The goal of NOAA's Hurricane Preparedness Web site is to inform the public about the hurricane hazards and provide knowledge which can be used to take ACTION. This information can be used to save lives at work, home, while on the road, or on the water.

A hurricane is a type of tropical cyclone or severe tropical storm that forms in the southern Atlantic Ocean, Caribbean Sea, Gulf of Mexico, and in the eastern Pacific Ocean. A typical cyclone is accompanied by thunderstorms, and in the Northern Hemisphere, a counterclockwise circulation of winds near the earth’s surface.

Every year, hurricanes put communities at risk of catastrophic damage from storm surges, flooding, high winds, and tornadoes.  During National Hurricane Preparedness Week, we rededicate ourselves to preventing loss of life and damage to property by raising awareness about hurricane hazards and taking action to protect our families, our homes, and our neighborhoods.

The Atlantic Hurricane Season officially starts on June 1st and runs through November. We updated our Hurricane Preparedness Series last year with additional guidance due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Hurricanes & Covid-19

Planning for hurricane season and other potential disasters can be stressful, and during the COVID-19 pandemic, it may be especially so. Public health and emergency response professionals have advice to help you safely prepare, evacuate, and shelter for severe storms while protecting yourself and others from COVID-19. Here are some tips to help you and your family stay safe during hurricane season this year.  

• Give yourself more time to prepare

• Supplies may be in limited supply or unavailable
• Keep yourself safe while shopping for supplies
• Know about changes regarding local shelters
• Follow local recommendations for social distancing and mask usage
• Have a "go" kit prepared
• Be sure to plan for anyone at high risk or in need of extra assistance
• Stay safe after the hurricane

Recipe for a Hurricane

You already know that hurricanes are one of the most destructive forces on earth, but did you even wonder why they form? Three requirements are needed to create a hurricane: warm ocean waters (80 degrees Fahrenheit or warmer), moist air, and converging winds. Watch this video to learn more about how they form.

Hurricane Insurance Coverage This Hurricane Preparedness Week, call your insurance company or agent and ask for an insurance checkup to make sure you have enough   homeowners insurance to repair or even replace your home. Don’t forget coverage for your car or boat. Remember, standard homeowners insurance  doesn’t cover flooding. Whether you’re a homeowner or renter, you’ll need a separate policy for flooding. It’s available through your company, agent or use the agent locator at www.floodsmart.gov. Act now as flood insurance requires a 30-day waiting period. If you are traveling during hurricane season, it is also important to have travel insurance.

Protect Your Investment

Traveling during hurricane season increases the likelihood that you'll need some sort of assistance before, during, or even after your trip.  We highly recommend travel insurance regardless of when you travel, but especially during hurricane season.

When you think about travel insurance, you may think - I'm not planning on cancelling my trip, so why would I need travel insurance.  Expect the Unexpected.  You might think that sounds a bit ominous.  Well, not really.   If you have a plan in mind for unexpected situations, you can easily adapt to whatever comes your way.  We'll talk more about how to prepare a bit later in our series.

Should you arrive at the airport and find that your flight has been delayed due to inclement weather, wouldn't it be comforting to have a pleasant voice on the other end of a telephone working on your behalf to salvage your hard-earned vacation plans?

What if someone in your party gets injured by something blowing around in the storm?   What if someone back home gets sick and needs your help?  The list of possible reasons for needing assistance are endless.   Did you know that it could cost upwards of $25,000 to be extracted from a ship in the event of a medical emergency?  Did you also know that Medicare and most health insurance companies do not cover you in a foreign land - and perhaps more importantly may not be in a position to recommend somewhere for you to get assistance in your time of need?
