There's a Chair Waiting for You on Scarlet Lady

We couldn't wait until morning on our first sea day to explore more of Scarlet Lady.  The clear blue skies made for a great background for many of the images we captured.

Keeping up with their promise, Virgin Voyages Scarlet Lady isn't your typical cruise ship.  As you can see in these images, there are many unique seating arrangements all around the ship.  Whether you want to relax alone, with your significant other, or a large group, there is something for everyone.

Personally, we enjoyed one of the loungers near the pool and hot tubs mid-ship.  There was some shade and it was close to the stairs / elevators so we could easily get around the ship from there.

Check out our photo album for more images around the public decks.

Sail Away Party Norwegian Bliss

Let's Get This Cruise Started ...

After the mandatory safety drill, we headed up to the pool deck to meet some friends and get ready for the Sail Away Party. Our first stop was at the Waves bar for one of the featured drinks. Since we weren't in international waters, the 20% gratuity was added to our tab despite having the unlimited beverage package.

The Cruise Director and staff hosted the Sail Away Party. Soon the pool deck was bopping to the live music. No matter where you were sitting or standing around the pool, you could see the activity on the ship's big projection screen.

As you can see from these pictures, it was a gorgeous day in Los Angeles. What better way to start your cruise than to watch from the open decks as the ship departs the port?

Following the sail away, it was time to head back to our cabin to see if our luggage had been delivered and get ready for the evening festivities.

Super Sunday on Carnival Conquest

Embarkation Day
Superbowl Sunday
Get Ready for the "Big Game"

We embarked the Carnival Conquest on February 2nd shortly after noon.  The cabins weren't ready as expected and we headed up to Lido Deck (deck 9) for some lunch.  The first thing we saw was the big screen in the pool area.   It was displaying the Superbowl logo because later this evening this would be the site of the biggest viewing onboard the ship of the "Big Game".

Lido Deck is the perfect spot to watch the game since you are close to food and of course, beverages.

RedFrog Rum Bar

Join the party at this poolside bar featuring a great selection of “frog approved” Caribbean rum-based concoctions available by the glass or pitcher and plenty of Carnival’s signature private-label draft beer, ThirstyFrog Red.  View RedFrog Rum Bar Menu

BlueIguana Tequila Bar

The menu offers up Mexican favorites, including several brands of tequila and a slew of Mexican brews. There’s a line up of frozen concoctions, cocktails and margaritas served by the glass or pitcher and even a special Mexican beer cocktail.   View BlueIguana Tequila Bar Menu  As we mentioned in earlier posts, we had made a dinner reservation at "The Point" Steakhouse for 6:00 PM, so we only watched the start of the game and then headed off to dinner.   When we returned, the game was in the third period, so we watched the final minutes from the Lido deck chairs.   Unfortunately, it wasn't much of a game, but it still was a lot of fun watching with so many people on the open deck of Carnival Conquest.

Following the game, there was lot's to do onboard the ship.  In our next posts, we'll continue our tour of the ship and the activities onboard and then we'll be headed to our first port of call, Nassau, Bahamas.

Be sure to come back to visit us for more of our experiences and tips to make your next Carnival cruise enjoyable.

Carnival Announces More Changes

Carnival Cruise Line
Cracking Down on
Deck Chair Hogs

It's a beautiful day at sea aboard your Carnival Cruise.  You have some breakfast, change into your bathing suit, lather yourself in sunscreen, grab a book, a hat, and your towel and head to one of the sun decks to catch some rays.

Experienced Cruisers - Does This Sound Familiar?
Upon arriving at the sun deck, you see row upon row of chairs lining the pool area.   Now, you just need to find that perfect spot to hang out for a few hours.   You survey the landscape and see towels, flip-flops, books, and all sorts of items on the chairs.  Someone has beaten you to that chair, so you move on, only to find all the chairs are already taken.

New Program Going Fleetwide

Carnival Cruise Line, responding to guest comments, has recently been testing a program on Carnival Breeze.  The program is designed to ensure that all guests are able to enjoy equal access to sun loungers by preventing seat saving in outdoor deck areas.

Outdoor deck area crew monitor sun lounger usage and when they see a seat that contains a towel or personal belongings that appears to be unoccupied, a notification sticker with the time of day is placed on the chair. If the seat remains empty for another 40 minutes, the contents are removed.

Carnival says that the test program was well received by passengers, and they have decided to gradually roll the program out over the next several weeks with the entire fleet enforcing the new policy by mid-September.   Note:  other cruise lines have similar programs.

