Donald Duck's Ocean Connection

Click here for more Donald Duck & Disney Art
Donald Takes to the High Seas

We are still celebrating National Oceans Month, so on this Donald Duck day we thought it would be fitting to find a connection between Donald and the seas.

While on Disney Dream a few years ago we captured images of some of the Disney art work that adorns the vessel.   Here is one of our favorite images of Donald Duck.  He's sliding down Disney Dream's Aqua Duck - but wait, he should be on a raft.  Oh no!!

If you've not been on a Disney ship before, and you love Disney art, you should put a Disney cruise on your bucket list.   It's like walking into a museum of Disney characters.  If you are so inclined, you can even purchase a piece of Disney to bring back home with you.

Donald Duck's Debut

Donald first appeared to us in a 1934 film called The Wise Little Hen, a retelling of the original little red hen story. Throughout Donald is repeatedly asked to help plant the corn, and harvest the corn, each time finding him claiming some form of ailment that prevents him from participating.

If you’ve seen this episode or read The Little Red Hen. Unlike that parable, The Wise Little Hen took a more direct approach to showing her displeasure. She told Donald she’d cure him of his ailment so he could eat the corn… and gave him castor oil.

While that was his first appearance, the angry rage filled Donald we came to know and love didn’t really show up until Orphan’s Benefit, and it was also then that his relationship with Mickey was formed. Since then he has gone on to appear in video games, episodes of cartoons, and stands out as the Disney character who has appeared in the most films to date, outstripping even Disney Mascot Mickey Mouse. Apparently, there’s something about a rage-filled duck we just can’t get enough of.

Donald Our Favorite Duck

Donald Duck - Main Street WDW

Happy 84th Birthday Donald
Happy Donald Duck Day

Donald Duck’s first appearance on screen was in the animated short film “The Wise Hen”, on June 9, 1934.

Although Donald’s birthday is said to be on March 13th in the 1949 short film “Donald’s Happy Birthday”, Disney later decided that Donald’s official birthday is June 9th, the day he first appeared in film. Thus, June 9th is Donald Duck Day.

The character Donald Duck came about after Walt Disney heard Clarence Nash reciting “Mary Had a Little Lamb” in his “duck” voice, and Nash went on to voice Donald until 1984. Tony Anselmo started voicing Donald in 1985, and is still Donald’s voice as of 2017. Donald’s full name is Donald Fauntleroy Duck, and he is known for his sometimes temperamental personality, and is many times associated with his nephews Huey, Louie, and Dewey, and his girlfriend Daisy.

You'll typically see Donald dressed in a sailor shirt with a flat cap, red bow-tie, and no pants! The statue on the right was captured at Walt Disney World theme park, Magic Kingdom.
He looks pretty good in bronze too, don't you think.

Donald Duck - Disney Dream Cruise Ship
Disney Art

If you are a fan of Disney, you won't want to miss the art collections onboard Disney Cruise Line ships.

This image of Donald Duck splashing his way through the Aqua Duck was seen onboard Disney Dream during one of our cruises. It might not be there any longer, since many of the art works are for sale. You can return from your vacation with one of your favorite characters.

Donald Takes to the Water

It makes sense that you'd see Donald Duck at sea.   The image on the left was seen onboad Disney Cruise Line ship Disney Dream.  Donald was among the characters greeting passengers during the welcome aboard show by the main pool area.

"It All Started With a Mouse" but this lovable duck has certainly captured the hearts of children of all ages since 1934.

You can immerse yourself in the wonderful world of Walt Disney at one of the theme parks, at the movie theater, or onboard one of Disney's ships. We can help you plan two of the three. Check out the links above to get an idea of how you could become a part of the magic.

The Art of Disney at Sea

Sharing the Magic
Through Art

Walt Disney was born in Chicago, my hometown, in 1901. He studied art and photography while attending McKinley High School.  After moving to Missouri, he began drawing and selling pictures to friends, family, and neighbors.

It All Started
With a Mouse

Mickey Mouse first appeared in Steamboat Willie (1928) and the rest is history.  Mickey has stood the test of time, and has been welcomed into the hearts and minds of many generations.  Through animation, Mickey and his fellow cast of characters, have come alive on film, and have been captured in many different artistic media since those early beginnings.

#FriFotos Theme - #ART

This week, Friday's photographic topic for the popular Twitter forum, #FriFotos, is #ART.  Participants share their personal photographs that express the announced theme.   As usual, the theme has broad interpretation, making for a very enjoyable day viewing each others entries.

Art At Sea

We kick off our entries with photographs of #ART which were taken onboard Disney Cruise Line's Disney Dream.  While this is a literal interpretation of the theme, we think you'll enjoy the various variations that can be seen onboard the ship.  Some of the artworks are permanent fixtures, while others are part of the Disney Art Collection which can be purchased.  Disney Dream - Art (album)

Donald Duck Day 2015

Donald Duck Day

Donald Duck Day commemorates the debut appearance of Donald Duck on June 9th 1934, when he was featured in the Silly Symphony cartoon The Wise Little Hen.

Today Donald Duck turns 81, but he never looks a day older.  Happy Birthday old fella - thanks for all the years of memories.

