantic voyage was titled "The Path of the Vikings".

We would be visiting several ports of call: LeHavre, France (Paris), Cobb, Ireland, Glascow, Scotland (Greenock), Reykjavik, Iceland, St. John's Newfoundland, and Halifax, Nova Scotia.   This Trans-Atlantic crossing was scheduled to return to New York on September 26th.   Little did we know that our final port of call would be changed to Boston, MA due to the closure of New York harbor following the terrorist attacks.

Our first night onboard Norwegian Sun was enjoyable.   The Sun was the first Norwegian Cruise Line ship exclusively built for Freestyle Dining.   The first night was disorganized, but we met a couple from New York while waiting in line for dinner, and hit it off.   We had dinner with them for the remainder of the cruise.

Tuesday 9/11/2001 - Dateline Paris

We arrived in LeHavre, France as scheduled on September 11th, where we boarded a bus for the long journey to Paris, France.   This was our 25th Wedding Anniversary, and what could be more romantic than being in Paris.  This was the primary reason for the selection of this particular cruise.

We booked the 11 hour PARIS HIGHLIGHTS AND RIVER SEINE CRUISE tour that brought us to the City of Lights. Our guide pointed out sights along the way. While it is impossible to see all of Paris in one day, this tour gave us a chance to see its most famous attractions.

We saw the Arc de Triomphe,  Champs Elysees, Place de la Concorde, Eiffel Tower, and the Cathedral de Notre Dame.  We boarded a bateaux mouche-style riverboat and enjoyed lunch as we glided down the River Seine and saw the historic attractions of this treasure-filled city from a whole new perspective.  While we passed this replica of the Statue of Liberty in Paris, the terror was starting to unfold back in New York.

Learning of the World Trade Center Attacks


Following lunch we had some free time to shop in Paris.  We headed back to our bus for the return trip to LeHavre.   The French bus driver was making a diving motion with his hands as we boarded the bus.   Most of the passengers didn't understand what he was trying to convey.

There were a few people that had heard bits and pieces of the news while they were in one of the stores.   The driver had a French news station on the radio which is where he had learned about the attacks.   Someone got him to keep switching the radio stations until he found one broadcasting in English.   That's when a pall fell over the entire bus, as we listened in horror to the events that had just begun unfolding back home.

Recall that our cruise's final destination was scheduled to be New York.   We don't know the exact numbers, but we'd say that at least 90% of the passengers were from the New York area.  Imagine the horror of being so far from home, unable to contact your friends and family to see if they were safe.


Back On Board Norwegian Sun

Even as we write this page, ten years after the attacks, we still feel sad about the events of that day. What was a day that we had long looked forward to, is now a day that we wish we could forget. Our tour guide comforted us on the long ride back to the ship. She was the first of many that would be consoling us as the rest of the cruise continued.

Back on board, we watched CNN, had dinner, and got in line to make a phone call back home. We did go to the casino that night, trying to put everything out of our minds, but our heart wasn't in it.

The captain and crew of Norwegian Sun will always be remembered.  They were among the many heroes that day.  No, they weren't rescuing people trapped in the rubble, or putting their lives at risk, but they served a critical need for so many people, from New York and elsewhere, that were far away from home feeling a sense of helplessness.

Unique Perspective

Another thing that will live with us forever is the way that the people of many nations greeted us during the remainder of our cruise.  There had been much anticipation in those port cities surrounding the arrival of the Norwegian Sun, on the occasion of its maiden call to the ports.   Some ceremonies proceeded as planned, but most were subdued from the original gala celebrations that had been anticipated.  Greetings were first expressions of sorrow and support and then welcome to the cities.  Flags were lowered in respect for the dead and injured.  Newspapers were filled with the gripping pictures.

Oceania Riviera, the latest ship to be commissioned by Oceania Cruises, is currently under construction by Fincantieri Shipyard in Genoa, Italy.

