When the weather at home is cold and snowy, travelers take to the seas to get out of town and head to somewhere warm. Imagine the surprise to Cunard Line Queen Mary 2 passengers as they embarked their ship in New York on January 3rd and found the scene above. 

Queen Mary 2 arrived in New York ahead of schedule in order to avoid the worst part of the storm.  She didn't sail until after midnight to allow sufficient time for passengers to embark the vessel.  According to the line, the ship is still expected to arrive in Southampton, England on time January 10th.

Queen Mary 2 Continues to China

At the time of the massive earthquake in Japan yesterday, Cunard Line's Queen Mary 2 was en route from Osaka to Nagasaki, Japan.

QM2 arrived at Nagasaki this morning and the port authority advised that the port will remain closed while they ensure the port facilities are structurally sound.

QM2 remained outside the port area until 2pm local time when they embarked a small group of guests and immigration officials, who were on an overland tour. Cunard confirms that it has all guests and crew safely on board and are under sail to Beijing, China, where they will arrive on schedule.

Queen Mary 2 is currently on a 103-day journey round-trip from New York, bringing guests to renowned destinations around the globe in the grandest style imaginable. During the World Cruise, guests will explore exciting ports in South America, Africa, Australia, Asia, the Middle East and Europe.

This is the second major earthquake that QM2 has encountered during this World Cruise. QM2 was in Sydney, Australia for the Royal Rendezvous, when the earthquake in Christchurch, New Zealand occurred.

Cunard Line has successfully utilized social media, such as Facebook, to keep us all informed during this difficult time.   Due to Japanese laws, C band communications are not allowed in Japanese waters, this is why the bridge web cam had not been updated.

Cunard's Facebook message concludes with:

Tsunami waves reached Hawaii early today, following a massive 8.9 magnitude earthquake in Japan, that triggered tidal wave warnings as far away as Oregon as the giant wave makes its way to the West Coast of the United States.

Tsunami Warning Sirens awoke Hawaiian residents as the first waves were scheduled to arrive at 3 AM HST (9 AM EST). Residents were encouraged to seek higher ground.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center says Kauai was the first island hit early by the tsunami, which was quickly sweeping through the Hawaiian Island chain.

The cruise lines have turned to FB and other social media to quickly notify everyone of the ship, passenger, and crew status.  Summary Below

Azamara Quest was in Nagasaki, Japan at the time of the earthquake and resulting tsunami.  It was on the Northeast side of Japan, in a protected bay far away from danger.   The ship sailed  into deep waters about an hour after the earthquake and is in no danger.   The next scheduled port of call is Osaka, which is 38 hours sailing time from Nagasaki.   Royal Caribbean International will monitor the situation and adjust the itinerary as needed.

Our thoughts go out to all who are being affected by the devastating earthquake in Japan. While potential effects of the resulting waves are being closely monitored, we’d just like to note that no impact to Carnival ships are expected, including our three California-based vessels.

Hi everyone, just wanted to give you a final update for the evening regarding the Japan earthquake and again it is reassuring in relation to the widespread tsunami alert that followed the quake. All four P&O Cruises ships are sailing in deep water and as a result are quite safe. Pacific Pearl is on her way from Sydney to New Caledonia. Pacific Dawn returns to Brisbane tomorrow morning for a normal turnaround there. Pacific Sun is due to arrive in Noumea early tomorrow and just as an added precaution she will arrive three hours later than planned. Pacific Jewel is on the way from Suva to Port Denerau and her arrival there might also be delayed. As you know, our first priority is always the safety and security of our passengers and crew.

A tsunami is a series of long ocean waves. Each individual wave crest 
can last 5  to 15 minutes or more and extensively flood coastal areas. 
The danger can  continue for many hours after the initial wave as 
subsequent waves arrive.  As we've seen recently, these can be spawned 
by major earthquakes, such as the one in Japan.

January 13, 2011 three Cunard Queens will  rendezvous in front of the Statue of Liberty amidst the fanfare of a spectacular fireworks by Grucci show. In honour of the Cunard Royal Rendezvous the Empire State Building will be lit red starting at sunset to 2:00 a.m. the following day!

Cunard Celebrates Royal Wedding At Sea

Three Queens to Celebrate Royal Wedding at Sea

Prince William and Kate Middleton are to be wed 

on Friday, April 29, 2011 at Westminster Abbey.

