Dinner at The Wake

The Wake is Virgin Voyage's answer to the Steak & Seafood dining venue.  Like all their dining selections, there is no extra charge for what would be a specialty restaurant on most other cruise ships.  As with the other dining options, select some starters to share and / or some for yourself.  Be adventurous if you like and try something different.  The steaks were excellent as were the starters and of course, the desserts.

This was one of the best meals of our cruise.  We considered going  back another night, but there weren't any reservations available at a time that worked for us.

Tip:  You can book your dinner selections on their app before you sail.

          Craving a Steak Dinner?

Norwegian Cruise line's signature Cagney's Steakhouse proudly serves certified Angus Beef® brand steaks. How do you like yours done? You decide from Rare to Well Done, although I'd suggest something in the middle.

We were first exposed to Norwegian Cruise Lines's Freestyle Dining in 2001, when we sailed the inaugural voyage on Norwegian Sun. It was the first ship they build specifically to take advantage of their new dining options.

Much has changed since then, when we had to wait in long lines to enter a restaurant to today, where you can pre-reserve your dining options, or check onboard to see what venue has a short wait.  To enjoy specialty dining venues, select  al a carte pricing onboard the ship or purchase a dining package in advance of your voyage.

While we still like "traditional dining" where you have an assigned dining time and specific table assignment, freestyle dining is a welcome change, especially when you have a set schedule to adhere to, like we do during our conference cruise.  You decide when and where and with whom you want to dine each evening during your cruise.

Celebrate a Special Occasion  

Cagney's Steakhouse was the scene of a special birthday dinner for one of our fellow agent friends during our Norwegian Bliss sailing.















Pictured here is the 20 oz. Potterhouse Steak, Cheese & Vegetable Marmite Soup, Onion Rings, and Au-Gratin Potatoes.  See the menu above for additional choices and al a carte pricing.  We finished the meal with a chocolate layer Birthday Cake provided by Norwegian Cruise Line.

Elevate Your Cruise Dining Experience

Sterling Steakhouse on Sapphire Princess

This is more than just a traditional steakhouse, serving the highest quality cuts of beef, including New York strip steak, Porterhouse and Filet Mignon. Voted among the "Best Cruise Ship Steakhouses" by USA TODAY.

We purchased this voyage during a previous cruise under Princess Cruises Anniversary Sale which included a free specialty dining choice.   There are several options onboard Sapphire Princess:  Sterling Steakhouse, Crab Shack, and Sabatini's Italian Restaurant.  We selected Sterling Steakhouse.

Since we were returning from our shore excursion in Kota Kinabalu around 6 PM, and our normal dining time was 5:30 PM (Early seating) we made a reservation for 7 PM Thursday evening.

Tip: Sterling Steakhouse and Crab Shack utilize a portion of Horizon Court on different evenings throughout the voyage, so we suggest you call to make reservations early during your cruise so that you can have the most flexibility in scheduling.

Starters

Both of us ordered Black and Blue Onion Soup - Fresh Thyme, Jack Daniels, and Roquefort Crust.  If you are a fan of baked french onion soup, this one's for you.

Main

Our steak choices were Princess Cut (Classic, Tender & Delicate - 8 oz) Filet Mignon and a Rib-Eye (Rich with Heavy Marbling - 14 oz). These were served with Loaded Baked Idaho Potato and Sauteed Wild Mushrooms and mushroom sauce gravy.


Dessert - Chocolate Journeys SM

Milk Chocolate and Peanut Butter Bar with Honey Roasted Peanuts

This delicious dessert is a tribute to the love and marriage of peanut butter and chocolate. The base, developed by Chef Love is a moist cake made from almond flour and brown butter, layered with a silky smooth peanut butter cream and topped with a layer of milk chocolate mousse.

Montevideo Pier and Markets

Montevideo, Uruguay

Montevideo was one of the few ports where our ship was docked.  At the conclusion of our excursion, the motor coach let us off near the ship.  Instead of getting back onboard, we opted to check out the market and search for some local cuisine for lunch.

It was a short walk to the market area.  On the way there, we had a vantage point of our ship that was framed by several nautical items which made for a great photo opportunity.

Montevideo BBQ Lunch

One of the things on our bucket list for this trip was to have some authentic South American BBQ.   We figured that we wouldn't have time to have it in Buenos Aires, so we decided to enjoy a leisurely lunch in Montevideo.

We had been told to look for the main building which contained the meat market.  Finding the building was quite easy - we just had to follow the smell of open fire BBQ pits.  Imagine your backyard BBQ on steroids - that's the best way to describe the sense of smell both inside and outside the market.

Once inside we saw vendor after vendor preparing meats on their open flame pits.  We started walking aimlessly from row to row until we cam across some fellow passengers who were just completing their lunch.   We stopped to check out the menu and they told us about their meal and encouraged us to eat there.  They told us the waitress would take great care of us and that the food was fabulous.   That made our decision easy - what's better than a recommendation from someone who has just eaten at the restaurant.

We ordered steaks and fries.  We had a side of bread and a sauce which really brought out the flavor of the meat.  We highly recommend Don Garcia Restaurant for the food and great service.

After our lunch we shopped at the local vendors selecting some hand-made items as gifts.  We then returned to the ship, taking a few more pictures in the harbor area, mainly of our ship.