Last month, Riviera completed a successful float from the construction dock to the fitting-out pier that will be Riviera's home for the next nine months.  Thousands of craftsman now begin fitting out and finishing her magnificent, designer interiors so that she can join her sister ship, Marina, in European waters.


Maiden Voyage Date Changed

Oceania Cruises announced the rescheduling of the maiden voyage of the Riviera.   The 1,250-passenger ship is now scheduled to sail on April 24, 2012, 10 days later than originally planned. According to Oceania Cruises, the delay will “allow additional time for the staff to familiarize themselves with the ship’s facilities and fine-tune the countless details required to deliver the acclaimed Oceania Cruises experience.”

The Riviera's inaugural voyage will be a 12-day Ancient Grandeur cruise from Athens, with calls at Alexandria and Port Said, Egypt; Haifa and Jerusalem, Israel; Alanya, Rhodes and Patmos, Greece; Kusadasi, Turkey; and an overnight stay in Istanbul.

Since the maiden voyage is now 10 days later and 2 days longer, Oceania Cruises is allowing guests to modify their plans if they desire.  Guests have the following options:

• Keep reservation -  receive 2 bonus days at no extra cost & $250 per guest in shipboard credit
• Book a different voyage - receive $250 per guest toward a future cruise
• Cancel cruise - receive a full refund

Fourth in a Series

Celebrity Silhouette^SM joins her sisters, Celebrity Solstice, Celebrity Equinox, and Celebrity Eclipse as another success story for shipbuilder MEYER WERFT.

The new122,000 gross ton Celebrity Silhouette^SM was delivered on schedule to Celebrity Cruises (Miami, USA) in the Dutch port of Eemshaven.  The shipyard in Papenburg, should be quite proud of this accomplishment.

Celebrity Silhouette^SM is the fourth ship out of a series of five cruise ships the shipyard in Papenburg is building for Celebrity Cruises. The series began with the delivery of Celebrity Solstice in October, 2008.  The second ship, Celebrity Equinox, was delivered in July, 2009 followed by the Celebrity Eclipse in April, 2010.  Meyer Werft has been building ships for Celebrity Cruises since 1995.

The Solstice® Class ships have a total length of 315 meters, which is almost three times as long as a soccer ground, making them the biggest ships built to date for Celebrity Cruises. 

MEYER WERFT and Celebrity Cruises have developed and built another extremely eco-friendly ship. Highly energy-efficient  systems, a solar power system, optimised hydrodynamics, a very efficient underwater hull coating and an energy-saving lighting system using LEDs cut back the ship's energy demand considerably.

The Celebrity Silhouette can accommodate 2,886 passengers, who are taken care of by a crew of 1,271. Following her naming ceremony in Hamburg on 21 July 2011, she began her maiden voyage to Barcelona via Civitavecchia/Rome on 23 July 2011.

The Magic and Fun Begins Today in Venice

Venice, Italy was the sight of today's naming ceremony for the 100th vessel in the Carnival Corporation's fleet. The brand new Carnival Magic, sister ship to Carnival Dream, was christened today in accordance with maritime tradition.  This latest "Fun Ship" is 130,000 tons of fun.

Naming a godmother is a shipbuilding tradition that dates back to ancient times, and helps bring the ship good fortune. Someone who knows a thing or two about good fortune is Lindsey Wilkerson, a childhood cancer survivor who was treated at St. Jude, and now grown up, is a spokesperson and employee, helping the hospital in its mission to end childhood cancer. Carnival is a partner with St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital and thought it was fitting to have Lindsey be the godmother of Carnival Magic.

Carnival Magic - Now Sailing in Europe on its Maiden Voyage

Fireworks filled the pre-dawn sky over Port Canaveral January 4th as the latest Disney Cruise Line ship, Disney Dream, pulled into its new home in Florida.   The Disney Dream completed its Transatlantic crossing on schedule.  Special thanks to DIS Unplugged for capturing this event in pictures and video (click the link for more images).

When You Wish Upon a Star ....



Disney Dream's naming ceremony will be held January 19th in Port Canaveral with its maiden voyage occurring on January 26th.  As customary for new ships, there will be a series of short cruises for cast members, travel agents, and media between now and the maiden voyage.

