More Royal Deployments

Jewel OTS
Jewel of the Seas Departures

We attended the 51st weekly update from Royal Caribbean today and there were more deployment announcements in addition to an update from CLIA regarding ongoing efforts to work with CDC to resume sailing (more on that in a separate post).

As of today, Royal Caribbean's  Summer / Fall 2021 Jewel of the Seas deployment from Cyprus, Greece is available for booking.   They have worked closely with the Greek government and health authorities to establish the necessary health and safety protocols to begin sailings.  As with other cruises which have already been announced, the initial sailings will operate at a reduced capacity.

Los Angeles Sailings

Probably the biggest news among recent deployment announcements was the return to the West Coast this Winter with sailings from Los Angeles on Navigator of the Seas.   These will be open for booking as early as next week, after some final arrangements have been made.  See the statements from Royal Caribbean below for more details about the impact of this reposition of Navigator of the Seas.

Be Among the First to Sail
Anthem of the Seas

Those of you that follow our blog on a regular basis know that we rarely write posts about cruise offers. That's not to say that we don't know about them, but we primarily want to share information about destinations and some of our adventures, rather than focus on one particular offer.

We are making an exception to the norm here because rarely does Royal Caribbean offer discounts on their brand new ships. This is a fabulous opportunity to be among the first to experience the sister ship which has been so well received by guests and the industry watchers.

  • From now through May 31, 2015, get a balcony for the price of an ocean view stateroom, plus 50% reduced deposit
  • Offer valid on new Caribbean and Bahamas itineraries on Anthem of the Seas sailings departing between Nov. 10, 2015 – Apr. 18, 2016.

Disney to Sprinkle Pixie Dust on Magic

You've Probably Heard the News...
Disney Magic will be
Re-Imagined This Year

We thought we'd take a different approach to the latest news coming out of Disney Cruise Line by looking at Disney Magic then (1998) and now (2013).

First, the News...

Disney Cruise Line has announced that they will sprinkle some pixie dust on the 15 year old Disney Magic vessel which will transform the ship into something closer to the more recent additions to the line, Disney Dream and Disney Fantasy.

The ship will be taken out of service from September 7 to October 10 for its biggest-ever refurbishment. The operation, being done in Cadiz, Spain, will cover restaurants, bars, the spa, the atrium, cabins and kids' spaces, and will include the addition of an AquaDunk water attraction that can be seen in the photo above. It will be similar, but quite different to the AquaDuck on the Dream-class ships.

It's 1998...

When the Disney executives decided to enter the Cruise market in the 90's, they set about bringing the on-land Disney family experience to sea. Obviously, there were some standard features that are needed on a cruise ship that they started with, but they made some changes geared towards family entertainment and the Disney culture.

Most notably missing was the casino, which could be found on most other ships of the same size, currently sailing the seven seas. Disney wanted to have entertainment for the entire family to enjoy throughout the day and into the evening. Therefore, they added an entire deck's worth of space devoted to kids and family activities, and two technologically advanced theaters which featured evening entertainment appropriate for all ages.

Cabins were another area that needed attention for families traveling together. The standard outside cabin (with or without balcony) was clearly designed with families in mind. Beds convert from twins to queen and are placed in the middle section near a curtain that divides the bedroom area from the sitting area, which is particularly useful at night, after the kids are asleep. In the sitting area, there's a sleeper sofa, coffee table, desk and color television. Balcony cabins are plentiful at 44 percent of outside staterooms.

After the Pixie Dust Settles...

