The Art of Disney at Sea

Sharing the Magic
Through Art

Walt Disney was born in Chicago, my hometown, in 1901. He studied art and photography while attending McKinley High School.  After moving to Missouri, he began drawing and selling pictures to friends, family, and neighbors.

It All Started
With a Mouse

Mickey Mouse first appeared in Steamboat Willie (1928) and the rest is history.  Mickey has stood the test of time, and has been welcomed into the hearts and minds of many generations.  Through animation, Mickey and his fellow cast of characters, have come alive on film, and have been captured in many different artistic media since those early beginnings.

#FriFotos Theme - #ART

This week, Friday's photographic topic for the popular Twitter forum, #FriFotos, is #ART.  Participants share their personal photographs that express the announced theme.   As usual, the theme has broad interpretation, making for a very enjoyable day viewing each others entries.

Art At Sea

We kick off our entries with photographs of #ART which were taken onboard Disney Cruise Line's Disney Dream.  While this is a literal interpretation of the theme, we think you'll enjoy the various variations that can be seen onboard the ship.  Some of the artworks are permanent fixtures, while others are part of the Disney Art Collection which can be purchased.  Disney Dream - Art (album)

Stained Glass Off the Beaten Path

Inspired by #FriFotos
#greatINDOORS

Museum Willet-Holthuysen
Amsterdam

This week we had the distinct privilege of co-hosting the Twitter travel event #FriFotos.    is a weekly photo forum by . Theme is revealed every Tuesday 12pm ET.

As usual, we went through our photo archives preparing the the big day, where we get to share some of our images taken during our travels.   A subset of those images contained images of #stainedglass windows from places across the globe.  (Click on any of these images for a closer look).

We've already posted articles with a sampling of images captured during our visit to Yusupov's Palace in St. Petersburg, Russia and also Canterbury Cathedral in England.  You'll admit that those are well known destinations.   In this article, we go off the beaten path.

Inside Canal House

One of the less known attractions in Amsterdam is Museum Willet-Holthuysen a canal house at Herengracht 605 which has been turned into a museum.

The museum houses the extraordinary art and craft collection collected by Abraham Willet (1825-1888).  The exhibitions include ceramics, glassware, silver, furniture, expensive trinkets, paintings, prints, drawings and photographs.

Looking Outside

The garden, which can be seen through the stained glass windows, was laid out as an early 18th-century city garden in the French style.  According to their website, they are not certain how the garden looked when the family was in residence.

All Things Glass Across the Globe

We have several more images of the stained glass, including some more close-up images.  Thanks to the inspiration from #FriFotos, we have just started a Pinterest page, where we'll add more images like these from all across the globe.   As the name implies, it won't be limited to images of stained glass windows.   Anything made from glass, including glassware, chandeliers, and blown glass, will be pinned for your enjoyment.  We welcome your feedback as well.

In Search of Best Cruise Fruit Art

Cruise + Fruit + Creativity
 = #CruiseFruitArt

Welcome aboard - your cabin is being prepared - join us in the buffet for lunch while you wait.

We've just completed our series on Hurricane Preparedness and decided that we should find something a bit lighter to talk about.  So, looking through our photo archives, we stumbled upon this image from our Celebrity Century cruise to the Arctic Circle & North Cape.  Furthermore, we decided that we'd create a new Pinterest board and start pinning more of these Fruit Art images.

Hello Come In - Welcome Aboard

When we entered the buffet, these fruit people greeted us and we definitely felt welcome.  Creations like these are made by some very talented crew members, whose only mission is to make every moment on board the ship enjoyable.

Special Presentations

Turning back the clock a bit, besides finding fruit art in the welcome aboard buffet, it wasn't unusual for there to be an evening set aside during the cruise to showcase the work of these talented individuals.  This image was captured on Celebrity Zenith, which is no longer part of the Celebrity Cruises fleet.   One evening the late night buffet featured these fruit creations.

Grand buffets are pretty much a thing of the past, but there still are many opportunities to view the handiwork of talented crew members.

Watermelon Art

Some of our favorite fruit art was carved out of watermelons.   This image was captured during our Carnival Conquest cruise which happened to coincide with this year's Superbowl game.  Just look at the intricacy of this design.

We have many more example of watermelon fruit art in our new Pinterest board.

We are doubtful that the ship on the right is sea worthy.   However, it definitely is worthy of inclusion in our Cruise Fruit Art collection.

Help Us Find Cruise Fruit Art

Click here to visit our Pinterest board and see more of these fun fruit sculptures.   Do you have any images that you'd like to contribute?