The most innovative new features on the Disney Dream are the AquaDuck, the first water coaster at sea, and the virtual portholes for inside cabins which provide a live view via some Disney magic.

The Disney Dream is scheduled to sail three-, four- and five-night cruises to the Bahamas, from Port Canaveral.  Sister ship Disney Fantasy is currently in production at the MEYER WERFT shipyard and is scheduled to set sail on its maiden voyage on April 7, 2012.  It will sail seven-night alternating eastern and western Caribbean itineraries, also from Port Canaveral.

Always an important time for any oceangoing ship, a first transoceanic voyage announces the new vessel’s presence to the world. Silver Spirit makes this sailing during a 16-day “Maiden Crossing” from Lisbon to Fort Lauderdale.

Silversea Cruises Silver Spirit was delivered by Fincantieri shipbuilders on December 16, 2009. The 36,000 gross ton ship has 270 cabins making it the largest ship in Silversea's fleet. At the delivery, President Amerigo Perasso indicated that they hold an option for an additional sister ship to the Silver Spirit. We will keep an eye on this and let you know if that plan becomes a reality.

Highlights on the ship include six restaurants, including two that charge a fee, along with an Art Deco décor with lots of burgundy and dark woods. The ship’s official inaugural cruise departed December 23rd from Barcelona to Lisbon.

January 21, 2010 will be the next milestone date for the Silver Spirit as it will be christened in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, and depart on its 91-day “Grand Inaugural Voyage” to 45 ports in 20 nations including Brazil, Chile, Peru, Ecuador, Guatemala, Costa Rica and Mexico.

May We Never Forget

September 11, 2001 is a day that we will never forget. It was our 25th wedding anniversary. We were on Norwegian Sun's maiden voyage which started the day before in Southampton, England for a Path of the Vikings Transatlantic voyage. The Sun was docked in Le Harve, France and we had taken a shore excursion to Paris. What could be more romantic than spending your anniversary in Paris, France?

We had a lovely lunch on a river cruise. We had done some shopping and toured the sites of Paris. It was now time to board our motor coach for the trip back to Le Harve to rejoin our vessel. While in one of the local shops, we'd heard some buzzing as the news of the days events had started to trickle in.

One of the passengers asked our French-speaking bus driver to turn on the radio. What happened next, I'll never forget. He started to make dive-bombing motions with his hands, trying to tell us about a plane crash. Even though we couldn't understand his speach, we started to understand that something tragic had taken place.

He changed the radio station and found one that was broadcasting in English. A pall fell over the bus as we heard the news. Most of the passengers were from the New York area since the cruise was to end in New York.

Back onboard the Sun, security was tightened and CNN was on all television sets throughout the ship. The mood went from festive (celebrating the new ship) to very somber.

The captain was one of the best we've had. He directed the staff to open the phone lines and internet for 48 hours so that every passenger could call home to check on loved ones. It was a very organized process that was implemented without any prior planning. Later in the week we learned that our disembarkation port was changed from New York to Boston and once again everyone was allowed to call home to inform family and friends of the change.

There were festivities planned for all our ports of call. In most cases, those still took place, but the opening remarks were concerning the attack. Every country we visited had their flags at half-staff in memory. All of the tour guides began their introductions by expressing condolences.

We had ports of call in New Foundland and Halifax, Canada. There we met folks that had taken stranded air passengers into their homes and fed them when the planes were grounded. Clearly the world had united in response to the events of 9/11.

Eight years have passed since that terrible day, but the memories are fresh as yesterday. We sailed out of New York on a couple recent cruises. We visited the site of the World Trade Center and saw the rebuilding and the various memorials. Reflecting on the past with a hope for a new rebuilding is perhaps the best way to remember.

When we pulled into Boston harbor at the conclusion of our maiden voyage, we were greeted by U.S. Coast Guard gun boats which escorted us safely into the harbor. It was good to be home but it was strange to have the military presence. The escorts continue to this day as the cruise lines and the government attempt to keep us safe from harm. It is everyone's duty to be watchful so that the events of 9/11 don't occur again.