After a week of speculation, the royal couple have
announced their wedding plans.

Prince William's private secretary, Jamie Lowther-Pinkerton,
said the couple chose the 1,000-year-old abbey in central
London because it has a sense of intimacy.


The wedding day will be a national holiday in Britain,
known there as a bank holiday, and has been described
as a semi-state occasion. It's also the feast day of St.
Catherine of Siena, whose name Middleton shares,
though that is a coincidence.

Engaged at last

On Nov. 16, the royal family announced that Prince William and Kate Middleton were engaged. The prince had popped the question to his longtime girlfriend during an October 2010 vacation to Kenya, it was revealed. William and Kate pose for the media at St. James's Palace in London on Nov. 16, after they announced their engagement. The couple are to wed in 2011. (Kirsty Wigglesworth / AP) 

"The wedding of Kate and William will be a happy and momentous occasion," said Prime Minister David Cameron on Tuesday. "We want to mark the day as one of national celebration, a public holiday will ensure the most people possible will have a chance to celebrate on the day."

Three Queens to View Royal Wedding at Sea

Guests on board Cunard's three ships - Queen Mary 2, Queen Victoria and Queen Elizabeth - on 29 April 2011, the day of the Royal Wedding, need have no fear of missing one second of the historic union of the future King and Kate Middleton.

Each of the three ships feature Royal Court Theatres - West End in style and West End in size - where the wedding ceremony will be broadcast live.

The day will also be one of celebration on all ships, with that evening's dinner featuring a commemorative menu and a champagne toast.

At the time Queen Elizabeth will be at sea heading for Southampton, Queen Victoria will be at sea in the Mediterranean, and Queen Mary 2 will be on a seven-night Transatlantic Crossing.

These are a few of my favorite things ...

Vacations are all about relaxing ...  What could be more relaxing than a full body massage? About 10 years ago I had my first massage during a cruise vacation. From then on, I was spoiled. I now know the importance of a regular massage and continue my maintenance program at home.

One of the first things I do after getting onboard the ship is to visit the spa. They usually have a tour in progress which highlights the unique treatments they feature. At the end of the tour it's a good idea to book your spa appointments as prime times (such as sea days) fill up quickly.

Hot Stones Treatment

My absolute favorite spa treatment is the hot stones massage. Hot stone massage is a specialty massage that uses smooth, heated stones. They are often basalt, a black volcanic rock that absorbs and retains heat well, but they can be other types. The heat is both deeply relaxing and helps tight muscles release.

The massage therapist heats up your body with a traditional Swedish massage, then massages you while holding a heated stone. As the stone cools, the therapist replaces it with another.  The therapist might also leave heated stones in specific points along your spine, in the palms of your hand, on your belly, or even between your toes to improve the flow of energy in your body.

Cunard Line's Queen Mary 2 made her maiden call to Cape Town, South Africa, March 25th arriving with some special dignitaries onboard.  Among the guests sailing on this segment of the 2010 World Voyage was  the Most Reverend Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu, winner of the Nobel Peace Prize, the Albert Schweitzer Prize for Humanitarianism, the Gandhi Peace Prize and the Presidential Medal of Freedom.

Upon arrival in Cape Town, a ceremony was held unveiling a plaque that read: “This plaque was unveiled by Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu to commemorate his voyage onboard Queen Mary 2 between Port Louis and Cape Town from 20 March to 25 March 2010.”   Also on-hand for the unveiling was Captain Nick Bates and Cunard Line President Peter Shanks.

During the voyage, guests enjoyed a standing room only Cunard Insights Q&A session and lecture with Archbishop Tutu.  Additionally, guests had the opportunity to participate in a silent auction and bid on advanced copies of Archbishop Tutu’s new book, “Made for Goodness,” co-written by his daughter Mpho Andrea Tutu. Proceeds from the silent auction benefited his charity, the Zithulele Hospital based in Eastern Cape province.

“It was an honor to have Archbishop Tutu onboard Queen Mary 2 during this World Voyage, especially as the ship sailed into Cape Town for the first time,” said Peter Shanks. “Our guests were thrilled to have the opportunity to meet this living luminary, and I am delighted to say that he now holds a very special place in Cunard's 170-year history."
