Royal Caribbean IRMA Humanitarian Deployments

Royal Caribbean

Ships Deployed
To Assist In
Wake of IRMA

This base image, courtesy NOAA, shows Hurricane IRMA approaching the U.S. Virgin Islands. As one of the most popular Caribbean cruise destinations, the devastation is truly saddening. Our thoughts and prayers go to all impacted by the hurricane, in the USVI, and all along its path. This update from Royal Caribbean Cruise Line makes me proud to be part of the cruise industry.

We have been updating the ever changing Cruise Ship Impact throughout this storm. The latest update from Royal Caribbean deserves special mention.

UPDATE:  (26  Sep 17)  Royal Caribbean continues to provide humanitarian aid putting that ahead of normal operations.   In this latest update, Adventure of the Seas current cruise is being canceled to provide humanitarian assistance to ports hit by Hurricanes Irma & Maria.

September 26, 2017 at 11 AM EDT (next update tomorrow at 2 PM EDT)

Our thoughts and prayers are with our neighbors in San Juan and the other affected islands as they rebuild after Hurricanes Irma and Maria.

To learn more about our humanitarian efforts, click here.

The following sailing is being cancelled:

Adventure of the Seas: September 30

Given the impact of Hurricane Maria, we are cancelling this cruise to utilize the ship for evacuation and humanitarian efforts. The ship will arrive on Wednesday, September 27 and will operate humanitarian calls in San Juan, St. Thomas and St. Croix to aid in the evacuation and donate critical supplies to each destination. The ship will bring evacuees to Fort Lauderdale before returning to San Juan on October 6 to prepare for the October 7th cruise.

September 9, 2017 at 2 PM EDT (next update at 6 PM EDT)

We are closely monitoring Hurricane Irma’s path and its potential impact to our current and upcoming sailings. Royal Caribbean’s Chief Meteorologist, James Van Fleet, is closely tracking the storm’s progress, and the current forecast is as follows:

Hurricane Irma is a category 4 storm with sustained winds of 130 mph. The storm is currently located north of Cuba and is moving northwest at 12 mph. The current forecast suggests that the eye will be coming ashore in the Lower to Middle Keys and Naples early Sunday morning, followed by Tampa Bay Sunday evening. The storm should exit the Florida area late Monday, pre-dawn Tuesday. This farther west track we have seen over the last couple days is due to Hurricane Jose’s strength and its proximity to Hurricane Irma.

We do not expect Hurricane Jose to have any impact on our upcoming sailings as this time.

We are mobilizing ships and supplies to help people in need. In coordination with the US and local governments we are dispatching ships to St. Thomas and St. Maarten and stand ready to assist Key West, Tampa and other locations.

Presently, Adventure of the Seas will make a humanitarian stop in St. Maarten on Sunday and Majesty of the Seas will make humanitarian calls in St. Thomas and St. Maarten to provide supplies and also assist in transporting evacuees in St. Maarten to safety. Additionally, we have Empress of the Seas and Enchantment of the Seas ready to assist Key West and Tampa once the impact of the storm is known.

Update: August 30th

Tropical Storm Isaac continued to batter the Louisiana / Mississippi region today as it moved so slowly.  It has finally become a Tropical Depression and picked up some speed, up to 12 MPH.

Isaac is still impacting cruise schedules with Carnival Elation being the latest victim.  It was originally scheduled to sail out of New Orleans on a 4-day itinerary August 30th.   That was changed to a 3-day from Mobile, Alabama on August 31st.   Even that is at risk because both ports remain closed.   Carnival Cruise Line is monitoring the situation and advising passengers via text and posts on their website.   We have the link for updates below.

We will attempt to keep this site updated as additional changes are made to cruise ship itineraries. For the absolute latest published information see the cruise line links directly.

All changes are being made with the interest in safety of the ships, crew, and passengers.  Please be certain that you cruise specialist, cruise line, and airlines have your contact information.  Monitor the internet and other news media for updates.

Isaac is expected to make landfall in southeastern Cuba this afternoon, then skirt the northeastern coast of Cuba through the overnight hours tonight.

Once off the northern coast of Cuba, Isaac is expected to strengthen into a hurricane over the warmer waters of the Florida Straits and cross the Florida Keys sometime Sunday night or early Monday morning, then head into the very warm waters of the eastern Gulf of Mexico.

Hurricane warnings have been issued for portions of the northern Gulf Coast as  Tropical Storm Isaac continues its west-northwestward march into the Gulf of Mexico.