Disney cartoons have been a part of the lives of millions of childhoods and will continue to be for many a generations to come. Mickey, Minnie, Goofy, Pluto, Daisy and quick-tempered Donald make up the classic Disney gang.

You'll typically see Donald dressed in a sailor shirt with a flat cap, red bow-tie, and no pants! The statue on the right was captured at Walt Disney World theme park, Magic Kingdom.
He looks pretty good in bronze too, don't you think.

Unforgettable Nights at Sea

#FriFotos Theme = #NIGHT

Pirates in the Caribbean

This week #FriFotos theme is #NIGHT.  It is being repeated by popular demand.  When thinking about images that could represent the theme, the first thing that came to mind was our unforgettable night aboard Disney Dream for our National Conference a couple years ago when we were entertained by the Disney Cast and their Pirates in the Caribbean deck party.

The highlight of the event is when Disney lights up the sky with fireworks which can be seen from your balcony or on the open decks.
Due to technical difficulties caused by weather, it was actually postponed a day during our cruise, which made the anticipation even greater.

(For those that don't know:  #FriFotos is a weekly Twitter photo forum by . Theme is revealed every Tuesday 12pm ET.)    Recently, @spencerspellman joined the team as a permanent co-host.  We even had the chance to co-host one week late last year.)

Disney Dream Deck Party

All the guests gather on the open deck for a high-energy show as the highlight of Pirate in the Caribbean night.  If you want a different perspective of the show, why not include a ride on the AquaDuck which is awesome at night.

Yo Ho Yo Ho
a Pirate's Life for Me

So, don you pirate costumes and join the Disney Cast on deck for an unforgettable night of entertainment.  Disney was the first cruise line to bring fireworks on board their cruises; others have now followed suite.

We don't want to spoil all the fun of anticipation, but we have a few more images in our photo album: Disney Dream - Pirates in the Caribbean

Merry Christmas 2014

Merry Christmas

Holidays are about families, and what better example of a happy family then the characters of Walt Disney's imagination.

One highlight for us this year was a day exploring the Museum of Science & Industry's "Christmas Around the World & Holiday Lights" exhibit along with the "Treasures of Disney".

The holiday exhibit is an annual event at the museum while the Disney exhibit was a limited exhibit highlighting the life of Walt Disney.

It All Started With a Mouse

As the saying goes, Disney's success started with a mouse. Today Disney provides families with great value at the resorts and ships from coast to coast. We were fortunate to be able to sail on Disney Dream, one Disney's newest ships, during one of our recent national conferences.

There is something for everyone that loves Disney characters during a Disney land and sea vacation. Greet your favorite characters, get an autograph or a photo with them, have some Mickey Mouse pancakes or waffles for breakfast, zip around the ship on a raft in the Aqua Duct. Get welcomed aboard the ship by your cast of  Disney characters. Watch out for pirates during the Pirates in the Caribbean party.

Most importantly, spend some time together as a family enjoying all the entertainment that the Disney staff has in store for you from the time you arrive at the resort or board the ship.

We hope that your Christmas tree was filled with many special gifts this year.   Perhaps one of them contained a gift certificate for a cruise or resort stay at one of Disney parks or ships.

Even if you didn't have a Disney vacation wrapped up in a box under your tree, there's still plenty of opportunity for you to surprise your family in the New Year with a trip that they will remember for years to come.

Make some memories in 2015 with your family and friends.

Thank you for letting us be a part of your lives this holiday season and throughout the year.  We hope that you've enjoyed our gift of stories and photos from our cruise and land trips.

We would be happy to help you plan for your next vacation.

Thanksgiving Greetings from Grandeur

HAPPY
THANKSGIVING

It's hard to believe that Thanksgiving is here already. Where did 2012 go? As has become my tradition, I'd like to share with you some of the things that I'm thankful for and highlight some of our adventures this year.

We had Thanksgiving breakfast on the Grandeur of the Seas in Miami.  The past two months have been very busy for us with our National Conference, a Bahamas cruise on Carnival Sensation, a trip to Cancun to visit several AMResorts, and finally the Grandeur of the Seas event.  At the same time we were bringing you coverage of National Cruise Vacation Month and the Hurricane Season, including Rafael and Sandy. We are thankful to be able to share our new experiences with all of you.

Grandeur OTS Chops Grille
We hope that you, your family, and friends have plenty to be thankful for this holiday season. I know that I have plenty of things to be thankful for, including my health, family, and friends and the ability to share my love of cruising with all of you. I’m grateful that I've been able to explore new ships and destinations with family and friends again this year.

"Now Our Best Ship is Every Ship" - We were fortunate to be invited to the Revitalization Event which was hosted by Adam Goldstein, CEO of Royal Caribbean International, to unveil the changes that were just completed which will enhance guests experiences. One of the main highlights of that event was the Aerial Spectacular that is performed in the Centrum of the ship. The aerialists are suspended from 5 decks above the lobby.  This was the first time the show was performed inside the United States.  We have posted a few videos on our YouTube Channel and a few images on our Facebook Fan Page as well. Be sure to become a fan on our Facebook page so that you'll get updates on all of these trips.