Each of our cruises are memorable in some way. It seems that some cruises are remembered more than others. The maiden voyage of Norwegian Sun will remain one with very vivid memories.

Construction of Queen Elizabeth Begins

Queen Elizabeth's Keel Laid

A ceremony was held today, at the Monfalcone shipyard of Fincantieri near Trieste, Italy, to mark the keel laying of Cunard Line’s new Queen Elizabeth. The second largest Cunarder ever built, Queen Elizabeth’s keel is the third Cunard has lain in the space of seven years. When she enters service in October 2010, she will join Queen Mary 2 and Queen Victoria as not only the most famous ocean liners in the world but also the youngest fleet in passenger travel.

The keel laying involves the placement in the dry dock of the first section of the ship’s hull. This section is made up of six pre-manufactured blocks, weighs 364 tons and is fitted with 104 tons of pipes, cables, insulation and other equipment. Fifty-three sections will be used in the construction of Queen Elizabeth and she will take to the water for the first time at her float out in December.

The new ship is named after the first Queen Elizabeth, one of Cunard’s greatest ships. The exterior design will be like her sister ships with the distinctive black and red design. The interior of the ship will consist of elegant double and triple height public rooms on a grand scale, luxuriously endowed with rich wood panelling, intricate mosaics, gleaming chandeliers and cool marbles. Art Deco features will pay homage to the original Queen Elizabeth and will allow the new ship to reflect a more civilized era of travel.

Queen Elizabeth's maiden voyage will be October 12, 2010. That voyage sold out in just over 29 minutes back in April this year. Her Maiden Season will run from October 2010 to January 2011 and include voyages to the Western and Central Mediterranean and the Caribbean. Fares start from just $1,195 per person for the five-night 26 November 2010 Gallic Debut voyage with ports of call at Amsterdam, Zeebrugge and Le Havre; while the 13-night Iberian Discovery voyage departing 1 December 2010 features fares from $2,395 per person, with ports of call at Vigo, Lisbon, Seville, Gran Canaria, Tenerife, La Palma and Madeira.

Celebrity Equinox Sails Early

Celebrity Equinox to Soft-Launch in Norwegian Fjords

Celebrity Cruises announced this week that the construction of Celebrity Equinox is ahead of schedule and a Soft-Launch in the Norwegian Fjords is being added to the 2009 cruise schedule.

The Equinox is a sister ship of Celebrity Solstice which debuted last November. Since that time it has received rave reviews from everyone that has had the good fortune of sailing on her (including yours truly).

You may recall that there was some controversy last year when pre-inaugural cruises were added to the cruise schedule. Passengers that were booked on the maiden voyage felt like they were cheated from being the first to set sail on the Solstice. This time, Celebrity Cruises is extending a special offer to passengers that are already booked on the ship's maiden voyage of August 8. Celebrity has invited them to combine their 10-night “Best of Europe” cruise with the 8-night soft launch, for a spectacular 18-night voyage on the new ship. Celebrity is offering those guests an onboard credit of $200 per stateroom or $300 per suite if they add the 8-night cruise to their reservation.

The 8-night cruise through the Norwegian Fjords features visits to Stavanger, Flam, Geiranger, and Oslo, Norway. The 10-night maiden voyage, which will include an inaugural gift and commemorative activities, will visit Paris/Normandy (via Le Havre) and Cherbourg, France; Vigo, Cartagena and Barcelona, Spain; Lisbon, Portugal, and Gibraltar, UK, ending in Rome (via Civitavecchia), Italy.

We had the good fortune of sailing on the Solstice last year and enjoyed the half-acre Lawn Club with real grass, The Corning Museum of Glass glassblowing show, the various new dining venues, entertainment, and the modern decor of the ship. We have also had the good fortune of sailing through the Norwegian Fjords and the European ports that will be visited on this 18-night voyage.