Oceania Sails to Europe

Oceania Insignia - Monte Carlo

Oceania Cruises
2011 European Program
2011 marks Oceania Marina's inaugural European season during which time she joins Insignia and Nautica sailing to every corner of the continent.  The 2011 European Collection contains 32 wonderfully imaginative itineraries of which 21 are new.   Oceania has also added eight new ports within Europe, further expanding their already impressive reach. The new focus for 2011 is a region Oceania calls Continental Europe along the Western European coast.

Enjoy 2 for 1 Cruise Fares with Free Airfare.*

Reflections in Rome
Your 10 - 18 day European cruise adventure starts and ends in ports of call including Barcelona, Rome, Venice, Athens, Istanbul, Copenhagen, Stockholm, London, Miami, and Rio de Janeiro.   When traveling from the United States to Europe, I recommend spending one or more days before your cruise exploring the departure port  while getting adjusted to the time difference.   This also removes the stress of arriving on the cruise departure day.  Some of the itineraries allow you to extend your stay in a different port of call at the conclusion of your cruise.

*Free Airfare promotion applies to economy, round-trip flights only from select Oceania Cruises U.S. & Canadian gateways and does not include ground transfers.  2 for 1 cruise fares are based on full brochure prices, based on double occupancy, and subject to additional terms and conditions.  This Oceania offer expires August 31, 2010.   Booking early gives you best choice of cabins and itineraries.    More information about Oceania Cruises

Oasis of the Seas - Art Collection

Royal Caribbean has a long tradition of presenting important art collections onboard their ships as part of the overall cruise experience. Oasis of the Seas has a unique art collection, one that will live up to it's innovative features.

With just days to go before the first passengers set sail on Oasis of the Seas, artists are at work onboard completing the ship decorations. The photo above is just one of the many modern works of art that you'll find onboard.

In this video, you'll see artists at work and hear about the planning that went into the Oasis' Art Collection.

Build a Collection on a Cruise

Do you remember my discussion of cruising myths back in November? I thought I'd revisit Myth #2: "I will be bored on a cruise" and offer another idea to make sure you aren't bored during your cruise.

Many of you put up Christmas trees in your homes and /or offices. Where did the ornaments come from? Do they have special meaning to you? Do they bring back fond memories? Do they tell a story of places you have been? Do you follow a theme for your tree decorations? Would you like your tree decorations to tell a story, follow a theme, or bring back memories? Do you know someone else that might enjoy an ornament from your cruise (maybe a new-born baby in your family, a client, a friend, a relative)?

Your answers to these questions may be the basis for starting a collection while on your next cruise vacation or perhaps adding to an existing collection. The picture here shows a few ornaments that we purchased while on past cruises. We collected an ornament from each port we visited.

You have several options when starting an ornament collection. Most ships have a selection of various ornaments in the gift shops onboard. You'll usually find a selection of "logo" items including ornaments in the shape of the ship. They may also include ornaments for the various ports of call.

When you are on shore, you can purchase ornaments from various locations. Often, you'll find a Christmas store in town. You may even find some hand-made ornaments that some local vendor has on display.

A little pre-planning will help your shopping experience. Decide what type of ornaments you want to search for before your first purchase. Ideally you'll want to be able to add to your collection on future cruises so that you can continue to enjoy your new project. A lot will depend on where you are starting from also. If you already have a "vacation destination" theme started (it doesn't have to be cruises only) you could either add a ship ornament or an ornament from each port. If you currently have Disney ornaments on your tree, you could look for Disney ornaments in each port.

A collection, such as this, gives you a purpose for your shopping excursions during the cruise. Later, when you display the ornanments, you'll recall the cruise (perhaps remembering the places you went, the people you met, even when and where you made your purchase).

Do you like the idea of starting or adding to a collection? Do you know someone else (on your gift list) that has a collection? If the idea of collecting ornaments doesn't get you excited, perhaps some other collection might. Here are some more ideas:

Building a collection of destination or ship magnets is another easily achievable possibility while cruising the high seas. Shown here are two collections - magnets from each port and magnets from ships we've been on.

I've written an article about collecting magnets on my website. You can read the entire story there.

There are many other ideas for collections from ship / ports of call including: spoons, thimbles, keychains, shot glasses, postage stamps, pens, plates, coffee mugs. The possibilities are endless.

Your mission, should you wish to accept it, is to pick a collectible item and either start or add to a collection during your next cruise. Keep the memory of your cruise alive by building a collection that whenever you view it, you'll bring back those fond memories.

Feel free to comment about your collections.

Happy Collecting

Chris
