Hurricane Dorian Florida Port Closures

Known worldwide as the "Cruise Capital of the World" PortMiami is the global headquarters for five leading cruise lines. But this week, it will become a ghost town as preparations are underway for an unwelcome guest, Hurricane Irma, which is still packing a huge punch.

Cruise lines are scrambling to make alternative plans for the vessels which were supposed to dock at PortMiami over the weekend.   See our other post, Hurricane Dorian Impacting Cruise Schedules, for details on modified or cancelled cruise itineraries.

ALERT | HURRICANE DORIAN  (SEPT. 1, 2019)

ALL PORT USERS

  • PortMiami is closed to all vessel traffic until further notice. 
  • Tunnel will close at noon today.  
  • All other port access will be closed as of 1800 hrs today. 
  • Passengers please contact the cruise lines for up to date itinerary information.

Effective 8:00 a.m. 02 September 2019, Hurricane Condition ZULU will be set in the Port of Canaveral. No vessel, regardless of size or service, will be allowed to transit through the port, and all commercial vessels over 500 gross tons are prohibited from remaining in the port.

JAXPORT’s terminals will close to incoming vessels at 8 a.m. Monday morning

Once Port Hurricane Condition YANKEE goes into effect Monday morning, incoming vessels, including tugs and barges, are prohibited from entering the port. All outgoing vessels must exit the port prior to the setting of Port Hurricane Condition ZULU (12 hours prior to the arrival of sustained gale force winds). In addition, all ship-to-shore cargo operations must cease 6 hours prior to the setting of Port Hurricane Condition ZULU.

“The safety of the public and our stakeholders is our number one priority as we continue to closely monitor Dorian and prepare for any potential impacts,” said JAXPORT CEO Eric Green. “I encourage everyone to follow the direction of the U.S. Coast Guard and emergency management officials as we all work together to keep our port community safe.”

Port Everglades is closed until further notice by order of the U.S. Coast Guard.

Port Condition Zulu in Effect 

The United States Coast Guard set Port Condition Zulu for the Port of Palm Beach at 6 p.m. ET, September 1st, due to sustained gale force winds greater than 39 mph expected to arrive within twelve (12) hours.

Ports will remain closed to waterfront activities until the passage of the tropical storm force winds, and the COTP, in conjunction with the SWAT, has determined that it is safe to reopen ports based upon:

  • Ports and waterways damage surveys. 
  • Aids to navigation verification. 
  • Status and condition of drawbridges. 
  • Re-establishment of required port security measures in accordance with respective Facility Security Plans. 
  • The COTP will convene the Swat via conference call.

Sunday, 9/1, 11am est Condition: X-RAY

Port Tampa Bay remains open to vessel traffic as the USCG maintains condition X-RAY. 

From the Tampa Bay (Ruskin, FL) weather forecast office of the National Weather Service: With maximum sustained winds over 180mph, Hurricane Dorian is one of the strongest in modern history in the Bahamas. It remains at a CAT 4 moving slowly at 7mph WNW. The probabilities of significant impacts to the counties of west-central and southeast Florida remain low.

All services report that Dorian's track is predicted to turn north late Mon/early Tuesday and follow offshore along the eastern coast of Florida, but a deviance of on 20 miles delay in the turn could still significantly impact the severity of weather in Florida's western counties.



PORT CONDITION EXPLANATION:

WHISKEY - Gale force winds (34 knots or 39 mph) are predicted to arrive within 72 hours. Ports Status: Open to all commercial and recreational traffic.

 X-RAY - Gale force winds are predicted to arrive within 48 hours. Port Status: Open to all commercial and recreational traffic.

YANKEE - Gale force winds are predicted to arrive within 24 hours. Ports status: Closed to inbound traffic and vessel traffic control measures in effect on vessel movements within the port.

ZULU - Gale force winds are predicted to arrive within 12 hours. Ports Status: Closed to all inbound and outbound traffic.

PORT CONDITION RECOVERY - The storm is no longer a threat to the area, however some damage may have occurred and response and recovery operations are in progress. Ports status: Reopened to outbound traffic at completion of port survey. Vessel traffic control measures remain in effect on vessel movements within the port.
