Where is Chris - Stained Glass Windows

Today on Holy Tuesday, we continue our tour of famous cathedrals and churches we've visited during our travels.  This cathedral has several gorgeous stained glass windows.  Can you just imagine being inside when the sun shines thru the windows?   Can you guess where I am?

Children can help you search on the web to see if you can solve today's challenge.  They might also design their own stained glass windows.  #KeepTheKidsEngaged

St. Martin Chuch Cochem

 

St. Martin Roman Catholic Church

The ancient and romantic town of Cochem is situated in the most beautiful part of the Moselle Valley. While strolling through the town, prior to heading up to Reichsburg Castle, we noticed St. Martin Church in the heart of the market area. From the exterior, one could tell that there were some amazing stained glass windows decorating the church.

While I returned to the ship, my husband walked back to the church and captured some images of the interior.  We hope that you enjoy these images.  We'd highly recommend including the interior of the church to your visit of Cochem.

This church is one of the three Roman Catholic churches built inside the city.

The church is situated by the market. The church has a turbulent history. The current old choir stand was first mentioned in 1593. Between 1932-1933 a new nave was built, but it was destroyed by bombing in 1945. In 1950/1951 the nave was rebuilt again.

The interior of the church is quite plain, with the exception of these magnificent statues and stained glass windows.

Strasbourg Complimentary Visit

We sailed from Breisach, Germany over night, arriving in Strasbourg around 3 AM.  When we awoke, we were greeted by a beautiful sunrise.

Situated on the border of France and Germany, this city blends the cultures of both countries in a delightful way. As capital of the Alsace region and seat of the Council of Europe and European Parliament, it is, without a doubt, an important city that manages to retain its historic charm.

Due to the early tour, which departed at 8 AM, buffet breakfast was a little earlier.

 Canal Boat Tour

Unlike the day before where we had to be transported by motor coach to the starting point of our tour, we didn't have far to go this day.

The canal boat pulled up a short distance from our ship and we all walked there to board it.   The canal boat tour was followed by a guided walking tour and some free time.


Walking Tour

We visited the monumental red-sandstone Strasbourg Cathedral de Notre-Dame with its ancient murals, stained-glass windows, and fascinating astronomical clock.   It is known as one of the most beautiful gothic cathedrals in Europe.

Another highlight of the tour was the magical LA PETITE FRANCE district, home to half-timbered houses, quaint shops, inviting bistros, and a waterfront promenade.

At the conclusion of the tour, we were transported back to our ship by motor coach.  We returned just in time for lunch.

When we returned, we found the captain and one of the crew members in a small boat working on the ship's hull.   They were always keeping things "ship shape" for us.

Inside the vessel, we'd sanitize our hands and were handed a wet towel, to refresh from the tour, along with a glass of fruit drink.  These were always waiting for us upon arrival.

After lunch we'd depart for our optional tour to the Maginot Line (which we will cover in another post).

Stained Glass Off the Beaten Path

Inspired by #FriFotos

This week we had the distinct privilege of co-hosting the Twitter travel event #FriFotos.    #FriFotos is a weekly photo forum by @EpsteinTravels @TravelDesigned @CharlesYap. Theme is revealed every Tuesday 12pm ET.

As usual, we went through our photo archives preparing the the big day, where we get to share some of our images taken during our travels.   A subset of those images contained images of #stainedglass windows from places across the globe.  (Click on any of these images for a closer look).

We've already posted articles with a sampling of images captured during our visit to Yusupov's Palace in St. Petersburg, Russia and also Canterbury Cathedral in England.  You'll admit that those are well known destinations.   In this article, we go off the beaten path.

Inside Canal House

One of the less known attractions in Amsterdam is Museum Willet-Holthuysen a canal house at Herengracht 605 which has been turned into a museum.

The museum houses the extraordinary art and craft collection collected by Abraham Willet (1825-1888).  The exhibitions include ceramics, glassware, silver, furniture, expensive trinkets, paintings, prints, drawings and photographs.

Looking Outside

The garden, which can be seen through the stained glass windows, was laid out as an early 18th-century city garden in the French style.  According to their website, they are not certain how the garden looked when the family was in residence.

All Things Glass Across the Globe

We have several more images of the stained glass, including some more close-up images.  Thanks to the inspiration from #FriFotos, we have just started a Pinterest page, where we'll add more images like these from all across the globe.   As the name implies, it won't be limited to images of stained glass windows.   Anything made from glass, including glassware, chandeliers, and blown glass, will be pinned for your enjoyment.  We welcome your feedback as well.

Canterbury Cathedral

In conjunction with co-hosting this week's edition of #FriFotos on Twitter, we've been on the hunt for images of #stainedglass to share. 

Our next stop is Canterbury Cathedral in England. It is the Mother Church of the worldwide Anglican Communion and seat of the Archbishop of Canterbury. The Cathedral is both a holy place and part of a World Heritage Site.

Yusupov's Palace

Our first stop is Yusupov's Palace in St. Petersburg, Russia.  The palace was once the residence of the wealthy and respected Yusupov family and which saw one of the most dramatic episodes in Russia's history - the murder of Grigory Rasputin.
