Introducing Fun Ship 2.0

Last October, Carnival Cruise Lines announced  $500 million dollars worth of enhancements spanning through 2015. The initiative, entitled "Fun Ship 2.0", builds on the success of Carnival Magic’s new branded experiences.

Carnival Liberty was the first ship to undergo the face-lift, adding about half of the 11 new features. As Carnival Breeze comes closer to completion, the remaining features will be coming to the forefront. The new features belong to the following four categories.

Dining

For added dining , TV personality and Celebrity Chef Guy Fieri has joined forces with Carnival to bring Guy’s Burger Joint. Guests will have the their choice of homemade burgers made with choice ground beef and complimented with hand-cut fries. This will be a lunch or dinner option for guests, topped off with their own condiment bar. Also added will be a new Cantina with Mexican delights like to order burritos and tacos. All complimentary.

Comedy

Comedian George Lopez has revamped the Punchliner Comedy club, adding some of his own talent and appearing on some of Carnival’s ships personally. The Punchliner Comedy Club Presented by George Lopez will have pre-recorded video and voice messages from Lopez. Carnival will launch Punchliner brunch as well offering entertainment in the main dining rooms on-board.

Bars

Carnival is giving bars at sea a new name. Carnival partnered with sports video game company EA SPORTS to bring an interactive sports bar at sea. Not only will there be tournaments and trivia but 16 46-inch big screen TV’s and a 24/7 live sports ticker. To expand on the ever-so-popular Red Frog Pub that was introduced on Carnival Magic, Carnival will be adding Red Frog Rum Pub and BlueIguana Tequila Bar. For the folks that are cruising to heal their sorrows, Carnival is adding an Alchemy Bar where passengers will create their own drinks on a prescription pad. The Library Bar will be added also, being coined “an intimate cocktail lounge.”

Entertainment

Carnival is taking entertainment to the next level with Playlist Productions, 30-minute shows with LEDs, special effects, and sing alongs. Teaming up with game leader Hasbro, Inc. to create interactive game shows at seas. Also Carnival is teaming up with DJ Irie and creating Spin’iversity for folks who want to learn to mix music.

Which Ship is Right for You

By the end of 2012, three ships in the fleet will host 10 of the 11 new features of Fun Ship 2.0 with three more having at least 4 of the features.  Even among those ships, there will be a variance in which features are deployed on each vessel.  We've put a chart together, based on information that has been released to date, showing the features on each ship.

We've also included the schedule so that you can plan your cruise vacation following the dry dock that will complete the transformation.

Bill Cosby Pinch Hits for Juneau Alaska

Norwegian Pearl To Extend Seattle Call for Propeller Repairs

Click for Juneau Photo Album
The Norwegian Pearl is sailing 7-Night Inside Passage Alaska cruises R/T Seattle, Washington, through the end of September. Next week's itinerary (July 24 departure) has an unexpected change due to some unplanned propeller repair work that needs to be performed when the ship docks in Seattle.

Normally the ship would depart Seattle at 4 PM on Sunday, July 24th, cruise the inside passage on Monday, and call in Juneau, Alaska starting at 2 PM on Tuesday.  Due to the repair work, the ship won't depart Seattle until Monday at noon.  It will cruise the inside passage on Tuesday, skipping it's planned call in Juneau, and continuing on to its next port of call, Skayway, Alaska on Wednesday.

Bill Cosby to Perform on Norwegian Pearl

Norwegian Pearl
Bill Cosby will perform two complimentary comedy shows aboard the Norwegian Pearl on July 24, during the ship's extended overnight stay in Seattle, Washington for propeller repair work.

Juneau, Alaska will be Skipped

CBS show Undercover Boss featuring Norwegian Cruise Line's CEO, Kevin Sheehan, just had a repeat performance.   One of the tasks as CEO of this contemporary cruise line is making tough calls.    Kevin had to make one this past week, but he tried to think of the passengers at the same time.