Guest this Fall will be amongst the first to see the changes that occur during the month-long dry-dock including the following:
  • AquaDunk on the Disney Magic is a thrilling three-story body slide that begins with a surprise launch, sending guests on a near-vertical drop and through a translucent tube that extends 20 feet over the side of the ship.
  • The grand atrium lobby on the Disney Magic, inspired by elegant art deco and elements of the sea, features a palette of vibrant coral, blue and aquamarine, a dazzling new chandelier and a grand staircase.
  • The vibrancy of Rio de Janeiro creates an energetic atmosphere in Carioca's, a new restaurant on the Disney Magic. During the day, buffet meals feature a festival theme before night falls and the atmosphere transforms into an after-hours scene of Rio de Janiero, with city-side windows softly illuminated and lanterns flickering overhead.
  • Disney Cruise Line's popular adult-exclusive Palo restaurant receives a makeover on the Disney Magic, with stylish wood fixtures, glass artwork panels, decorative lighting and hand-tufted carpet.
  • Animator's Palate on the Disney Magic, one of the most popular restaurants on the Disney ships, is updated with all-new, animation-adorned walls and larger high-definition flat-screens to provide the best views of the animation magic that takes place all around.
  • Cabanas on the Disney Magic, drawing inspiration from Australian influences with uniquely Disney touches, includes a beach-themed dining room that has beach umbrellas and teak Adirondack chairs to create a sunny "down under" décor for guests.
  • Fathoms on the Disney Magic is a night club inspired by the excitement of the sea that utilizes special effects, lighting and sound to create different atmospheres from early evening to night.
  • The youngest (and smallest) cruisers --- ages three months to three years --- can enjoy the new It's a Small World Nursery on the Disney Magic.
  • Mickey Mouse Club is a new youth area in Disney's Oceaneer Club on the Disney Magic where kids can create crafts and play games on custom, ear-shaped tables, in a room splashed with Mickey's signature colors of red, yellow and black.
  • Keys on the Disney Magic is a piano bar and lounge perfect for guests wanting a low-key nighttime experience.

These are but a few of the many changes onboard the re-imagined Disney Magic, which will emerge following the completion of its dry-dock in October.

Royal Caribbean Has a New Star

Kristin Chenoweth, Godmother Quantum of the Seas

Kristin Chenoweth, is adding yet another accolade to her impressive resume: godmother to Royal Caribbean International's much anticipated new cruise ship, Quantum of the Seas.  The cruise line announced the appointment, which is steeped in maritime tradition, in an unconventional way during a red carpet-inspired commercial that aired during ABC television network's broadcast of the Oscars.

Chenoweth was chosen for her effervescent personality and ability to wow audiences. Her versatile range of roles made her a natural fit, given that Quantum of the Seas, set to debut in fall 2014, is poised to introduce unprecedented experiences and amenities only attainable on Royal Caribbean International.

Maritime Tradition

Historically an honor reserved for heads of state, politicians and celebrities, godmothers not only break a bottle to christen a ship, but also serve as guiding spirits to its guests and crew. Royal Caribbean looks to capture the essence of the role by choosing women whose life lessons and achievements illustrate the kind of courage, dedication and determination that are an inspiration to all.

"Kristin's effortless grace and dynamic performances align perfectly with our newest class of ships and we could not be more honored to have her represent Quantum of the Seas," said Richard D. Fain, chairman and CEO, Royal Caribbean Cruises, Ltd.  "Working with such a remarkable and versatile woman for one of maritime's longest standing traditions is an exciting experience."

"I am so excited to be named godmother of Royal Caribbean International's newest ship, Quantum of the Seas. I have been lucky to play many roles and I am looking forward to this one," stated Kristin Chenoweth. "I think the Royal Caribbean brand is the perfect match for me, especially with their history of providing exceptional entertainment experiences to their guests."
The Quantum class of ships, Quantum of the Seas and Anthem of the Seas, will build upon Royal Caribbean's legacy of revolutionary ship design and bold innovation. At 158,000 gross registered tons (GRT) and with a capacity of 4,100 guests based on double occupancy, the ships will debut in fall 2014 and spring 2015, respectively.

Our ships have always been designed for WOW and with Quantum of Seas, we are excited to introduce Quantum cruising and the 'at sea' firsts that our guests have come to expect from Royal Caribbean," said Adam Goldstein, President and CEO, Royal Caribbean International. "We look forward to working with Kristen and having her officially name our ship when she is delivered in the fall of 2014."

More information will be announced in the coming months.  Be sure to subscribe to our blog and Facebook fan page to learn all about this new WOW.
