Where is Chris - Road Trip

We hope that you enjoyed our "Where is Chris" series.  Although cruising is still on hold, kids are starting to head back to school in some parts of the country and people are trying to return to some sort of "normal". 

In this final post of the "Where is Chris" series, I won't make you guess.  You may have wondered what happened to the daily posts...

We've taken a break from posting while on a road trip with my son and grandson across country back to Colorado.  We did some sightseeing along the way, including stopping at Seven Falls.   Colorado Springs is beautiful country.  We'll share a few images here from our trip.

Have you been on any road trips this summer with your family?   We'd love to hear about them and if you have any stories or pictures to share, please send them to me and we'll use a few of our favorites in upcoming posts.

Next, we'll turn our attention back to completing some of our past Cruise Diaries.   In particular, we'll complete our abbreviated Australia cruise back in February this year.   There's also tropical weather to keep an eye on, despite the fact ships aren't cruising, people living near the coast or gulf need to always be vigilant this time of year as the storms start to intensify.

One Small Step for Man ...

Those of you who were alive in 1969 probably remember where you were when you heard those immortal words as man took its first step on the moon.   

I've always had a fascination for exploration and that's perhaps why I love cruising so much.  I can only imagine what it was like to be in a space craft heading for orbit and on to the moon.

Today, in honor of #MoonDay and #SpaceExplorationDay, we thought we take a break from our normal blog posts about cruises and resort vacations and talk about a day trip to a destination which is home to the U.S. Space Camp.

When visiting this destination we suggest leaving early enough in the morning so you can get to the space museum about the time it opens.   Even before you enter the building, you are greeted by rockets and other space craft on the grounds.

Imagine seeing this through the eyes of a youngster.   Their eyes were as large as a space saucer.

Inside and outside the museum there are plenty of exhibits to peak the imagination of young and old plus tell the history of the U.S. space program from its inception until today.

Where is Chris?

If you live in the midwest, south, or eastern part of the United States, this destination could be a road trip away.   You will want to allow a whole day for exploration.   #KeepTheKidsEngaged

U.S. Space & Rocket Center - Huntsville, Alabama

Today, in honor of #MoonDay and #SpaceExplorationDay, we thought we take a break from our normal blog posts about cruises and resort vacations and talk about a day trip to Huntsville, Alabama. Huntsville is home to the U.S. Space Camp located with U.S. Space & Rocket Center.

Thoughts on Independence Day 2012

Signers of the Declaration of Independence

The first, largest, and most famous signature is that of John Hancock, President of the Continental Congress.

The youngest signer was Edward Rutledge (age 26). Benjamin Franklin (age 70) was the oldest. Two future presidents signed: John Adams (second President) and Thomas Jefferson (third President).

Mount Rushmore National Memorial South Dakota

Not all of our trips are cruises.  There is plenty to see in this great country, especially if you are willing to spend some time in a car or other motor vehicle.

We headed out west towards Montana, and stopped overnight in South Dakota so that we'd be able to visit Mount Rushmore National Memorial in the morning. As you can see from the pictures below, we couldn't have asked for a better day - the blue skies offset the monument beautifully.

The day before, the people weren't as fortunate as the mountain was socked in by fog and rain for most of the day.   This was Memorial Day weekend, and there were some veterans on hand raising funds for their fellow comrades.

The Mount Rushmore National Memorial is a sculpture carved into the granite face of Mount Rushmore near Keystone, South Dakota, in the United States. Sculpted by Danish-American Gutzon Borglum and his son, Lincoln Borglum, Mount Rushmore features 60-foot (18 m) sculptures of the heads of former United States presidents (in order from left to right) George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt and Abraham Lincoln.

The entire memorial covers 1,278.45 acres (5.17 km2) and is 5,725 feet (1,745 m) above sea level.  The tallest mountain in the region is Harney Peak (7,242 feet or 2,207 metres).

The entrance to the National Memorial is lined by the 50 state flags.  The inscription on the base lists the state name along with the order and year that it became a state.


Take some time to explore this great country.   We'd be happy to help you plan a road trip or, if you don't want to drive yourself, there are tour companies that will do the driving for you.   What amazes us is that the early settlers didn't have GPS or maps, but yet they headed west to forge a new nation and we owe it to them to tour the country.  Bring history alive for your school-aged children.