Isaac will continue to affect southern Florida with heavy rain, gusty winds and a tornado threat as it moves through the Florida Keys and into the Gulf Sunday evening. Isaac poses a potential serious threat to portions of the northern Gulf Coast Tuesday into Wednesday. All interests from Louisiana to Mississippi, Alabama and the Florida Panhandle should watch the progress of Isaac closely and begin to make preparations. Even areas as far west as extreme southeast Texas should continue to monitor Isaac's progress in case a farther west track materializes.

(UPDATE: August 28th)

Hurricane Isaac is impacting travelers and the transportation industry causing hundreds of flight cancellations and delays.
Isaac's peak impacts are bearing down on the Gulf Coast beginning today. Hurricane warnings continue for portions of the northern Gulf Coast, including New Orleans, Biloxi and Gulf Shores as Isaac continues its northwestward march. Hurricane watches are posted as far west as Morgan City, La.

In addition, a number of tropical storm warnings are in effect. A tropical storm warning is in effect for the Florida Panhandle.

Even as Isaac's center of circulation moves by, locally heavy rainbands can be expected. Rainfall amounts over 10" are likely as Isaac slows down immediately prior to, and after landfall, in southeast Louisiana, southern Alabama, Mississippi and the western Florida Panhandle. In a few cases, amounts exceeding 20" are possible.   We have already seen in excess of 9" of rain in some parts of the Florida east coast.

Expect business closures and air, maritime, and ground transport disruptions throughout the region. Prolonged power and telecommunications outages are also possible.

(Update: August 29)

Hurricane Isaac made landfall in Southeast Louisiana at 6:45 PM local time on Tuesday.  It made a second landfall overnight around 3 AM.   This slow moving storm is dumping rain on the entire area, knocking out power to half a million people as 80 MPH winds continue to pound Louisiana.

Damage is expected to be much higher than normal for this category hurricane, it is still a Category One, because of the slow movement.   In addition to the storm surge, heavy rains, and flooding, there is a potential for tornadoes to be spawned from the storm.

IGOR WAS A WEAKER HURRICANE THAN ANTICIPATED
 AS IT APPROACHED BERMUDA

Storm Aftermath in Bermuda... At first light, the people of Bermuda breathe a sigh of relief as they realize IGOR wasn't the predicted strength as it came ashore.  It came ashore as a Category One and not the originally predicted Category Two or Three.  Winds of 75 MPH with gusts of 90 MPH or so are much better than those in excess of 100 MPH with higher gusts.

As expected, IGOR did stay a long time due to it's massive size.   There were the anticipated power outages, wind damage, and flooding.   BELCO, the local electric company, is making plans to restore power to over 28,000 customers Monday morning.    According to local police reports, there were no fatalities or major injuries reported.

At this time,  only Hurricane Igor remains as a big threat to the region.    Hurricane Julia is now a tropical storm and Hurricane Karl has become a tropical depression after slamming into Mexico. Conditions in Bermuda will continue to deteriorate this weekend.  The eye of the storm will be closest to Bermuda late Sunday or early Monday.

As a service to our readers, we have RSS feeds from the NHC which can provide up to date information about these tropical storms.   We will also monitor the cruise lines for any itinerary changes as a result of the storms.   A special thank you to the NHC, NOAA, the cruise lines, and others who have contributed to this blog by providing updates on this very serious tropical cyclone.

Earlier ...

Tropical Storm Igor was strengthening  Saturday September 11th and threatening to become a Hurricane.   On Sunday morning, September 12th, the storm did strengthen into a Category Two Hurricane.  The storm is going through a period of rapid intensification and as predicted has become a Major Hurricane (Category Four) within 12 hours.

There are no watches or warnings, but we will continue to monitor this storm for potential dangers.  The current storm track appears to take it over open waters for the next few days.  Igor appears to have its sights on Bermuda as it churns along with Julia in the open waters of the Atlantic.   This is the first time since the late 90s that two major hurricanes were in the Atlantic at the same time.

If guests opt to not sail on the revised itinerary, they also may cancel and receive a letter of credit for the amount of the cruise paid to Royal Caribbean. That letter of credit may be applied to a future Royal Caribbean cruise.

In the five days since this storm became a Tropical Storm, Earl has continued its path westward and continued to grow in strength.  It became a Category One Hurricane Sunday night August 29th, and quickly grew to a Category Two later that night.   On Monday, Earl continued to strengthen to a Category Four Hurricane, weakened to a Category Three but strengthened again.  While it is now a Category Two hurricane, it is still a powerful storm and will remain so for the near future.

