Time to Explore Alaska by Land and Sea

Experience first-hand the majesty of Alaska and meet the people. Alaska comprises 591,004 square miles of some of the most diverse and spectacular landscapes in the world. It is a vast territory, almost a fifth the size of mainland USA, or to put it in a worldly perspective, it is as large as the combined areas of England, France, Spain, and Italy.

Nature has painted this landscape with broad strokes, majestic mountains, awe inspiring fjords, massive glaciers, dense forests, and open tundra. Here you will find 17 of the 20 highest peaks in North America, with Denali (Mt. McKinley) towering to 20,306 feet. Over 100,000 glaciers cover 28,000 miles of territory.

Alaska is home to the largest population of brown and black bears in the United States. It is also home to moose, caribou, musk ox, Dall sheep, black tail deer, wolves, and fox as well as a variety of small mammals. Over 90% of all bald eagles in the United States call Alaska their home.

Welcome to Alaska - the last frontier

Alaska Cruise Season
May - September

There are four types of Alaska Cruise Vacations:

Alaska - Roundtrip: These are cruises that begin and end in the same port city. They are very popular because they are often 7 days long and leave from either Seattle or Vancouver which both offer a number of affordable flight schedules for the cruise passenger.

Alaska - Northbound: These are one-way Glacier Intensive cruises. They begin in Seattle or Vancouver and cruise North to Anchorage/Seward.

Alaska - Southbound: These are also one-way Glacier Intensive cruises. They begin in Anchorage/Seward and cruise South to Vancouver or Seattle.

Alaska - Cruise and Land: This is the most popular way to see Alaska. These cruise/tours give you the opportunity to combine an Alaska Cruise with a scenic land tour that takes you into the Interior of Alaska. These are the packages that often include the domed cars of the Alaska Railroad to Denali National Park and Mt. McKinley. Click for Featured Alaska Cruises

Vancouver
Vancouver Photo Album

Alaska cruises often begin / end in Vancouver, BC, Canada. The largest metropolitan center in western Canada and the country's third largest city, Vancouver is the Canadian jewel of Puget Sound.  It was the host city for the 2010 Winter Olympic games.

Allow some time before or after your cruise to see the bustling center of Vancouver, Chinatown, Gastown, Stanley Park, and experience the treetop adventure at the Capilano Suspension Bridge.

 Seattle

Many Alaskan cruises begin and / or end in Seattle, Washington. Visitors to the Emerald City find a fusion of American, Asian and Native American cultures, set against a backdrop of Puget Sound and the Olympic Mountains.

Sample the freshest seafood to be found along the Pacific Rim, as well as a cup of Seattle's famous coffee. Also tour Seattle's famous Underground, including the world famous Pike Place Market, and ascend to the top of the Space Needle to view the entire city.

Ketchikan
Ketchikan Album

Near the southernmost tip of Alaska's panhandle sits a sleepy little town with a very dramatic title. Squeezed between mountain and sea, it is hard to imagine how the town got the Tlingit Indian name which means "Thundering Wings of an Eagle".

Ketchikan is the salmon capital of the world and home to the world's largest collections of totem poles. This small town's main street skirts a waterfront built on pilings over the seas. A few blocks from the downtown area you will find Creek Street, a former red-light district popular during the mining days.

Hubbard Glacier
Cruising Hubbard Glacier

Stretching over 90 miles from the core of the 12 million acre Wrangell-St. Elias National Park to the head of the Yakutat Bay, the mighty Hubbard is one of Alaska's largest and most unpredictable glaciers.

This is one of the highlights of your cruise as the ship enters Disenchantment Bay and carefully navigates through icebergs to get as close to the glacier as possible.

Those who purchased balcony cabins will be glad that they did during this part of the cruise.

Millions of tons of ice, gravel, and broken rock slide down the mountain carving a path to the sea.

Juneau

Nestled deep within the norther reaches of the Inside Passage is Alaska's first truly American city. Founded 13 years after the purchase of Alaska, it was Juneau, and more importantly its gold, that captured the imagination of the American public.

Here we highly recommend Orca Enterprises Whale Watching boat tour. Captain Larry guarantees you will see whales, eagles, and other sea mammals during this tour.

