Where is Chris - What a View

As we remain locked inside our houses, practicing social distancing, let us remember what we are trying to protect.   God has made a marvelous world for us, and we want to be able to enjoy it through travel again.  We want this for ourselves, friends, families, and people we don't even know.   Through this blog we will share photos from our past explorations to give you something to look forward to when this pandemic is over.

Visit to Bronnoysund

Brønnøysund

A pretty little town rich in history and maritime atmosphere 


Brønnøysund is situated on a narrow peninsula on the mainland, surrounded by islands and water. Here, you're actually at the halfway point along the western coast of Norway. The small coastal town of 5,000 inhabitants is centered on the narrow but strategically situated harbor, that caters to all trade and fishing. It is a vibrant and pretty little town with an attractive visitors' marina.

We spent some time some strolling among the shops just across from where we docked - including a Coop food store. to stroll around the streets – perhaps a walk along Havnegata, where you can enjoy looking at the small boats and bustling life of the archipelago. Sample the street life and go into one of the pubs, or treat yourself to a delicious meal at one of the restaurants.

Shortly after leaving the town, we made a slight detour for ....

  Torghatten

On deck we saw the strange mountain Torghatten (rising 850 ft above sea level), famous for its
distinctive hole right through the middle. The hole is 525 ft long, 115 ft high, and 65 ft wide, and was created during the Ice Age.


Stay on deck to see the hole from the sea, as is natural for seafarers (who in the past were the only ones visiting the place).

Sun Kissed Oksfjord

Øksfjord 

Sailing north, Øksfjord is Hurtigruten's first port of call in the county of Finnmark. At above 70˚ we found ourselves in the true high north. To the southeast you can glimpse Norway’s fifth largest glacier, Øksfjordjøkulen (nearly 4,000 feet above sea level). This is the only glacier on mainland Norway to 'calve' directly into the sea, a uniquely arctic phenomenon. The district has a population of 500 and Øksfjord is the administrative center for the municipality of Loppa. Fish processing plants and a shipyards speak to an area dependent on the bounty of the sea.

The sun was starting to set as we sailed towards Øksfjord.  It cast its shadow on the snow-capped mountain peaks along our route.  Sailing closer to town, we could see colorful houses clinging to the dramatic mountain landscape in this small fishing community.

Journey Towards North Cape

Northernmost Part 

 Norway Voyage

On Day 6 we reached the northernmost part of our coastal voyage of  Norway.  At that point we were only about 2000 km from the North Pole.

Hanging out on Deck G in the Panorama Lounge, we enjoyed the magnificent landscape as we continued our journey toward the North Cape.  Snow covered mountains, bathed in bright sunlight, lined our path to Honningsvåg.

This voyage was the second time we cruised in this part of Norway.   The difference was that this time the area was under a blanket of snow, which really highlighted the colorful buildings. In our next post, we'll detail both visits to Honningsvåg.
