Preparing for Air Travel

Are You Ready to Take to the Friendly Skies Once Again?

These tips will help guide you through the process. We'd be happy to answer any questions you might have as well.  Be sure to watch the video from Alaska Airlines as they do their safety dance.

what to expect - air travel

But First - Is Air Travel Safe?

We recognize that before you decide to travel, you need to address your health and safety concerns.  Latest research indicates that the risks of air travel may be significantly lower than those in your daily life, due to the health and safety measures which have been put in place by the travel industry.

Highlights of Health & Safety Measures:
  • Frequent Air Exchanges in airports and onboard
  • Implementation of HEPA Filtration
  • Forward-facing seas create transmission barriers
  • Use of masks

Don't Forget Your Masks

At the time of writing, there seems to be some confusion on which mask offers the best protection.  There has recently been some suggestions of doubling your masks with a surgical mask first and a cloth mask on top.  Follow recommended CDC guidelines at the time of your travel.   Be sure to note the types of masks which are not allowed (see graphic).   Wear your masks properly !

Setting Sail on Celebrity Edge

Introducing Celebrity Edge

We are back from our preview sailing on Celebrity Edge. Hopefully, you were following our adventure on Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram during that time, but if not, don't worry, as we finally have some time to summarize our experiences here as well.

The Celebrity Edge lived up to all the hype prior to its arrival in Fort Lauderdale. Celebrity Cruises has really knocked it out of the park. We didn't mind waiting 6 years for a new class of ship, if this was the result.

Follow along for complete details. If you have any questions, reach out to us via any of our social accounts.

Get the App Before the Cruise

I'm not a big fan of all the mobile apps that are in use these days. I almost need a second phone just for apps.  However, I did find the new Celebrity Cruises App very easy to use and helpful.  So I recommend you install it in advance.

Once you've signed into your Celebrity Cruises account on the app, you can select your upcoming cruise vacation and all the information you need for planning is now at your fingertips on your phone or other mobile device.

Have you ever come back from a cruise, taken a look at the paper daily planners, and said "I wish that I knew that was going on, I would have done that?"   Well, now, you can do your planning in advance and be sure to have your list of "to do" events on your phone.   Of course, you can always change your mind or just "go with the flow" - that's what cruising is all about.  But for the planners, this is definitely ideal.

Here's a quick video from Celebrity Cruises that demonstrates the new app's functionality.  The app worked seamlessly for me, but my husband did need to do a reinstall during the cruise when it seemed to get hung up, but all was fine after that.

Expedite Your Check-In

Celebrity Cruises recommends using the phone app to check in for your cruise, but you can also do so online on their website.   We like to have all bases covered, so we had the boarding passes on our mobile phones, and also a printed copy (in case you have network issues at the pier for some reason).
We did use the mobile boarding pass on the day of embarkation, along with our passports.

Air Canada Strike

Airline Strike:  Air Canada

Air Canada is very disappointed that an agreement with the Canadian Auto Workers (CAW) leadership has not been reached, leading Air Canada's Call Centre, Airport Check-In and Gate agents at nine Canadian airports (Vancouver, Calgary, Edmonton, Winnipeg, Toronto Pearson, Ottawa, Montreal, Halifax and St. John's NL) to take strike action.

UPDATE - Friday, June 17th: Air Canada and CAW Reach Tentative Agreement on New Contract

Air Canada's full schedule will remain in operation and check-in/airport services provided at international and United States airports are not impacted. All of Air Canada's regional airlines, including Jazz, and the airport check-in services they provide are also fully operational.

Starting Tuesday, June 14, 2011, Air Canada has implemented its contingency service plan at airports and Call Centres to minimize impact on customers. In anticipation of longer than usual lines at airport kiosks with limited available personnel:
  • customers must check-in online or with their mobile device, prior to arriving at the airport.
  • if possible, customers should avoid checking baggage in order to expedite airport processes.
  • customers will have access to over 500 self service kiosks for check-in and baggage tagging in Vancouver, Calgary, Edmonton, Winnipeg, Toronto Pearson, Ottawa, Montreal, Halifax and St.John's NL).
  • same day flight changes will be accommodated free of charge, subject to availability, when requested via online check-in or kiosk.
You may also visit AirCanada.com for more updates.

With the busy Alaska cruise season in progress, this could impact your travel plans, so be sure to monitor this situation closely and allow additional time at the airport.