Sitka
Sitka Photo Album

Almost every city or town in the United States can trace its formation back to an European immigration or conquest. English, Spanish, French, and German are common heritages, but few can claim Russian roots. However, Sitka is one of those rare exceptions, with Russians first arriving in 1741.

This town can easily be explored on foot. It will be your last chance for Alaskan souvenirs and your only chance for Russian souvenirs during the cruise.

Victoria
Butchart Gardens Album

Situated on the sunny southern tip of Vancouver Island, Victoria basks in one of Canada's mildest climates. This intimate, sophisticated seaside city with its English charm, gentle weather, and dramatic scenery draws close to two million visitors every year - earning it the title of the most visited vacation spot in Western Canada.

Victoria is known as the "City of Gardens". A short drive north of the city will bring you to the 130 acre Butchart Gardens where you can walk among some of the most gorgeous flower gardens in the world.

Think COLD this Friday

#FriFotos Theme = COLD

It's the middle of winter in North America, so it shouldn't be hard to come up with images depicting "COLD" for the weekly Twitter photo forum #FriFotos.

With all the cold temperatures sweeping the country and heavy snowfall, you may have had your fill of "cold" images.   Nevertheless, we have gone through our archives and have some inspiration for you. This image was made on a day earlier this year (brrrrrr).

(For those that don't know:  #FriFotos is a weekly photo forum by . Theme is revealed every Tuesday 12pm ET.)    Recently, @spencerspellman joined the team as a permanent co-host.  We even had the chance to co-host one week last year.)

Hubbard Glacier

One of our favorite sites during our Alaska cruises was the time spent cruising Hubbard Glacier.  If you've never been to Alaska we'll try to explain the experience.  The ship slowly enters the bay and immediately you start to see chunks of floating ice passing you by.  In the distance you hear the calving of the glacier (if you are fortunate) and see the blue glacial ice.  It is quite the site to see, especially if there is another ship in the bay along with you.

The best vantage point is from your balcony or one of the open decks if you haven't booked a balcony cabin.   We highly recommend a balcony for an Alaska cruise.   You can go inside your cabin and warm up between photos if you want to.

It doesn't matter what side of the ship you are on because the captain will make a 360 degree journey so that everyone has the opportunity to see the glaciers.  Here are a few of our favorite images.  We'll post a few more for the forum as well.

Nature's Crazy Shapes Alaska

Nature Under the Microscope
Destination Alaska

#travelpics theme:
“crazy nature

Each Monday afternoon, the Twitter photo travel chat, #travelpics, explores the world focusing on a particular theme.  Participants answer questions and share their personal photos with the audience.

Shapes of Hubbard Glacier

Beautiful and crazy shapes can be found in nature by looking carefully.
Q2:Share your favorite!

The highlight of one of our Inside Passage (Alaska) cruises was when the ship slowly and carefully made its way thru the glacial ice of Hubbard Bay allowing the passengers to get a closeup view of the glacier.

Sailing closer, we past glacial ice that had broken off from the the main glacier in a process known as "calving".

Many Shapes, Sizes, Colors

There were no two pieces of ice that were the same.  They came in all shapes and sizes and the colors were amazing, especially the shades of blue.

Our ship even sent a tendor boat to retrieve a chunk of glacier ice and bring it back onboard our ship for the passengers to get a closer look.

We hung over the side of our balcony taking several pictures of the ice and the glacier.

 Photographing the Ice

If you are planning a cruise to Alaska, be sure to pack your digital camera with plenty of spare memory cards, as we guarantee everywhere you turn you'll see crazy and beautiful shapes of nature that you'll want to capture in images.

Ideally, you have a camera with a lens that has several different focal lengths, including a telephoto, so that you can get closeup shots.

Favorite Shots

In this photo, the clouds are obscuring part of Hubbard Glacier giving an eery mood to the image. That definitely made this one of our favorite shots.

We couldn't pick just one, so we've provided a few of our favorite shots here.

Do you have a favorite among them?