Hopefully, with this new program, the next time you are on a Carnival Cruise, you won't have the experience mentioned above, of not finding a sun lounger.

 Carnival Expands
All-You-Can-Drink Package
Now on
Carnival Splendor & Victory

UPDATE 9/15:  Carnival Spirit & Breeze Added

The trial program, "My Awesome Bar Program", debuted on Carnival Victory and has now been expanded to Carnival Splendor.

The per-cruise cost for the "My Awesome Bar Program"  is $42.95 per person per day, plus a 15 percent gratuity.

Purchasers can partake of a wide variety of wine, beer and spirits, as well as sodas, bottled water and non-alcoholic frozen cocktails throughout their cruise.  Not all drinks are included in the program.  Specialty coffees are excluded, as are drinks that are more than $10.    Passengers participating in the program can get a 25% discount on bottles of wine and Champagne, as well as more expensive wines by the glass and cocktails.

There is a big catch, however.  If one passenger in a cabin wants to purchase the beverage package, then all passengers ages 21 years and up in the same cabin must also purchase the package.

Once again, Carnival isn't the only cruise line that has beverage programs of one sort or another.  Some programs are restricted to certain ships and destinations.   It will be interesting to see if this program expands to more ships in the fleet.

We'd love to hear your reaction to these new programs ...
Do you think that this program would be for you?   Do you think the value is commensurate to the cost?   What do you think about requiring all passengers in the cabin to purchase the package?

Note:  For those that haven't cruised before,  as you can now see, alcoholic beverages, soda, and bottled water are extra cost items on the majority of the cruise lines.  For the most part, it's only on the luxury lines that you see the cruise cost include alcoholic beverages, for example.

Navigating the Allure of the Seas

Who's Afraid of
The Big New Ship?

In this article, we'll try to alleviate your fears about finding your way on the largest ship afloat ... Allure of the Seas.

Welcome Aboard
Allure of the Seas

Navigating the Ship

Allure of the Seas has 16 decks which can be a little daunting at first, but you will find that this ship is one of the easiest ships to navigate.   There are several reasons why navigating the ship is easier than you might imagine.

When you embark the vessel, you'll be given a pocket guide to the Allure of the Seas.  It has the usual fold-out map of the ship as you might expect, but  it has much more than that.  It is a miniature guide to all that the Allure has to offer.   You will refer to this pocket guide throughout your cruise. This is just the beginning of the ways Royal Caribbean assists you in navigating the ship.

Where is Chris?  Let's check the digital sign...
Digital Signage

Royal Caribbean had the passenger in mind when building the Allure of the Seas.  We've heard about many innovations, such as the Neighborhoods, the Zip-Line, and AquaTheater, but perhaps the biggest innovation was the various technologies deployed throughout the ship.
  • Get up-to-the-minute, real-time communication for departure information, restaurant availability, entertainment information, mustering and more.
  • Use the interactive screens to map your way to virtually anywhere on the ship.
Touch the screen to begin navigating the ship.   Unlike most ships, that just have the floor plan of the deck you are on, you'll be able to map from your current location to another point on the ship, even if it's on an entirely different deck.

Real-time Planning
The captain on the Azamara Journey told us that the digital signage is intelligent.   Not only will it show you the navigation to your destination, but it will provide an alternate route if the situation is warranted.  For example, if there are already a number of people waiting for an elevator in one location, it will route you to another elevator where you won't have to wait.  Now, that's innovation!!

Standard Deck Layout Signs

I know what you are thinking ... what happens when the computers go down?   There are still the usual deck layout signs for those that don't want to play with a touch screen.  They aren't as much fun or efficient, but they will do the trick, especially if the computer goes down or power is out.
Deck Layout

Of course, Royal Caribbean built in redundancies for power and computers, so hopefully we won't have to write any articles about those situations in the future.

You'll find the 3-D ship deck plan near the elevators, so that too can be checked while you wait for the elevator.   Where is that... forward or aft?

 SIGNS SIGNS ...
EVERYWHERE SIGNS

You'll find directional signs , such as the one shown here to the left, in various public areas of the ship (for example along the Royal Promenade).   These will direct you to nearby attractions, restrooms, etc.

"Signs, signs, everywhere signs..."  words from a famous song years ago.  In that song, it goes on to say "can't you read the signs?"  Well, fear not, even if you aren't by a sign, odds are that if you look puzzled, a friendly crew member will be glad to help you find your destination.    Once you get your bearings of a few major landmarks on the ship, you shouldn't have any difficulty navigating.
