How to Solve Mystery Photos

Have you ever been on vacation, seen an interesting building, and decided to take a photo, only to look at it later and wonder ....

What Is This Building?

It's possible that at the time the photo was taken, you might even have known what it was (thanks to your tour guide for example).

But now that you are back home, processing your pictures, you just don't have a clue.

Do you like solving puzzles?

If so, you may become obsessed with finding the answer to what you are looking at.  You'll need to do some searching to find the answer.  Are you ready to give it a try?   We figured this one out - can you?

Start With What You Know

If you are like us, you've put your trip photos into albums by day and / or location.   So you already know where you were when you took this photo.

Location:  We were in Cologne, Germany the day this photo was taken

Still no help? Look closer at the other photos in the album.  In particular, look at those immediately before and after this image.  In this case there was another mystery building before and a second view of the mystery photo after it.
Not much help, so back to the drawing board.

Any Hints in Photos?

The photo was taken just before 1 PM so that means we were at lunch and about to sail from Cologne on the Rhine River.  There appears to be writing on the building and a Globus bus in the parking lot.

Enlarging the photo in an editor, we can make out some letters which appear to end in "astei". Taking a closer look the first letter appears to be "B".  We won't give you the answer just yet in case you want to solve this on your own.

Solve This Puzzle - Get an OBC on an Avalon River Cruise Booked through Us

Go forth and use Google or your favorite search engine to solve this puzzle and tweet us your answer.  We can tell you it is not a bridge (in case that is one of your possible answers).

Tweet your answer to us by Feb 5th for a chance at the OBC onboard any 2016 or 2017 Avalon Waterways river cruise.   (you can contact us via email if you don't use Twitter)

Additional photos can be found on our Rhine & Moselle Shutterfly page:

Carnival Beards Make More Changes

Future Carnival Vacation
Certificates Eliminated

Those that travel frequently are aware that loyalty has its rewards. Many of you may have gotten to your destination without incurring airfare costs by turning in miles.

The cruise industry also has loyalty programs and other incentives.

Until this announcement from Carnival Corporation, passengers on most Carnival Ships could stop at the Future Carnival Vacation Desk, fill out a form, pay a minimal deposit, and get a certificate to use on a future Carnival cruise. As a reward, you would earn an onboard credit when redeeming the certificate at a later date.

The certificates had an expiration date, several years into the future, which would allow you ample time to decide on when and where you wanted to cruise. There was no need to determine that while on your current cruise.

Effective with sailings on or after September 27, 2012, Carnival has discontinued the program.  Certificates that are out in the field will be honored through the expiration date on the form.

Guests can still book a confirmed booking while on most Carnival ships.  NOTE:  There are no Future Carnival Vacations desks on Carnival Imagination, Carnival Inspiration, Carnival Sensation, Carnival Spirit and Carnival Victory.

Receive Up to $200 OBC

3,4, or 5 day cruise 6 day cruise 7,8,9, or 10 day cruise 12+ day cruise
$50 OBC per stateroom $75 OBC per stateroom $100 OBC per stateroom $200 OBC per stateroom

There has been quite a buzz in the online communities since Carnival made this announcement. The attractive benefit of the previous program was that you didn't have to decide destination or timeframe ahead of time. You just had to decide that you wanted to do another cruise in the future on Carnival, and when the time was right, call you agent to make a confirmed booking. The OBC can be combined with other offers, but in reality, there is little benefit to tying up your money in advance, and it could actually become a disadvantage if you were to find some different cruise that you'd rather take. Be sure to be familiar with all the restrictions before you decide to book under the new program.

Get a Toaster With Carnival Cruise Deposit

 Value-Add Incentives for Cruise Bookings
New Carnival Cruise Rules Start August 1st

What would you think if your travel agent gave you a toaster when you booked a Carnival Cruise?

Do you remember opening a bank account and getting a toaster?
If you do, don't admit it because you will be telling your age.

Value-Add Incentives

Definition: A value-add is a booking incentive provided by a travel agency that offers a value to
the consumer above and beyond what Carnival includes in the rate.

In lay terms, your travel agent gives you a gift to thank you for your business.  Prior to the rule changes which are about to take effect, this gift could have taken many different forms but was limited to a percentage of the cruise fare.  (I'll spare you all the gory details.)

New Rules

Effective August 1, 2012, value-add booking incentives may only be non-cash equivalent items and have a value equal to or less than USD 25.  What that means is you won't be seeing advertisements like the one above any longer.    An onboard credit (OBC) would have a cash-equivalent (as would bar coupons, photo credits, gas cards).

Cash-equivalent add-ons are no longer permitted.

Existing marketing plans that have had previous approval from Carnival, will be allowed to continue through the end of 2012, so some ads may not disappear right away.

What does this mean to the Consumer?

You could very well get that toaster from your agent.  Well, not really likely - but I think we've made our point.