We hope that this has sparked your interest in taking your photography to a new level.  Follow the weekly #travelpics chat on Twitter for more ideas on this and other travel topics.   We'd love to hear your ideas as well, or better yet, join us for the next chat.

Celebrity Cruisetours to Hubbard Glacier in 2012

Alaska Cruisetours
Celebrity Millennium®

See Hubbard Glacier
& so much more

Most people thought of a cruise to Alaska as the ultimate vacation, to be completed sometime later in life, perhaps when the children are grown and on their own.   Now, that thinking has changed and many families go to Alaska as an educational experience while the children are living with you.

Whichever situation applies to you,  we are happy that you are exploring an Alaska cruise vacation.  Our blog and Facebook page has a wealth of information to get you started on your investigation.  We are Certified Alaska Experts and can help you plan a worry-free trip that will satisfy the requests of everyone in your group.

We encourage you to extend your cruise by adding one of the many Cruisetours which can be added before or after the cruise portion of your trip - or even both if you have the time.  Here is just a sampling of Cruisetours on Celebrity Millennium, one of our favorite ships.

Alaska Glacier Cruising and Harbor Seals

What does Disenchantment Bay, Hubbard Glacier, and Cruise Ships have to do with Harbor Seals?

We are approaching the start of the 2011 Alaska Cruise Season which begins in May and continues through September.  Peak cruising season coincides with the pupping and molting seasons for harbor seals in Alaska.
Harbor seals on ice. Photo: NOAA Fisheries

Protecting Harbor Seals

The National Marine Mammal Laboratory, which is part of NOAA's Alaska Fisheries Science Center, conducted a study of the impact of cruise ships sailing in Disenchantment Bay, which is where many harbor seals hang out on ice flows during this time of year. While there have not been any changes yet, additional restrictions may be imposed in the future to protect the seals.

RCI Radiance of the Seas
The study placed several possible regulations on the table that could force cruise ships to make some changes. Ships may be required to stay at least 500 meters (about 540 yards) from the seals and carry trained observers to aid in selecting routes that don't disturb seals. A total exclusion of cruise ships from Disenchantment Bay is also not out of the question. Some Alaskan waters, such as Johns Hopkins Inlet in Glacier Bay, have already been made off-limits to cruise ships during the summer months to protect seals.

As many as five ships a day sail in Disenchantment Bay for closeup views of Hubbard Glacier calving.  Many ships already follow self-imposed limits to protect the seals.   The impact of cruise ships on seals has been a concern throughout Alaska for some time. In 2009, ships entering Glacier Bay were urged by park officials to stay at least a quarter-mile away from harbor seals. "When disturbed, the seal pups can be separated from their mothers, with potentially fatal consequences," the alert stated. "Disturbances by passing vessels can also stress molting seals and impact their health."

This year there will be approximately 150 cruise ships from seven cruise lines sailing to Hubbard Glacier.  Hopefully the scientific community, Yakutat Tlingit Tribe members, representatives from the cruise industry, and other government agencies, can find ways to protect the harbor seals, while preserving one of the most impressive aspects of an Alaskan cruise - glacier cruising.

Where in the World Does Celebrity Cruise - Vol. 6

CELEBRITY ALASKA

Our next destination in our series on Where in the World does Celebrity Cruise in 2010/2011 is Alaska. Few destinations invoke vivid images simply by their mention. Alaska is one of those that does.

What do you think about when you hear "Alaska"? Perhaps you envision calving glaciers, snow-capped mountains, eagles soaring overhead, whales breaching feet away from you, a mother bear and her cub coming out of the woods, or a moose standing in your path. How about bright sunshine at 10 PM or clear blue skies that forms the canvas for multi-colored wildflowers blooming in the nearby fields? You might be thinking about salmon running upstream or the fisherman on boats nearby.

These are but a few of the images of Alaska that you can view from the comfort of your railway car or cruise ship balcony on a Celebrity Cruisetour. The memories of the splendor of Alaska will stay with you for the rest of your life. Celebrity Cruises makes it possible for you to easily explore the Alaska of your dreams on a fully escorted Cruisetour. Combine that with the ship itinierary that interests you and you have the perfect formula for a worry free Alaskan adventure.