Based on the current forecast, Earl will be passing east of the Bahamas and then heading for the Northeast coast of the United States by this weekend.

Royal Caribbean Tropical Weather Update

September 01, 2010 5 PM E.S.T

Due to the forecasted path of Hurricane Earl, Royal Caribbean International is altering the current itineraries for Monarch of the Seas, Majesty of the Seas, Enchantment of the Seas, Oasis of the Seas and Freedom of the Seas.

Due to the forecasted path of Hurricane Earl, Royal Caribbean International has altered the current itineraries for Monarch of the Seas, Majesty of the Seas, Enchantment of the Seas, Oasis of the Seas and Freedom of the Seas.

Monarch of the Seas was unable to call on CocoCay, Bahamas Tuesday, August 31. The ship sailed directly to Nassau, Bahamas, where it will stay until midnight Wednesday, September 1. The ship will spend Thursday at sea as it returns to Port Canaveral on Friday, as scheduled. Monarch of the Seas is currently sailing a four-night itinerary, which departed Port Canaveral on August 30.

Majesty of the Seas extended its port call in Key West, Florida on Tuesday, August 31 until early Wednesday morning. It will spend the remainder of Wednesday at sea, and call into Nassau on Thursday, September 2. The ship will return to the Port of Miami on Friday, as scheduled. Majesty of the Seas is currently sailing a four-night itinerary, which departed the Port of Miami on August 30.

Enchantment of the Seas called on San Juan, Puerto Rico Sunday, as scheduled, but cancelled its call at St. Thomas on Monday in order to avoid inclement weather from the storm. Instead, the ship called on Samana, Dominican Republic on Monday, August 30 and Labadee, Haiti, on Tuesday, August 31. The ship will spend Wednesday, Thursday and Friday at sea as it returns to Baltimore on Saturday, as scheduled. Enchantment of the Seas is currently sailing a nine-night Caribbean itinerary, which departed Baltimore on August 26.

Oasis of the Seas was unable to make its scheduled port calls to Charlotte Amalie, St. Thomas on Tuesday, August 31 and Phillipsburg, St. Maarten on Wednesday, September 1. The most recent forecast simply placed the storm too close to these ports of call during the time Oasis of the Seas would be sailing there. The ship will now call at Costa Maya and Cozumel, Mexico, on Wednesday and Thursday, respectively. Oasis of the Seas is sailing a seven-night Caribbean itinerary, which departed Ft. Lauderdale on August 28.

Freedom of the Seas will be unable to make its scheduled port calls to Charlotte Amalie, St. Thomas on Wednesday, September 1 and Phillipsburg, St. Maarten on Thursday, September 2. The most recent forecast simply placed the storm too close to these ports of call during the time Freedom of the Seas would be sailing there. The ship called on CocoCay, Bahamas on Monday, as scheduled, spent Tuesday at sea, and called into George Town, Grand Cayman on Wednesday. On Thursday, the ship will visit Cozumel, Mexico. The ship will spend Friday and Saturday at sea as it returns to Port Canaveral, Florida on Sunday, as scheduled. Freedom of the Seas is currently sailing a seven-night Caribbean itinerary, which departed Port Canaveral on August 29.

No other Royal Caribbean International ship's itinerary is currently being affected by Hurricane Earl. Royal Caribbean will continue to closely monitor weather conditions and will update this information if there are any additional itinerary alterations due to the storm's projected path.

Updated August 31, 2010 at 3 pm

At Norwegian Cruise Line, the safety and security of our guests and crew is of the utmost importance. Therefore, the company is closely monitoring the path of Hurricane Earl and Tropical Storm Fiona.

Because of Hurricane Earl’s path which took it west of Bermuda, Norwegian Dawn is sailing its original itinerary. The ship is currently en route to Bermuda and will arrive on Wednesday morning as scheduled.

Because of the adverse weather, Norwegian Jewel did not stop at Great Stirrup Cay today and instead docked in Nassau a day early. The ship will stay in Nassau overnight. Depending on the path of Hurricane Earl, there is a possibility that the ship will need to leave Nassau early tomorrow morning.

We will continue to closely monitor the weather conditions and will update this information and notify our guests if there are any additional itinerary changes because of the storms’ projected paths.
We appreciate our guests understanding.

Staying Prepared

Cruise lines will do everything to keep passengers and crew safe. A cruise is rarely cancelled because of weather, even hurricanes. The cruise lines monitor progress of any storms both in their main offices and onboard the vessels. They work closely with the various weather services, such as NOAA and NHC, to make determinations about itinerary deviations.