"We understand that missing Juneau will cause disappointment for some of our guests, so we wanted to do something very special to make the cruise memorable," said Kevin Sheehan, Norwegian’s CEO.

"Bill Cosby is a huge name in entertainment, and we felt that he would deliver an incredible show. We are very pleased to have Mr. Cosby performing on board Norwegian Pearl.”

Guests also will be compensated with a $150 onboard credit per stateroom, as well as a future cruise credit of 10% of the cruise fare paid per guest.  They will also receive complimentary house wine with dinner, 50% off on specialty restaurants' cover charges and the option to enjoy Seattle's nightlife.

As of press time, this is the only Alaska itinerary that has been impacted by the propeller repair work. It is best that this work be performed in Seattle as a planned event, than under emergency circumstances in the middle of the cruise.   We will monitor this story for any developments.

Technically, the cruise lines have the right to modify the cruise itinerary, with or without notice, and with or without compensation.  Norwegian Cruise Line made the right choice by trying to compensate for the unexpected change of itinerary.

See our Facebook page article, Exploring Alaska, to learn more about cruising to Alaska.

Whodunit creates a live mystery aboard the ship that everyone in the group will become a part of as well as try and solve! There are times when the guests are following the mystery and other times when they are free to enjoy the cruise. We don’t want them to have to look over their shoulders for the entire cruise! On a 7 night sailing the show takes place for the first four nights. On a three night sailing it will last the whole cruise. The show starts with a flyer that goes out to the guests to get you into the swing of things and let you know the theme of that sailing’s show. When you board you are given a role to play. Not to worry. If you are on the shy side you can sit back and watch it all unfold. If not, you will use your character to find out as much as you can because the actors are mixing among you! We do an event before dinner then at late seating every night.

BIG CLUE...everyone must dine at late seating! Nothing happens when you are at port so you won’t miss any important clues. There are notes slid under your cabin door…and mysterious phone calls made to your cabin. All kinds of wild and suspicious fun! Eventually a crime will occur, a detective will come on the scene and hopefully with help from the guests…solve the crime! We end with a hosted cocktail party where the fabulous supersleuth is announced and the prizes are given away! Whodunit’s wild shows are comedies! So, even if you do not want to solve the crime you can sit back and enjoy the show! But beware... guests have been known to... DIE OF LAUGHTER!

Oasis of the Seas - Entertainment

Royal Caribbean International is known for their fantastic production shows, and when Oasis of the Seas begins sailing in December 2009, that tradition will continue. The Tony award-winning Broadway-licensed musical, 'Hairspray,' is set to debut in the ship's grand Opal Theater.

According to Peter Compton, RCI's Vice President Entertainment, "The show is licensed to Royal Caribbean International for three years aboard Oasis of the Seas with an option for a fourth year. Under the agreement, which was struck with the aid of New York City-based Music Theater International and Broadway Theatrical, the show will be available exclusively to the cruise line, ensuring the 'feel good' performance will be the only of its kind at sea."

'Hairspray' had a seven year run on Broadway, which ended this past January, and is still dazzling audiences at London's West End. The show is set in the 1960s and tells the story of Tracy Turnblad, a big girl with big aspirations who wins a spot on a local TV dance program and finds herself transformed into a teen sensation.

Rehersals are underway onboard the Oasis as she sails across the Atlantic. In the following two videos, you can get a glipmse of the rehersals as well as learn more about the musical entertainment onboard.

The show will be offered three or four times on each seven-night cruise itinerary, ensuring that guests have the opportunity to see the show at their leisure during their vacation.

Other entertainment offerings include a yet to be announced aerial show, which will also appear in Opal Theater, jazz perfomances in Jazz on 4, a comedy show in Comedy Live, an ice show in Studio B, and two aqua shows 'Splish Splash,' a comedy dive show and 'Oasis of Dreams,' featuring aquatic acrobatics synchronized to a spectacle of music and lights which will performed in the AquaTheater.
