Historic Falmouth Trolley Tour

Trolley Tour

We visited Historic Falmouth, Jamaica in October, just a little over six months since the new cruise port officially opened for business. As you may recall, Royal Caribbean invested in the cruise port in collaboration with the Port Authority of Jamaica (PAJ). Together they constructed the all-inclusive resort town on the pier featuring contemporary shops, parks and landscaping, restaurants and bars.

Allure of the Seas docks just outside the gates of this newly constructed resort town. Board a trolley for a tour of the historic town of Falmouth.

Purchase your ticket from the agent and sit back and relax for a guided tour through the cruise port and on to the old town itself.

St. Peter the Apostle Anglican Church of Falmouth

The highlight of the tour is the stop at St. Peter the Apostle Anglican Church, which was built in the late 18th century. Here you'll have the chance to visit the interior of the church and see the old pipe organ, altar, and wooden pews which have been preserved in their original state (only a few have been replaced).

Inside you'll also see the Eastern stained glass window, flanked by the Ten Commandments, Lord’s Prayer and Apostles’ Creed. The church is simple, but yet very moving.

Back on the trolley we drove past the local school where the children were outside playing. They ran to the fence waving and smiling, very happy to see us. They should be because Royal Caribbean has breathed new life into the old town by investing in the cruise port. Very little development had occurred in the town over the last 100+ years, but that has all changed. The Historic Falmouth Cruise Port is serving as a catalyst for the town's rehabilitation and beautification as well as raising awareness of the importance of documenting and preserving Falmouth's history for future generations.

It's not just the local children that are happy to see us.  A common scene in the cruise port is as depicted in this picture.  A local Jamaican man sits at his stand making a wood carving.   He is very happy to personalize any of his carvings for you so that you can take a true souvenir back home from your cruise.

All the people were very friendly.  This was a different Jamaican experience than we had in Ocho Rios or Montego Bay.   For those that have been to Jamaica before, this port can be a refreshing change, as you stroll through the cruise port shopping or perhaps exploring the town a little further, as we did on the trolley.

Port of Falmouth, Jamaica Opens

The long awaited official opening of Falmouth, Jamaica's new port "town" finally arrived.   Royal Caribbean's Oasis of the Seas made its first call in the new port today where it was greeted by a large crowd of locals and officials.

Those that have been following the development of this new port facility know that construction delays prevented an earlier opening this year.    Voyager of the Seas was actually the first ship to visit the new port last month, but the arrival of the Oasis of the Seas was always intended to signal the opening.

Several years ago, Royal Caribbean International,  in collaboration with the Port Authority of Jamaica (PAJ), entered into the joint venture to construct the all-inclusive resort town on the pier featuring contemporary shops, parks and landscaping, restaurants and bars.

Significant progress has been made since Voyager of the Seas visited, however work remains to be done to be fully operational.   Regardless, the town is very proud that this day has finally arrived and they were on hand to celebrate as the world's largest ship sailed into view.

Falmouth Port Explorer Guide provides a useful overview and history of this city, as well as maps, points of interest, and other essential information for tourists.

Port of Falmouth, Jamaica

Royal Caribbean's Voyager of the Seas  became the first cruise ship to call in the brand new port of Falmouth, Jamaica on Thursday.

Falmouth was once a significant shipping center during the Colonial England period but later lost favor over the deep-water ports like Montego Bay and Ocho Rios.   The town's buildings fell into disrepair and the history of this once important town was threatened to be forgotten.

Royal Caribbean International in collaboration with the Port Authority of Jamaica (PAJ), entered into a joint venture to construct an all-inclusive resort town on the pier featuring contemporary shops, parks and landscaping, restaurants and bars, even a helipad, linked to the original town by tram-car and all built to match the colonial aesthetic of times past.

The venture has had a rocky road to this point with delays which prevented the scheduled opening earlier this year.   The official port opening is scheduled for March 22nd when Oasis of the Seas makes its maiden call on the new port.

While doing research for this post, I came across this Royal Caribbean blog article, Falling for Falmouth: An Expert’s Guide to Discovering the Beauty & Adventure of our Newest Port!, which provides more information about the history and the transformation into this new cruise port which should revitalize the area.

Port of Falmouth Jamaica Not Ready

Artist Rendering Port of Falmouth, Jamaica

The opening of the new Port of Falmouth, Jamaica was scheduled for this coming Friday.  We have learned that the port is still under construction and Royal Caribbean has now postponed the first cruise-ship call until February 17th.

As shown in the artist rendering above, the new pier was designed to be able to accommodate Oasis-Class ships.   The first ship that was to call there was to be Royal Caribbean's Navigator of the Seas but it will now be diverted to one of the other existing ports of call in Jamaica (Montego Bay or Ochos Rios).

According to the Jamaica Observer, the port looks "more like a bomb went off on the site than a high-class tourist trap". The article continues "the new Falmouth mega-liner cruise terminal was obviously far from complete".  (click the link to read more)

The port "town" is being built by Royal Caribbean International in collaboration with the Port Authority of Jamaica (PAJ). The plan was to construct an all-inclusive resort town on the pier featuring contemporary shops, parks and landscaping, restaurants and bars, even a helipad, linked to the original town by tram-car and all built to match the colonial aesthetic of times past.

When will the Port of Falmouth officially open?   It's hard to say for sure, but it appears it will be a couple months before construction is far enough along for cruise passengers to enjoy their visit.   We will continue to monitor this situation and provide updates as they become available.  For now, Royal Caribbean is planning for Voyager of the Seas to be the first ship to call there in February.