After all, how many tote bags does one need?   After awhile, if you've been a faithful client,  your agent may run out of fresh ideas when they look for a welcome aboard gift for your embarkation day.

Bon Voyage bar credit and photo coupons (i.e. cash equivalent), airline miles, third party cash back offers, reduced or waived deposits, free or discounted insurance, free or discounted shore excursions, free or discounted hotel nights, reduced airfare, gift cards or anything that equates to a cost associated with the cruise are all banned.

Carnival believes they are leveling the playing field between all agencies, since value-add incentives were getting excessive in some cases.   So this should make it easier for consumers to compare "deals".

What does this mean to the Travel Agent?

It means their hands are tied.   For those guests that don't drink, and have been on many cruises, there are definitely fewer choices that can be used as a thank you gift.   The agency that offers the "best toaster" might get the business or guests that aren't concerned with personal service and advice, may just bypass the agents completely and book with the cruise line.

(see examples of banned promotions above)

Carnival believes that this change is a step which ensures that all of their Travel Partners have the equal ability to sell their product at the same great rate.

What does this mean for Carnival?

Time will tell - one thing for certain, they better adjust their budgets for the downturn in bar credit and photo credit sales.

Obviously Carnival is attempting to control what the consumer pays for their cruise this way.

It will be interesting to see what other cruise lines do in response.   It will also be interesting to see how passengers react to the changes.   They may not even notice the change for some time, especially first-time cruisers that have nothing to compare against.

Final Thoughts

We will continue to work with our guests to find them the best value for their vacation dollars.  We are happy that great service and advice doesn't fall under cash-equivalent value-add.   Maybe Carnival is right - once the prices are equalized, the only differentiation is service. Therefore we feel that we have an edge after all with these new rules.   We'll just have to be creative with thank you gifts now.

You still have a couple days to take advantage of our July OBC offer - if you want to book one last Carnival cruise under the old rules.

Streamwood Summer Celebration 2012

Streamwood Summer Celebration

Exclusive Royal Caribbean Sale in Conjunction with
Streamwood Summer Celebration

Meet me at the show

Once a year we participate in our local Chamber of Commerce hosted Summer Celebration.  For those in the area, it is your chance to meet us in person to discuss your vacation plans, pick up some brochures, and take advantage of our exclusive offers setup in conjunction with the event.   Here is one of those specials that we will be featuring during the event July 27th - 29th.  We also extend the offers to our readers - ask us for complete details.  (click the link above for times and location)

Brochures

We get several calls for cruise ship and land vacation brochures.   In this day and age, the majority of the suppliers have cut down on printed materials and replaced them with online versions.

We stock brochures that are available from our suppliers on a regular basis and increase our stock in time for this annual event.   If you are in the area, this is a great opportunity for you to browse our "wish books".

Did you know that was how I convinced my husband to take an Alaska cruise?  He had said, "It's cold there.   We live where it's cold.  Why would I go on a vacation to somewhere that is cold?"   Well we've been back to Alaska several times since that initial look at an Alaska brochure.

What's on your wish list?   If we don't have a brochure, we'll be happy to do some research and provide you with all the details.

Come see us if you are in the area this weekend - or call us afterwards to discuss your wish list.

No SpongeBob isn't on Spring Break.   In fact, starting in April on Norwegian Jewel and this Summer on Norwegian Epic, Nickelodeon and Norwegian Cruise Line have teamed up to create one-of-a-kind family cruise vacations... introducing Nickelodeon at Sea, exclusively on Norwegian Cruise line.

This program was announced in January, 2010... Nickelodeon At Sea

Merry Christmas - Cruise Ship Style

    MERRY CHRISTMAS

Holiday greetings to all on this Christmas Day. I hope this day finds you surrounded by family and friends.

For the men and women serving our country, a special holiday greeting - may the peace of Christmas stay with you now and until you are safely home again. Thank you for your service. May you be home with family and friends very soon.

If you happen to be reading this while on a cruise ship, wish the crew members you see a happy holiday. You might not even consider this while having a great time, but today might be very difficult for them since they are away from their famiiles and friends. Some of them may have been away from home for months.

The holiday season is one of my favorite times to cruise. I live in the midwest, so getting away from cold and snow is a big benefit, but also, the ships and ports are very festive. The picture above was taken during the Holiday Show earlier this month while onboard Carnival Elation. The children participating in Camp Carnival had a special treat - they were part of the cast for the show. Imagine being on stage in front of hundreds of people at that young age.

Another reason that I like to sail during this time of year is the ability to purchase unique Christmas presents in the various ports of call. I love shopping while on a cruise ... no long lines or angry shoppers to contend with. Plus the joy on the recipient's face when they open the gift and realize that it was purchased while I was on a cruise. Of course, gifts could be purchased for Christmas anytime during the year - just don't forget where you hide them.

