More Royal Deployments

Jewel OTS
Jewel of the Seas Departures

We attended the 51st weekly update from Royal Caribbean today and there were more deployment announcements in addition to an update from CLIA regarding ongoing efforts to work with CDC to resume sailing (more on that in a separate post).

As of today, Royal Caribbean's  Summer / Fall 2021 Jewel of the Seas deployment from Cyprus, Greece is available for booking.   They have worked closely with the Greek government and health authorities to establish the necessary health and safety protocols to begin sailings.  As with other cruises which have already been announced, the initial sailings will operate at a reduced capacity.

Los Angeles Sailings

Probably the biggest news among recent deployment announcements was the return to the West Coast this Winter with sailings from Los Angeles on Navigator of the Seas.   These will be open for booking as early as next week, after some final arrangements have been made.  See the statements from Royal Caribbean below for more details about the impact of this reposition of Navigator of the Seas.

Least Likely Location for Stained Glass

Can You Guess Location
for Our Next
Stained Glass Collection

You can probably guess that the following stained glass works of art are inside a casino.  But can you guess where?

What is the least likely location in your mind?
Do you give up?   Go ahead take a guess (don't cheat).

#FriFotos #greatINDOORS - Inspiration for Series

We started this series of articles in preparation for our guest co-host appearance last Friday on #FriFotos #greatINDOORS.    If you aren't familiar with it is a weekly photo forum by . Theme is revealed every Tuesday 12pm ET.

Every week in preparation for our participation, we search through our archives for a few images that meet that week's criteria.   Some themes are hard, while others, like last week's #greatINDOORS provide a wealth of possibilities.

Royal Caribbean Jewel Of the Seas

This stained glass piece is actually built into the staircase that takes you from one level to another inside Casino Royale aboard Royal Caribbean's Jewel of the Seas.   There are several more stained glass windows throughout the casino.

We've posted several more examples on our Pinterest page, All Things Glass Around the Globe.

As the name implies, it won't be limited to images of stained glass windows.   Anything made from glass, including glassware, chandeliers, and blown glass, will be pinned for your enjoyment.  We welcome your feedback as well.

Color Your World With Orange

Once Upon A Time We Saw Everything in Black & White
Now We Can See The World in Living Color

Today's #FriFotos Theme:
#Orange
is a weekly photo forum by @EpsteinTravels @TravelDesigned @CharlesYap. Theme is revealed every Tues 12pm ET. Participants from all over the globe share their personal images with the audience. Here are some that we shared this week, we hope you enjoy this mini journey across the globe.

Plenty of Orange on Cruise Ships

The image above was taken last week on Carnival Breeze at the Water Works slide.  I'm not sure if it was the orange color that drew me to the challenge, but I just had to try out this water slide.   It was great!

Another water slide entry is this one from Norwegian Cruise Line's Epic ship.  After sliding thru the enclosed tube, you find yourself dumped into the orange and yellow bowl.  Once again, this was a lot of fun.   BTW, did I mention that I can't swim?

Cruise lines invest a lot of money in interesting art which you can explore during your cruise. This eagle, which has its fair share of orange, was sited on Celebrity Cruise's Mercury. In this other image, taken on Royal Caribbean's Jewel of the Seas, someone brought their imagination to life on the ship.

Not pictured here, but can be seen on our Twitter profile, are images of life boats, life preservers, and more art which you can find on a cruise vacation.

Nature Paints with Orange

Not all the color in the world is man-made.  There is nothing more beautiful than a gorgeous sunset at sea.  As the sun sinks slowly into the water, the sky comes alive with shades of red, orange, and yellow.

Images like these can be yours when you explore the world by cruise ship.   We suggest giving yourself a photo assignment to seek out more images where the world has been painted with orange.

Royal Caribbean 2012 Harwich England

Harwich, England

An international port located on the estuary of the rivers Stour and Orwell in northeast Essex, Harwich is one of England's busiest coastal towns. It's also just 69 miles from London. Throughout history, the town has been a crucial port, providing a sheltered anchorage for many ships. The old town of Harwich is a conservation area, where you'll discover many historic buildings. The neighboring town of Dovercourt is a bit more modern, but equally quaint and fascinating to explore.

Jewel of the Seas to Continue Rockland Calls

Rockland, Maine
Royal Caribbean
Settle Dispute

The small 8,000 inhabitant coastal town of Rockland, Maine and cruise industry giant Royal Caribbean International had been at odds on a "head tax" increase that the town's City Council had put into effect.

Last week, the City Council reversed a decision to raise the per-passenger fees for cruise ships 600%, from $1 to $6.  We brought you the original story as part of our article, Cruise Passengers There's a Price on Your Head.

Royal Caribbean objected to the increase because it had planned the port visit well, in advance and had budgeted based on the $1 per passenger fee.   The City Council was trying to limit cruise ship calls because they had feared negative impact of thousands of people descending on the town.  They now admit that their decisions were based on misinformation in the media about the cruise industry's environmental record and crime.

Shari Closter, the interim executive director of the Penobscot Bay Regional Chamber of Commerce, which has its office in Rockland, said "there was a large amount of what she called misinformation about the cruise industry out there. Perhaps more damaging, in some cases there was no information at all".

Closter has been providing the town's City Council with cruise industry information and also informed the business community about the situation.  They had not been aware of the council's decisions.   A task force has been formed to study the situation since the town is interested in increased revenue from tourism.   There has to be a balance between increased revenue and the costs associated with those additional tourists.

We will continue to monitor this story as well as similar ones.  As the cruise industry continues to expand into new ports of call, many towns like Rockland, will be faced with similar decisions.

So, for now, the Jewel of the Seas, and the 2,504 passengers she carries, will be stopping in the quaint coastal town of Rockland, Maine.   You might want to plan a visit to this part of New England for the upcoming fall sailing season.
