Christians across the globe are observing Holy Saturday today.    We take you  inside a famous cathedral that we visited on past trips.  Several amazing stained-glass windows are just one of the highlights of this church.  Can you guess where I am?

Today on Holy Tuesday, we continue our tour of famous cathedrals and churches we've visited during our travels.  This cathedral has several gorgeous stained glass windows.  Can you just imagine being inside when the sun shines thru the windows?   Can you guess where I am?

Starting Point for the True North

Bodø

Bodø is home to the world’s strongest maelstrom Saltstraumen and the Børvasstindan mountain range. Surrounded by sea and fjord, the light in Bodø constantly shifts with the wind and weather. And then there’s the exotic fact that both the midnight sun and northern lights can be seen from here.

The city’s main charm lies in its backdrop of distant rugged peaks and vast skies. The Børvasstindan mountain range offers both hiking and climbing opportunities, and the Bodømarka forrest is great for skiing in the wintertime and long walks in the summer season. Bodø also has the densest population of white-tailed sea eagles in the world, which is why the city is often referred to as the Sea eagle capital.

Bodø Peace Cathedral 

Bodø Cathedral is a cathedral in the municipality of Bodø in Nordland county, Norway. It is located in the town of Bodø. The church is part of the Bodø parish in the Bodø deanery in the Diocese of Sør-Hålogaland.

Hurtigruten provided a shuttle bus to the town center. We arrived at the cathedral after a short walk through the snow-covered streets.   The white snow, blue sky, and puffy clouds made a gorgeous setting for exterior pictures of the cathedral. The church has a 36-metre (118 ft) tall independent clock tower that contains three bells. There is also a memorial to those who died from Bodø during the World War II.

Going inside, the colorful stained-glass windows were quite stunning.  We were glad that we'd decided to go exploring on our own.  Originally, we had planned to book an excursion, but decided this was one port where it wouldn't be necessary.

Late Afternoon Tour of Mainz

Home of the Printed Word

After all passengers returned from the morning excursion to Heidelberg, the Artistry II set sail for Mainz, Germany.  The schedule allowed for up to 2.5 hours of individual touring of the city.

Possibilities included a stroll thru the old town center, a visit to the Gutenberg Museum, shopping, or our choice of visiting the Church of St. Stephen with its stained-glass windows by Marc Chagall.

On Our Own

Johannes Gutenberg was born in early 1400s in Mainz, Germany. He would borrow money to setup a print shop and produce a 42-line Latin Bible. The process of using movable type in a cheap and efficient manner would change the world. The Gutenberg Museum, in the heart of the old town center, has an original copy of the famous bible. The museum was only open until 5 PM so we had to skip visiting it in order to get to the church before it closed for the evening.

Marc Chagall Windows

The highlight of our visit to Mainz, was our visit to the Church of St. Stephen (Stephan) where we saw the gorgeous stained-glass windows of Marc Chagall. 

The Chagall choir windows in St. Stephan are unique in Germany. Between 1978 and his death in 1985, Russian Jewish artist Marc Chagall created nine stained-glass windows of scriptural figures in luminous blue. The figures depict scenes from the Old Testament. 

 Cathedral (Dom)

Mainz Cathedral or St. Martin's Cathedral is located near the historical center and market square of the city.  Since it was only about a 20 minute walk back to our ship, we had decided to make that our final stop on our self-guided walking tour.

This 1000-year-old Roman Catholic cathedral is predominantly Romanesque in style, but later exterior additions over many centuries have resulted in the appearance of various architectural influences seen today.

Mainz is a very easy city to explore on foot.  If you only have a limited amount of time for exploration, like we did, we'd suggest picking one or more of the attractions mentioned here.