Whether you sailed away to a warm destination on a ship or traveled to be with family and friends, I hope that you had a wonderful Christmas Day.

And finally, my gift to you ...

Welcome Home Oasis of the Seas, Welcome Home

    OASIS OF THE SEAS
    ARRIVES IN
    FORT LAUDERDALE

Welcoming Oasis of the Seas to Fort (Celebration Details)

Fort Lauderdale Inlet Webacm (watch ships arrive)

Friday, November 13, 2009, Dateline Fort Lauderdale, Florida

For the last fourteen days, we have been watching the Oasis of the Seas journey from Finland to Fort Lauderdale, Florida. The day we have been waiting for has finally arrived.

For some people Friday the 13th is an unlucky day, but for Royal Caribbean International, the hope was that this day would actually be quite the opposite. The world's largest cruise ship's revised schedule called for completion of its 14-day Trans-Atlantic journey with the pulling into its new berth in Port Everglades, Florida.

The Oasis of the Seas didn't disappoint - it arrived right on schedule
Those who wanted to watch the arrival of Oasis in Port Everglades, accompanied by a flotilla of fireboats and private vessels, could do so at John U. Lloyd Park, Dania Beach. (see link above).

As you can see from the photo above, it was a glorious day in Fort Lauderdale, as the Oasis of the Seas was escorted into the harbor with the traditional fireboat salute. I will be posting more pictures as they arrive from additional sources who were onhand for today's events.

Captain Bill gives final report from the bridge before arriving in Fort Lauderdale. In this video, you see the arrival from crew's perspective.

I hope you have enjoyed our coverage of the Oasis of the Seas Atlantic Crossing as much as we have enjoyed bringing it to you. Royal Caribbean and STX Europe should be very proud of their accomplishments. The ship handled the rough North Atlantic seas, facing hurricane force winds and waves, without much of a problem. The only issue was that it delayed the arrival into Florida by two days.

We will conclude our coverage of Oasis's Journey with stories and pictures of today's activities. There is still time for you to take advantage of our exclusive OBC offer (see below). Don't miss your opportunity to explore this amazing ship first-hand.

I guess the only thing left to say is ...

Welcome Home Oasis of the Seas, Welcome Home !!

Oasis of the Seas Back to the Bridge

Captain William Wright on the Bridge of Oasis of the Seas - Courtesy Royal Caribbean International

While crossing the North Atlantic Ocean on its way to Port Everglades, Florida, Oasis of the Seas encountered strong winds and high seas. Due to the inclement weather, Oasis of the Seas is now scheduled to arrive at Port Everglades on the morning of November 13, 2009, two days later than originally scheduled. The late arrival will not impact any inaugural events, promotional activities or revenue sailings.

We continue our coverage of the Oasis of the Seas' first crossing by visiting with Captain Bill on the bridge. Joining him on the bridge are two well-known retired Captains of Royal Caribbean International: Captain Kent Ringborn (Ret.), also known as the "signing captain" to those of us that had the great fortune to sail with him, who was at the helm of the Radiance of the Seas when it was introduced and Captain Ulf Svensson (Ret.), who brought the Grandeur of the Seas into service. Both retired captains were amazed at the ship and how stable it was and how well it handled the rough seas of the North Atlantic.

Hear their comments and see their reaction to the ship in the following video.

In the following video, Captain Bill provides a detailed explanation of the equipment on the bridge of the Oasis. Then, you will get a behind-the-scenes look at the Turku, Finland shipbuilding yard where Oasis was built. Learn more about shipbuilding on STX Europe website.

    WLCN Azamara Cruises

    Worlds Largest Cruise Night
    Azamara Cruises

AZAMARA CRUISES was introduced to the US market in 2007 by Royal Caribbean International & Celebrity Cruises as a separate "Deluxe" brand of cruising. The Azamara brand is different from Royal Caribbean and Celebrity Cruise sister companies in many ways. This "Deluxe" niche designation puts the cruise experience above the "Premium" niche where Celebrity is and puts this brand in competition with Oceania and Crystal. The Azamara Cruise experience is focused upon the destination, rather than the vessel, and clients find that the brand offers a shipboard experience where attentive personal service is offered in a country club casual atmosphere.

The Azamara fleet consists of 2 very popular former Renaissance Cruise Line Vessels. These modern mid-size ships host 698 guests, offer a wide variety of dining options and have been radically refurbished to have their own distinct upscale look. Azamara Journey and Azamara Quest cruise in Europe, South America and the Caribbean. Azamara voyages tend to be longer in length and the itineraries often include overnight stays in popular ports of call.

Azamara Cruises Offers for WLCN 2009

$300 OBC per stateroom for Verandas only on select 2010 Europe sailings

$500 OBC per stateroom for Suites only on select 2010 Europe sailings

Have I perked your interest a little? You are probably wondering what destinations are included and what ships. What sail dates are included?
