Candid Chat with Royal Caribbean Chairman Richard Fain

Dondra & Richard Fain

We just attended an industry briefing with Dondra Ritzenthaler, Senior Vice President of Sales, Trade Support & Services Celebrity Cruises and her special guest Richard Fain, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Royal Caribbean Group.

Before we get to today's chat, we'd like to personally thank Royal Caribbean Group and Richard Fain in particular,  for his leadership and constantly keeping their travel partners updated throughout the entire pandemic crisis.  His videos, communications, and guest appearances on weekly briefings from Royal Caribbean and Celebrity Cruises has been crucial to our ability to keep our guests updated on latest developments.
Dondra began the chat by thanking Richard for joining us and for his continued communications throughout the pandemic.  She then asked him if he would have done anything differently.   Richard said it's important to "look forward and not back".

He said that he knew that communication would be key.   He knew that people wanted to know what they were thinking and transparency was key.   He feels he got great value from the communication because it forced him to think about where they were going.

He cited the creation of the Healthy Sail Panel with experts in many fields was a critical step in the return to service.

An Emotional Return to Service on Celebrity Edge

Next Dondra asked him about his experience on the first sailing of Celebrity Edge as it returned to service.   Richard said "it was a very emotional moment".  He was onboard one day before passengers, essentially alone with the crew.   As crew greeted him, they were in tears.

Day 2 of his time onboard, they greeted the first guest which again was very emotional.   The passengers on this first sailing included Celebrity's most loyal guests, trade and press, and Royal Caribbean employees.

The consensus of the guests was that it was an emotional moment, but also it felt so normal.

Continual Improvement - Not a "New Normal"

Many protocols are behind the scenes, such as the improved ventilation systems and enhanced medical facilities.   Guests don't even notice the difference.  With the enhanced protocols we could live life normally.

He acknowledged that there have been isolated cases, but it has been better than you'll find across the United States today.   The reason for that is that they control the environment.   Guests are fully vaccinated, social distancing is possible while still allowing for a great vacation experience.  It's one of the safest vacations you can take today.

2021 - 2022 Sailings Open for Booking

This is a unique time in the history of the cruise industry.   The industry has always put health and safety first, but with the new protocols, they have taken it to new heights.  The industry will be better for the improvements made to date and those that will follow.

Ships are sailing with fewer passengers allowing for an even more personal experience as the happy crew are eager to provide the best vacation experience possible.   Why not check out some of the current offers below and let us plan your next cruise vacation?

Making Birthday Memories

Celebrity Edge + Sunset Veranda Cabin + Bubbly + Family + Sunset = Perfect Birthday Memory

After a fun day exploring Key West Florida, we got ready for my birthday dinner just as the sun was starting to set.

There's nothing better than enjoying a glass of bubbly on your private balcony as the ship sails away from port.  To make it perfect, add in a sunset, someone you love, and an aft Sunset Veranda cabin.

This Western Caribbean cruise on Celebrity Edge occurred during my birthday week.  Our cabin steward collaborated with my husband to decorate our cabin.  He also put a bottle of champagne on ice.   Mother Nature provided the sunset - making my birthday perfect.

The icing on the cake, for my birthday celebration, was dinner at Le Petit Chef™. That deserves its own blog post, so stay tuned for more on that later.

Edge Embarkation Lunch

Welcome Aboard
Buffet Lunch

Our cruise might be departing for the Western Caribbean but Celebrity Edge Oceanview Cafe  took us to lands far away.  The buffet offers traditional favorites, as well as cuisine from around the world with a menu that varies.  The selections included Latin, Italian, Indian, Asian, Grilled Favorites, Seafood, Salads, Cheese, Bread and of course scrumptious desserts.

The floor plan is very open with the interior setup with several stations, each featuring a unique cuisine.  My suggestion is that you first take a tour around the entire buffet before deciding what to select.  Take some pictures as well so that you can remember the experience long after you return home.

Did  I Mention Desserts

If you have a sweet tooth like me, you'll want to save room so that you can dive into the desserts.  If you can't find something you like there, waddle over to Scoops for some gelato or ice cream.  There's an extra charge for this venue, but if you are a Captain's Club member, you can get a free scoop of gelato during your cruise.

Celebrity Edge Embarkation

Welcome Aboard
Celebrity Edge

Having been on Celebrity Edge for the pre-inaugural trade and press cruise, we were filled with anticipation for our return visit.  The time had finally arrived for embarkation.

As Elite guests of Celebrity Cruises, our check-in process was pretty painless.  We showed our passports and boarding passes and were escorted to a waiting area.  We were the second group of passengers to board the ship.

The first thing that greats you when you arrive onboard a Celebrity cruise are staff offering you a glass of  champagne.  After finishing our welcome aboard drink, we headed to the elevators to go up to our cabin.

Cabin rooms aren't open, but if you ask nicely, they will usually let you drop off your carry-on bags.   The fire doors were closed to keep passengers out of the hallways. Opening the door we were greeted by a sign which directs you to your cabins.

We selected a Sunset Veranda Balcony cabin this time, since we had already experienced the Infinite Veranda on our previous sailing.   These cabins are all the way aft.  In fact, if you look closely at the image, I'm pointing to our cabin number; it was the very last cabin on this side of the ship.

Our cabin steward hadn't completed the cabin setup yet, but had no problem with us putting our bags in the closet.

On our way back from the cabin, we passed an open doorway which led to the crew staircase.   There was our checked bag waiting to be delivered to our cabin.

It's always comforting to see your checked bags arrive early.  As I mentioned, we take no chances by making sure we have enough clothes for a few days in our carry-on bags in case there is any delay.

We'll continue our embarkation day activities in our next posts.  More photos:  Embarkation album.
