Hurricane Supplies

If a hurricane strikes, you’re going to need supplies not just to get through the storm but for the potentially lengthy recovery period that could follow. Have enough non-perishable food, water and medicine to last each person in your family a minimum of one week. Electricity and water could be out for at least that long. You’ll need extra cash, a battery-powered radio and flashlights. You’ll also need a portable, crank or solar powered USB charger to charge your cell phone.

You’re going to need supplies not just to get through the storm but for the potentially lengthy and unpleasant aftermath. Have enough non-perishable food, water and medicine to last each person in your family a minimum of three days. Electricity and water could be out for at least that long. You’ll need extra cash, a battery-powered radio and flashlights. You may need a portable crank or solar-powered USB charger for your cell phones. The CDC recommends if you need to go to a public shelter, bring at least two face masks for each person and, if possible, hand sanitizer. (Children under two years old and people having trouble breathing should not wear face coverings).

Hurricane Preparedness - Just for Kids

Hurricane Prep

Updated:  June 2024

During National Hurricane Preparedness Week, we rededicate ourselves to preventing loss of life and damage to property by raising awareness about hurricane hazards and taking action to protect our families, our homes, and our neighborhoods. It is important for children to be part of the preparedness process. This year we've assembled some resources to help parents and educators work with children to prepare for danger.

National Hurricane Center: Live Broadcast for Students

Free webinars are offered each May for students by the Hurricane Hunters. This webinar is part of the Hurricane Preparedness Week and the NOAA Hurricane Awareness Tour.

During this free 45-minute webinar, students heard from NHC scientists as well as NOAA AOC personnel who fly into hurricanes. The webinar covered hurricane hazards, forecasting, observing hurricanes with airplanes, and hurricane preparedness. Classroom questions were collected in advance of the webinar and questions were also answered live during the webinar.

The webinar was presented by the NOAA National Hurricane Center and the NOAA Aircraft Operations Center. The purpose of the Hurricane Webinars is to raise awareness about hurricanes in advance of the North Atlantic hurricane season.

Have you every asked yourself: What is a Hurricane? or How do Hurricanes form? If so, our Hurricanes for Kids video will help! This video is a fun and engaging way to introduce hurricanes to children. In this video kids will learn how hurricanes form, how they get their names, more about the different levels of hurricanes, major recent hurricanes and take away some fun interesting facts everyone should know.
