When in Trøndelag Choose Local

Hurtigruten’s cruise along the Norwegian coast not only offers a whole host of incredible experiences and wondrous scenery, but is also a culinary journey. The on-board menus offer authentic Norwegian cuisine, which reflect both the seasons and the local specialties and cuisine of the regions past which the ship is sailing.

        Dinner in Trondheim

During our cruise through Trondheim on the way back south, Hurtigruten's Norway Coastal Kitchen featured local cuisine from the Trøndelag area in Central Norway.  This was one of the most unique local meals during our voyage.

“Sodd” means to seethe and is traditional soup of the region. Genuine Sodd from Trøndelag consists of meatballs and dices made ​​of lamb (mutton),  beef, and broth. The meatballs are made with cornflour, whole milk, heavy cream, ginger and nutmeg. It must be served with Skjenning, a flat bread that has been brushed with sugar and fresh milk on one side.

Sailing from Trondheim

 Lunch Day 3

Shortly after returning from our Trondheim excursion to Nidaros Cathedral it was time for lunch in the Restaurant (main dining room on Deck C).  Lunches are served buffer style.  As you can see in the picture, there was a selection of hot and cold food to chose from.

Our choices included meat and potatoes, salad, and a sandwich.   Dessert consisted of home-made strudel topped with vanilla sauce and berries.

Monks Island

Shortly after departure we saw Munkholmen (Monks Island) on the starboard side. This was Trondheim's execution ground in ancient times and the Benedictine monks built a monastery on the island very early in the 11th century. In 1658 it was converted into a prison and fort, later becoming a custom house. Today this is a popular recreational area, with good bathing and restaurant.

Kjeungskjær Lighthouse

The Kjeungskjær lighthouse (Norwegian: Kjeungskjær fyr) is a lighthouse in the municipality of Ørland in Sør-Trøndelag county, Norway. The lighthouse is located on a tiny island at the mouth of the Bjugnfjorden about 3.5 kilometres (2.2 mi) west of the village of Uthaug and 5 kilometres (3.1 mi) south of the village of Nes in Bjugn. 

It was built in 1880 and automated in 1987. Prior to being automated, the operators lived on the lower floors of the building. The lighthouse is lit from July 21 until May 16 every year. It is not lit during the late spring and early summer due to the midnight sun. The red lighthouse is an octagonal-shaped building that is 20.6 metres (68 ft) tall.

We spent the afternoon sailing past snow-capped mountains and little colorful villages from the comfort of the Panorama Lounge on Deck G.

Trondheim and the Nidaros Cathedral

Trondheim

After breakfast we began our tour of Trondheim, Norway’s third largest city, which was founded by the Viking King Olav Tryggvason back in 997 A.D. Trondheim’s architecture and surroundings create a beautiful, almost mystical atmosphere for any outing.

The city was originally given the name by Olav Tryggvason. It was for a long time called Nidaros (English: Mouth of the river Nid), or Niðaróss in the Old Norse spelling. But it was also just called kaupangr ("city") in the district Trøndelag. In the Dano-Norwegian period, during the years as a provincial town in the united kingdoms of Denmark-Norway, the city name was spelled Trondhjem.

Utsikten (The View)

We heard about the city’s many features as the bus took us through Trondheim’s streets and boroughs, including a short stop at Utsikten (The View) to admire the city from above.  From here we departed to the main stop on our tour, Nidaros Cathedral.

Nidaros Cathedral

Nidaros Cathedral is a Church of Norway located in the city of Trondheim in Sør-Trøndelag county, Norway. The Nidaros Cathedral, as we know it today, began as a wooden chapel erected over the tomb of St. Olav, the Viking King who became the patron saint of Norway.

It was built from 1070 to 1300, and designated as the cathedral for the Diocese of Nidaros in 1152. After the Protestant Reformation, it was taken from the Roman Catholics by the Lutheran Church in 1537. It is the northernmost medieval cathedral in the world.

Coastal Kitchen Trondheim

Breakfast & Lunch Buffets

As we continue to look at 2016 in review, we are featuring our Hurtigruten Norway Coastal Voyage.  This was the main highlight of the year, seeing Northern Lights in the winter skies of Norway along with many charming villages.  Food was outstanding during our voyage so we'll also be sure to report on each day's meals as well.  Be sure to bookmark our diary page so that you can follow the entire trip.

We arrived in Trondheim at 6 AM but our excursion wasn't until 8:40 AM so we had plenty of time for a leisurely breakfast.  Today's feature included pancakes and eggs with bacon among other fresh selections.

The evening's menu was always on the table at breakfast time so that you could see what regional favorites would be featured.

For lunch, we included a small salad, sandwich, and of course one of the desert choices.  These pictures are just a sampling of the many options available each day.

Almost every meal included potatoes which we loved to top off with the gravy of the day.
